Edan vs. Eddan vs. Edden

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] All,

I am due in 2 months and grappling with the spelling of my baby boy’s name. I see three possibilities. What does everyone think? I really don’t want him to be called “Eden” but also don’t want a weird looking name. Thanks for the input!

  1. [name_m]Edan[/name_m]
  2. Eddan
  3. Edden

P.S. we want the name to be pronounced EDD-uhn

I think that in English-speaking countries, [name_m]Edan[/name_m] would be pronounced EE-dan and Edden would get mistaken for [name_f]Eden[/name_f] a lot, so I’d go for Eddan!

I would pronounce them…
[name_m]Edan[/name_m] = EE-dahn
Eddan = EDD-ahn
Edden = EDD-in

I think Eddan would probably be the most intuitive, just because Edden looks so much like [name_f]Eden[/name_f].

Eddan or Edden!
I think [name_m]Edan[/name_m] might be pronounced [name_f]Eden[/name_f].

Eddan would be the one I would use for the pronunciation you want.

I prefer the look of [name_m]Edan[/name_m] and I think the ‘a’ would flag up to me it might be pronounced differently? But I do feel Eddan might make it most obvious? Maybe try asking those around you how they would read it?

I also completely agree that Eddan is by far the best of your options for the pronunciation you want. Have you considered using an “h”?

I think Ehdan or Ehden both work well without having to use the double d and have a very obvious pronunciation.

I also think Edhan and Edhen look the best of all the options and give you the “ed” shorting right in the name. H before the D is a more intuitive pronunciation but I think Edhan looks like more of a proper name than double d’s.

Edhan has my vote!

What a beautiful name for your son! Good luck with finding the right spelling!

Oh I love [name_f]Eden[/name_f] with this pronunciation! He’s one of the middles for my favorite boy’s name.

I do understand the concerns with [name_f]Eden[/name_f] though, I like Edden best from your options… my instinct is to emphasize [name_m]Dan[/name_m] with the -dan spellings… met an [name_m]Ardan[/name_m] once who got super mad I called him [name_f]Arden[/name_f] instead of ar DAN, so anything ending in -Dan now, I subconsciously wonder if it’s like den or dan lol.

Good luck!

Edden would be the most intuitive for me, it’s just different enough to make me think its probably not [name_f]Eden[/name_f]. Like @ashthedreamer I would probably emphasize ‘dan’ with the [name_m]Dan[/name_m] ending. I also like the suggestion of Ehden, I feel like that’s the best spelling to get the pronunciationyou want without correction.

You could also consider [name_f]Eaden[/name_f] (like hEAd) and Eoden (like lEOpard) they would both probably get mispronounced, but I feel they’re different enough to slow people down and maybe have them ask for clarification, rather than just saying [name_f]Eden[/name_f].

[name_m]Edan[/name_m] will probably be pronounced with “ee” at the beginning.

I think either Eddan or Edden works, but I prefer the look of Eddan.
