Eamon

Would like to know what people think about the name [name]Eamon[/name]. I’m discovering Irish names and think it’s nice but I dont know much about it, can anyone enlighten me?

It’s popular here ([name]Sydney[/name], Australia) but I don’t care for it, though it is better than [name]Evan[/name].

It’s pronounced ay-mon and it’s related to [name]Edmund[/name]; I prefer [name]Edmund[/name].

I think [name]Eoin[/name]/[name]Eoghan[/name] are nicer but probably more difficult to use.

I like it a lot. It is so different but sounds similar…does that make sense? Haha.

I like that your looking for a unique name. But, the first thing that came to mind when I read it was that kids could tease him by calling him Demon since it rhymes. You might like [name]Easton[/name] as an alternative. It has a similar sound - good luck with the new baby.

@mom2bof3 —It is pronounced Ay mon or Ay man, so it dosen’t rhyme with Demon (though it might depend on the accent).

To answer the original question, I actually do like [name]Eamon[/name]. Its a nice, masculine Irish name but will probably have pronounciation issues (but then that happens with a lot of names). And I believe it may be the Gaelic equivalent of [name]Edmund[/name].

Overall I like it, probably will have pronounciation issues but if you are okay with that then it should be fine.

I like it! It’s unique so if you use it your son would be the only [name]Eamon[/name]!

And as far as the teasing about the demon thing- I’m using the name [name]Damon[/name] if I have a son- and that’s even closer than [name]Eamon[/name] and I’m not worried about it! I don’t think it would happen very often if at all with [name]Eamon[/name]…because as gwynedde said it doesn’t really rhyme or look like demon…

Good [name]Luck[/name]!!

I love it, although I think you probably will get mispronunciations depending on where you live. I read a lot of [name]Maeve[/name] Binchy as a teenager so I love all of the Irish names that she uses. You could go to her books for more ideas.

I want to [name]LOVE[/name] this name so much but every time I say it out loud I think I am in [name]Jamaica[/name]… sadness.

UPDATE: because I want to love this name so bad so I looked more into the pronunciation and listened to some recordings and feel better about it. When I hear it, it sounds like “Ay-mun”, which is pretty much Edmund without the D’s. My grandpa (rip) who I love SO much is named Edmond and I have been considering using it as a fn or mn and Eamon would be a wonderful alternative. My grandma, his wife is half Irish. I could probably still use the nn Eddie.

My pseudo cousin is named [name]Eamon[/name]. He’s awesome and has just enough quirkiness to go great with his name.
Oh and he and his family pronounce it AY-men.

[name]Eamon[/name] is a great name. [name]One[/name] of Australia’s top male swimmers is named [name]Eamon[/name] [name]Sullivan[/name]. A really good young role model!

I was running it by DH and he said it sounds too much like an Islamic holy man or something, Imam? I have no idea what he is talking about. He hates every name lol. I am one turn down away from not giving him any naming rights!

I love it, actually! I probably wouldn’t use it, but I love seeing others consider it, and I think [name]Eamon[/name] is a really great name. I’d always liked it with [name]Matthew[/name]–[name]Eamon[/name] [name]Matthew[/name] or [name]Matthew[/name] [name]Eamon[/name]–but I think it’s pretty easy to pair up, it’s really handsome. [name]Eamon[/name] [name]Auguste[/name] might be nice.

I’m a big fan of [name]Eamon[/name]. It’s on my short list. DH’s family is Irish, so we will ultimately choose an Irish name for a boy. I like it because it sounds strong and is more unusual than say [name]Conner[/name] or [name]Sean[/name]. Another huge crush of mine is the Welsh name [name]Galen[/name]. It reminds me of [name]Eamon[/name], because they both have the strong a sound. DH is afraid that an adolescent boy named [name]Galen[/name] will get teased, but I love it!

Should point out I’m not expecting! Sorry, I posted so late at night I didnt think to include that, I see a lot of good points on whats great about this name and whats problematic. Thanks for all the info. I’m finding that I really go like Irish boys names

I think [name]Eamon[/name] is a wonderful Irish name (pronounced AY-mun). It is often given to boys in [name]Ireland[/name] due to its strong connection to [name]Eamon[/name] de [name]Valera[/name], a republican revolutionary who became [name]Ireland[/name]'s president. The name is the Gaelic equivalent of [name]Edmund[/name] and it would be an excellent alternative to popular [name]Aidan[/name]. The name can also be spelled with a double “n” - [name]Eamonn[/name]. The only possible drawback: although pretty unique in [name]North[/name] [name]America[/name], it may blend in with all of the other names that end in a similar fashion ([name]Aiden[/name], [name]Caden[/name], [name]Jayden[/name], [name]Braedan[/name] etc…). However, I wouldn’t let that stop me from choosing it!

[QUOTE=meganelaine;1465933 DH is afraid that an adolescent boy named [name]Galen[/name] will get teased, but I love it![/QUOTE] I have an Uncle [name]Galen[/name], so the name is very masculine to me and I dont hear the “gay” sound.

I like the name. It’s different, but not weird. I waver on whether or not I’d use it personally, but I like it. I know someone with the name and I always thought it was an interesting name. He pronounced it ay-mon as PPs mentioned.

My husband’s cousin has an [name]Eamon[/name]. Otherwise it would be on our list for sure. I was worried that the pronunciation would be confusing ([name]Amen[/name], Aye-man, Ee-mon) but it hasn’t been a problem. It’s unusual, but not really out there.

I do think it’s pretty strongly tied to it’s Irish origins, and I’d probably assume that anyone with that name would have at least some Irish heritage but it’s probably not necessry.

I love [name]Eamon[/name]. Very handsome and classy. I’m a fan!
