My husband and I are very happily expecting our first child. A daughter to be born in [name]November[/name]. We have a list of names started, but we are concerned about some because we think there is a greater likelihood she might end up disliking her name. It’s one thing for us to write a list of our faves and it’s another for a girl/woman to live with it. What do you think about these names? Does anyone know someone with one of these names and know how she feels about it?
[name]Edith[/name] might be my current favorite. I am not as concerned as my husband about this one since there are similarities to other names currently popular ([name]Ada[/name]/[name]Eva[/name]/[name]Evie[/name]). We would call her [name]Edith[/name] rather than the nn [name]Edie[/name].
We don’t have many other names on our list since we have a very tricky ln.
I love both [name]Edith[/name] and [name]Frances[/name]! I think a young girl would like either (I know a 10 year old [name]Frances[/name] and she loves her name). And even if you don’t use [name]Edie[/name] or [name]Francie[/name], she has the option if she wants a nn. I like [name]Ramona[/name], but I wouldn’t use it myself. For some reason it sounds a bit harsh to me, and I don’t love the nn [name]Mona[/name] (not that you would use it, but others might).
Congrats on your first pregnancy! I love [name]Edith[/name] and [name]Frances[/name] and like [name]Ramona[/name]. I think the name you choose depends on which one best reflects the “style” which is most appealing to you. You should also consider the names of future children when choosing your first child’s name. I think any of your three choices would be names that any girl could like. My faves in order of preference are:
I love vintage names so [name]Edith[/name] is right up my alley! The name makes me think of author [name]Edith[/name] [name]Wharton[/name]. I also like names that are solid and classy but still pack a punch like [name]Frances[/name]. [name]Ramona[/name] would be my third choice as its usage is not as established as [name]Edith[/name] and [name]Frances[/name]. All the best, [name]Mischa[/name].
Congratulations! I adore [name]Ramona[/name] and [name]Edith[/name], and I like [name]Frances[/name]. I personally would love to be named either of these names, although I do sometimes feel that I like the nickname [name]Edie[/name] better than [name]Edith[/name]. Also, I can imagine almost anyone named [name]Edith[/name], apart from a teen. I really can picture a little girl who previously loved her name, really disliking it through her teen years… however, with so many [name]Adas[/name], Emmas and Rubys an [name]Edith[/name] would probably go unnoticed in her generation, I suppose.
[name]Ramona[/name] is gorgeous and incredibly fun, and I instantly think of the British born actress [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Marquez[/name] (Ramona Marquez - National Television Awards Red Carpet Interview (2011) - YouTube). I’m not really keen on any of the nicknames, which puts me off because I’m the kind of person who instantly shortens just about everything without even noticing  [name]Nona[/name] is alright. I really would love to be called [name]Ramona[/name], though.
[name]Frances[/name] is alright. I don’t know why, but I just don’t love it like others that are a similar style. It’s vintage and perfectly respectable. It’s cute on a little girl and sounds sensible yet quirky on a woman. However, I personally don’t find it very attractive. I much prefer [name]Fran[/name] or [name]Franny[/name] alone, or even [name]Francesca[/name]. I’ve known a two Francess; one was a very snobby little girl, the other was a girl who bullied me at school - so maybe it’s just down to bad experience? I don’t know.
Good luck on choosing something fabulous, by the way, as I’m sure you will!
The only name I like is [name]Ramona[/name]. It feels young and fun, with the cute nicknames [name]Remy[/name], and [name]Mona[/name], if you wanted to use them.
[name]Frances[/name]-To be it feels dated, and old lady-ish. It’s vintage, but not ready to make a comeback, in my opinion. [name]Francie[/name] might be cute, but I really hate [name]Fran[/name] and [name]Frannie[/name]. I know that for myself, I’m so glad this is not my name, and I wouldn’t give it to a little girl either.
[name]Edith[/name]-I don’t feel as strongly about [name]Edith[/name] as I do about [name]Frances[/name], but I still don’t like it, especially if you’ll only be calling her [name]Edith[/name], and not using a nickname. I don’t think it’s close enough to [name]Ada[/name]/[name]Evie[/name]/[name]Ava[/name]/[name]Eva[/name] to be comparable, and it also feel like an old lady name to me.
I know that’s kind of harsh. Sorry. If it was me, the only name I’d consider using for my daughter would be [name]Ramona[/name]. The only people I know of named [name]Edith[/name] and [name]Frances[/name] ([name]Fran[/name]) are between 50-60 years old, so maybe that’s why I’m having such a problem with those names for a little girl.
