I love the blog post on the Eccentric Aristocrat naming style, I feel like it describes “my” style too. The only problem is, the names listed were too frilly and/or out there for my taste, and the more obvious ones were…too obvious. Here are the criteria for EA;
It must be rooted in tradition, but not traditional.
Ex: [name]Edward[/name] no, [name]Edgar[/name] yes.
It must have a distinct gender identification, but not a conventional one.
Ex: [name]India[/name] could be a supermodel or an international businesswoman, [name]Inigo[/name] could be a fashion designer or play polo.
It must be attractive but not beautiful.
Ex: Wellies paired with a ball gown, or moth eaten cashmere.
Here’s the list that is OK, but I have some reservations about some, usually popularity, pronunciation, or meaning:
I left some out that just didn’t click with me at all. I would appreciate it if you could help me expand my list of Eccentric Aristocratic (Girls’) names that are actually wearable! I have no trouble with the boys names, those seem more wearable somehow.
yay thank you! I love all of the lists! To reiterate, I’m looking for names that follow in the same vein as the first list I posted, not the second. I can totally imagine a [name]Winnie[/name] ([name]Winifred[/name]), a [name]Fenella[/name], a [name]Felicity[/name], and somehow a [name]Horatia[/name]. I also love the British feel of some of these, like [name]Daphne[/name] (although its in the top 1000 in the US) and [name]Georgiana[/name].
So far the E.A names that have stuck out to me are:
[name]Winifred[/name]
[name]Ambrosia[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name] (but its popularity is offputting)
[name]Horatia[/name] (but if [name]Harlow[/name] is too close for some…)
[name]Fenella[/name]
[name]Millicent[/name]
[name]Wallis[/name]
[name]Marit[/name]
[name]Agnes[/name]
[name]Honora[/name]
[name]Lenore[/name]
[name]Cassandra[/name]
[name]Asteria[/name]
Circen
[name]Georgiana[/name]
[name]Daphne[/name]
I feel like the “more obvious” nameberry choices are actually more my style, but then I also feel that the more out there ones are used way less frequently, which makes them more Eccentric Aristocratic than [name]Beatrix[/name] or [name]Violet[/name].
These are the names I would have put in that category (not counting some that I’ve seen mentioned already, but there may still be repeats). I also tried not to include feminissima names, but I tend to really like those names so YMMV.
[name]Amabel[/name]
[name]Amity[/name]
[name]Aurelia[/name]
[name]Briony[/name]
[name]Cressida[/name]
[name]Delphina[/name]
[name]Edwina[/name]
[name]Elspeth[/name]
[name]Emmeline[/name]
[name]Eugenie[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Henriette[/name]
Jocosa
[name]Lavender[/name]
[name]Primrose[/name]
[name]Sibyl[/name]
[name]Verity[/name]
[name]Zara[/name]
All of the suggestions are absolutely lovely! I’m now trying to pair them up; perhaps a more conservative E.A name in the first spot, with a more eccentric middle (or two!).
thanks ssskyyy! I guess we posted at the same time. The names that seem the most fitting from your list are: [name]Wellesley[/name], [name]Pearla[/name], [name]Ursula[/name], and [name]Vesta[/name].
