We have an older child with a speech disorder, so we’re looking for a girl’s name that would be easy for him to pronounce. We’re not particularly interested in top 10-20 names. Right now, our top choice is [name_f]Ada[/name_f] but I can’t decide whether I love it or not. Any ideas?
Are their any particular sounds it finds it harder or easier to say?
I’m going for two syllables because that is often easier:
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Evie[/name_f]
[name_f]Eva[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f]
[name_f]Gina[/name_f]
[name_f]Nina[/name_f]
[name_f]Lila[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Dora[/name_f]
[name_f]Layla[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Nell[/name_f]
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_f]Callie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ellen[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Anna[/name_f]
[name_f]Liza[/name_f]
[name_f]Delia[/name_f]
[name_f]Una[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Nina[/name_f]
I think [name_f]Ada[/name_f] is a nice choice!! I’ve been crushing on it a lot lately
Other ideas…
[name_u]Skye[/name_u]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f]
[name_f]Susan[/name_f]
[name_u]Julie[/name_u]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Zoe[/name_f]
[name_f]Heidi[/name_f]
[name_f]Judith[/name_f]
[name_f]May[/name_f]
[name_f]Anne[/name_f]
[name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
I like [name_f]Ada[/name_f] a lot!
I second the suggestions of [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and [name_f]Molly[/name_f]. They are names my 18 month old could probably pronounce so perhaps they are okay for your son? [name_f]Isla[/name_f], though not normally a fav of mine (too trendy), seems like it would be easy too. Other ideas:
[name_u]Dana[/name_u]
[name_u]Eden[/name_u]
[name_f]Annie[/name_f]
[name_f]Amanda[/name_f] “[name_f]Manda[/name_f]” or [name_u]Mandy[/name_u]
[name_f]Aina[/name_f]
[name_u]Penny[/name_u]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f] (if ‘s’ isn’t a problem)
Our son can say all vowel sounds, as well as M, B, P, D, T, N, and usually G. Some harder sounds, like S and L he can say if they are at the end of words. H, R, and TH are pretty much impossible for him right now. Complicated, I know!!
So far, I like Mae, Maeve, Evie, Nina, and would be into Anne/Anna if it weren’t for a family connection. I will have to check to see if the Vs in some of those names come out more like D’s, which changes them dramatically!
[name_f]Edie[/name_f] is another short name you could consider.
[name_f]Ada[/name_f] is beautiful! [name_m]How[/name_m] about:
[name_f]Anne[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Mae[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
With [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] I can see that pronouncing the V as a D would be problamatic, but with [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Edie[/name_f] is just as nice of a name!
[name_f]Ada[/name_f] seems to work well with your criteria. [name_f]Ida[/name_f] would be a little more unusual. Although it’s not on your list, what about [name_f]Claire[/name_f]/[name_u]Clare[/name_u]?
[name_f]Amy[/name_f]
[name_f]Beth[/name_f]
[name_f]Dawn[/name_f]
[name_f]Dora[/name_f]
[name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Mina[/name_f]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f]
[name_u]Piper[/name_u]
[name_f]Tess[/name_f]/[name_f]Tessa[/name_f]
It seems that [name_f]Ada[/name_f] fits your criteria well, and I think others have made a lot of good suggestions. Is his impediment something speech therapy is helping him to overcome? Or will he deal with it his whole life? If it’s something he’ll eventually overcome, and you are feeling a little trapped by choosing a name he can say now, I would suggest choosing any name you like and not worrying about it. He’ll call her what he calls her, or you can supply a short nickname to call her ([name_f]Ada[/name_f] could be short for [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], for example, or [name_u]Pen[/name_u] for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]). [name_m]Little[/name_m] guys, impediment or no, tend to mispronounce their sibling’s name for awhile, anyway. My daughter [name_u]Haley[/name_u] was called [name_m]Hi[/name_m]-ya for awhile by her big sister, and [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] has been called all variations of her name: Yissa, [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-ya, [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-sa, Hah-la (she and [name_u]Haley[/name_u] were both called that at the same time, and [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] was Nah-la, so it was a little tricky to know who was being talked to)…
There are some great suggestions on this thread–a lot to mull over! Thanks so much, everyone!
I’m trying to find that perfect balance of a name we can love for her lifetime and something that makes my son feel connected and efficacious since he struggles so much to be understood. I might be aiming too high but I think there are multiple options to add to the mix with [name_f]Ada[/name_f] that might just manage that!
[name_u]Abby[/name_u], [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], and [name_f]Mia[/name_f] are all pretty easy
[name_f]Bella[/name_f] / [name_f]Belle[/name_f]
[name_u]Penny[/name_u]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]
[name_f]Tilly[/name_f]
[name_u]Quinn[/name_u]
[name_f]Paige[/name_f]
[name_u]June[/name_u] / [name_f]Juno[/name_f]
[name_f]Anya[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Zara[/name_f]
[name_f]Adele[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f]
[name_f]Leda[/name_f]
[name_f]Thalie[/name_f] ([name_u]Tal[/name_u]-ee)
[name_f]Zoey[/name_f]
[name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Alma[/name_f]
[name_f]Nova[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Holly[/name_f]
[name_f]Maia[/name_f] / [name_f]Maya[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Megan[/name_f]
[name_f]Lila[/name_f]
