Agree w/ pp that it’s very sweet of you to think about whether your daughter will like her name.
My name, [name]Anne[/name], seems to have a similar feel to [name]Edith[/name] and [name]Frances[/name], plain, unfrilly, and a little bit old. Personally, I’ve never had a problem with my name. When I was younger, I wished I had a frillier name, but as an adult, I like that it sounds professional and I’ve changed to [name]Annie[/name] as a nn because it sounds spunkier. I know you’ve said she would go by [name]Edith[/name], but it’s a real possibility she will prefer to go by [name]Edie[/name] or [name]Frances[/name], [name]Frankie[/name]. I don’t see a problem as I think both are cute nns, but if you don’t like them, you’d probably be annoyed to hear your daughter use them (I know my mother is!).
As for [name]Ramona[/name], this name feels like a [name]Matilda[/name] to me. I agree that the nn [name]Mona[/name] is not the best, but I think the name is girly, spunky, and still traditional.
Another thing to remember - your daughter will (probably) have a lot in common with you in terms of taste as she will grow up with you, so while a lot of people on the board might not like it, your daughter might still because she will be a mini-you. So maybe another good gauge would be to ask friends who have similar taste to you. [name]Just[/name] a thought!
I do know a little [name]Ramona[/name]! I don’t know her well–she is in a toddler gymnastics class with my daughter, so she is under age three. She has dark hair and is extremely cute, and as far as I can tell always goes by the full name [name]Ramona[/name].
I know you’ve had lots of feedback, but here are my thoughts, as long as I’m posting:
First, who the heck is [name]Edith[/name] Bunker? I think this is a great name, and I associate it mainly with [name]Edith[/name] [name]Wharton[/name], but also with [name]Edith[/name] [name]Ann[/name] (the [name]Lily[/name] [name]Tomlin[/name] character–on [name]Sesame[/name] [name]Street[/name] when I was a kid), and the adorable little girl in the movie Despicable Me.
[name]Frances[/name]–this is my second favorite of the three. The [name]Frances[/name] books by [name]Russell[/name] Hoban are my two-year-old’s favorites–I think she’d absolutely love to be named [name]Frances[/name]!
[name]Ramona[/name]–I mostly think of [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Quimby[/name]. The name is not my style but I don’t think a kid would necessarily not want to have this name.
My middle name is [name]Frances[/name] and my mom’s first name is [name]Frances[/name]. As a child I detested the name, especially considering my mom didn’t care for her own name that much either! As I grew up, I started to like the name more and more since it was someone unique amongst all the [name]Nicoles[/name], Jennys and Kristens. Now as an adult, my “nickname” has actually become longer than my real name as Leslia [name]Francesca[/name] since people tend to call me by my first and middle name together. I have really grown to like [name]Francesca[/name] and would even consider naming a daughter that name. My relatives call my mom “[name]Franny[/name]” though, and it really irritates me. I don’t like the sound of that nickname at all.
I think [name]Edith[/name] sounds lovely, but I it may be a bit mature sounding for a little girl…probably something she will grow to like with age though. [name]Ramona[/name], unfortunately, I associate with a crazy reality tv lady, so I really don’t care for it.
I love the name [name]Edith[/name] so much that I named my baby daughter [name]Edith[/name] (born 4 weeks ago). She is [name]Edith[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] and a sister to [name]Audrey[/name] [name]Isabelle[/name].
So obviously [name]Edith[/name] is my favourite of your choices. [name]Frances[/name] would be my second choice and I also don’t mind [name]Ramona[/name] but I like the other two better.
With naming our daughter [name]Edith[/name], my only reservation was “will she like her name?”. My husband and I both love it and don’t really care what others may think but really hope that she likes her name. You can never really answer that question though and you can never be sure with any name whether the child will grow up liking it.
Now that she’s arrived, the name [name]Edith[/name] suits her perfectly and is surprisingly cute on a baby. I’ve also been pleasantly surprised by how many people have said to us that they love the name (although the people that hate it probably wouldn’t say anything to us)
My favorite out of the three is [name]Ramona[/name]. [name]Edith[/name] is okay for me but I like the nn [name]Edie[/name] more. I’m not a fan of [name]Frances[/name]. It’s my middle name and I was always uncomfortable telling people because it wasn’t pretty in my opinion. I’m 18 and [name]Frances[/name] was my grandmother’s name. I do love [name]Francesca[/name] and the nn [name]Frankie[/name] though. I’d actually be happy to have [name]Francesca[/name] as my name. It’s always refreshing to hear something other than [name]Nicole[/name], [name]Jenn[/name] and [name]Lindsay[/name] for me.
I think [name]Ramona[/name] is helped by the [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Quimby[/name] books (maybe already mentioned?) which seem to be popular. It’s my personal favorite of the three. [name]Edith[/name] seems the most daring and difficult-- it would be most easily pulled off by a very glamorous, self-assured girl/woman. A bookworm or more quiet type would I think not be helped out of her shell by such an unusual and (to some ears) dated choice. “[name]Edie[/name]” is cute though, and indeed close to [name]Evie[/name]/[name]Addie[/name] etc.
I don’t think [name]Frances[/name] has ever quite plunged all the way out of popularity (like [name]Edith[/name], or [name]Beatrice[/name], or [name]Matilda[/name], etc.) I know a handful. One goes by “[name]Franny[/name]” and the other (Latina and actually named [name]Francisca[/name]) by “[name]Frankie[/name]”. Neither of them hates their name.
My favorite is [name]Edith[/name]! After learning about [name]Edith[/name] [name]Piaf[/name] and [name]Edith[/name] [name]Wharton[/name], I was like “Wow! Great name!” I didn’t know who [name]Edith[/name] Bunker was (she had been referenced before, but I had never paid attention to her name) so I wikied her. If people don’t remember the reference they probably won’t make the connection. I like [name]Edith[/name] because it classy, unusual and pretty. [name]Frances[/name] is nice, but I automatically think of the [name]Saint[/name]. and though [name]Ramona[/name] is nice, I think of [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Quimby[/name]. She’s cute, but for some reason, I’m like “Ehhh” You can’t go wrong with either of them!
Best of luck!
