We are having our fourth and happened into an E- tradition with our first three (all boys) and can’t find E- girls’ names that we like. Our boys also all happen to have 7-letter names, but we’re not tied to that. I’ve combed the NB lists and User Created Lists and found some to create a bit of our own list, but would love your thoughts to make sure I’m not missing a great one. We like traditional, no-nonsense names. Nothing flowery; preferably not ending in a. Can you help?
First two that came to mind
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]
Other ideas
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u]
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Ellen[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
The first name that comes to mind is [name_f]Eve[/name_f]. [name_f]Eve[/name_f] is a gorgeous, short, classic, and impactful name with no frills but lots of substance. I also thought of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], but that likely already crossed your mind. Is [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] too flowery? I think it could work well, and I don’t find it flowery, but my judgement probably isn’t the best in that regard. [name_f]Elle[/name_f] and [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] are definitely traditional, but are they your style? However, I think you have a good number of options.
[name_u]Eden[/name_u]: Short, historically rooted, and impactful. However, is it too modern for your taste?
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]: This might suit your style a bit better. It’s very classic and traditional, but definitely does not feel out of style. For something even rarer but with the same qualifications, there’s [name_f]Ethel[/name_f].
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]: A seven-letter name that is one of the most substantial, traditional, classic, and elegant names out there. However, it is very strong, and definitely fits the no-nonsense criteria. This is probably my very favorite for you. However, I’m guessing that with its popularity, you’ve already considered it.
[name_f]Eunice[/name_f]: Definitely quite a lot less common than many of my other recommendations, but I still think it fits the criteria. It has its roots in ancient society, and was very popular in the early 20th century, giving it traditional pedigree.
[name_f]Elise[/name_f]: I think this is a great option. It isn’t super short, much like your sons’ names, but is very to-the-point, classic, and strong while remaining feminine. [name_f]Elyse[/name_f] is another spelling.
[name_f]Eileen[/name_f]: A variation of [name_f]Helen[/name_f], with tons of popularity in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f] and even in the US during the 1920s. I think this makes it traditional, and it’s a bright name without being frilly or flowery.
[name_f]Erin[/name_f]: Perhaps a bit dated, but I definitely think it deserves a look due to its well-known status, straightforward style, and simplicity combined withs strength.
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f]: Another name that I really like for you. Super strong, straightforward, and traditional, without seeming dated. It would fit right in with today’s names, but not be lost in the crowd.
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]: This might be the jackpot: The ultimate traditional, classic name with lots of meaning and heft but zero frills.
I hope this was helpful. My favorites for you are [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Esther[/name_f], and [name_f]Eve[/name_f] from this list. Best of luck!
I’ll see what I can do:

[name_u]Elliot[/name_u]
[name_f]Easter[/name_f]
[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Evette[/name_f]
My first thought was [name_u]Ellison[/name_u]! You may also like:
[name_u]Ellington[/name_u]
[name_u]Everett/name_u
[name_u]Emmett/name_u
[name_f]Emmanuelle[/name_f]
[name_u]Evan[/name_u]
Thank you all so much for your help!! I know all the thought that goes into this help, and I really and truly appreciate it. So far, my tops are:
[name_f]Enid[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Elise[/name_f] (maybe ultimately too flowery… but I like it initially)
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
Thank you, thank you!! Any additional thoughts are greatly appreciated. Some additional info: We prefer girls’ names that were not initially boys’ names – with the possible exception of [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], but I’m not sure I could bring myself to use it for that reason. We also dislike nicknames and ideally would find a name that doesn’t lend itself toward any, but fully recognize that decision is mostly out of our hands once she gets older and given how limited we already are, may need to let that one go. Lastly, our last name is two syllables and has a long ‘ee’ sound in it, so while I love Eve for it’s tradition and simplicity and strength, I’m afraid it’s too rhymey with our last name.
I definitely plan to look into [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] – thank you for that suggestion. It might be too far out there for us, but then again, it might be perfect.
Also, while we are pretty tied to E names, I’d love to hear those who responded’s thoughts if you are veritably bursting with a name you think is perfect for us but doesn’t start with E. You all were so helpful and now that you know a bit more about my thoughts, I’d love to hear yours!
Sorry for the long post – I’ve been away from posting for a while and brevity is not my strong suit. Thank you again!! <3
Traditional, no-nonsense names that don’t begin in an E, but still don’t end in an A or lend themselves to nicknames:
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Martha[/name_f] ends in an A, but otherwise fits your criteria
Would you be willing to share one, if not all, of your sons’ names to get a stronger sense of your style preferences?
In the meantime: like [name_f]Enid[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Elise[/name_f], [name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Estelle[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], and [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f], but not starting with ‘E’:

We have a 2yr old [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and absolutely love her name. We also had [name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] on our list.