I’m also anti [name]Frances[/name]. [name]Even[/name] though it’s almost time for this name to come back around I still hear [name]Fran[/name] as an unattractive name. For some reason it’s not as elegant and I don’t see a lady aging gracefully. I see one of those supermarket pests who is always complaining about double coupons and how her groceries are packed.
[name]Don[/name]'t like [name]Frances[/name] at all, although [name]Francesca[/name] is lovely but the nn’s are problematic who wants a [name]Frankie[/name] for a daughter?
I don’t like the moan in [name]Ramona[/name]
I think [name]Edith[/name] is too old fashioned why not [name]Eloise[/name], [name]Elodie[/name], [name]Elise[/name], [name]Ellen[/name], [name]Eleanor[/name]?
I looked up my mother’s name which is [name]Maxine[/name] in the Nameberry database.
It says "Playing mah-jongg down at the clubhouse with [name]Bernice[/name] and [name]Thelma[/name]. "
I think [name]Bernice[/name], [name]Thelma[/name] and [name]Maxine[/name] are playing with [name]Edith[/name], [name]Frances[/name] and [name]Ramona[/name].
Sorry , they just sound old ladyish to me. Of course you do have the book series “[name]Ramona[/name] the Brave”.
My name is [name]Edith[/name] but I’ve gone by [name]Edie[/name] my whole life. When I was younger I didn’t really like my name because I was the only [name]Edith[/name]/[name]Edie[/name] my age (I still have yet to meet another twenty-something with this name!). However, a few years ago I started to really like my name and “own” it so to speak. So if you do use this name for your daughter I believe it will eventually grow on her, even if she doesn’t always like it. Good luck!
STRONGLY dislike [name]Edith[/name]. As pp said, I am glad it is not my name. [name]Edith[/name] Bunker anyone? There is a fine line in giving your child a name that stands out and one that is scoffed at. Why cross that line?
[name]Frances[/name] and [name]Ramona[/name] are ok, but I would never use them. I love [name]Rollo[/name]'s suggestion of [name]Francesca[/name] or [name]Eloise[/name]. Gorgeous!
Hello and congrats on your upcoming baby!
Bless your heart for considering your child and how she may feel about her name, I think many folks so want to be cool and different that they forget that a human being actually has to live with the name.
This is what i do when considering a name… would i want to be called that name? Is it a name I would like? Is it pretty? Is it attractive and pleasing to the ear?
I also consider our current naming climate, so as we are aware feminine, pretty and classic names are in vogue right now…[name]Isabella[/name], [name]Olivia[/name], [name]Sophia[/name] are currently popular.
[name]Frances[/name] is a substantial, vintagy and classy name, but kind of plain in comparison to names above [name]IMO[/name].
[name]Ramona[/name] again very vintagy, not too pleasing to the ear ( I hear [name]Mona[/name] or Moaning)
[name]Edith[/name] I really don’t like ,very [name]Edith[/name] Bunker old fashioned, not at all pretty [name]IMO[/name]
[name]Frances[/name] would be my fave of the 3 but i would pair it with a very pretty middle name.
At the end of the day, she is your daughter to name, I wish you good luck!
[name]May[/name] I suggest some pretty, vintagy classics for your consideration?
[name]How[/name] about:
[name]Clara[/name]
[name]Jane[/name]
[name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Cecily[/name]
[name]Cecilia[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name] ( I used to hate this name until I met the cutest, smartest, 4 year old [name]Ophelia[/name]!)
I love the names [name]Frances[/name] and [name]Edith[/name].
I think it’s so adorable when little girls have boyish nicknames so I would probably nickname her [name]Frankie[/name]. In fact, I just read a [name]Young[/name] Adult novel where the title character is [name]Frankie[/name] (short for [name]Frances[/name] of course). She was so quirky and spirited, I just fell in love with the nickname.
I love [name]Edith[/name]. It reminds me of [name]Edith[/name] [name]Wharton[/name]. [name]Edie[/name] really is an adorable nickname.
I like the name [name]Ramona[/name], but it still reminds me of a mischievous little girl because of the [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Quimby[/name] books. I’d love to meet someone my age named [name]Ramona[/name] to change that image in my head though.
Of the three I like [name]Frances[/name] best-Simple, classy and dignified. I would stick with the formal full name and avoid any of the [name]Fran[/name], [name]Frankie[/name] etc nicknames. It also seems the one that would date the least.
[name]Edith[/name] is a fine name and I think it’s been long enough for the [name]Edith[/name] Bunker association to have faded but it is still rather fusty and old feeling rather than vintage.
[name]Ramona[/name] is okay and the nickname [name]Romy[/name] is great but of the three it has the least appeal.
I love the name [name]Ramona[/name] and like the other two. I love the nn [name]Frankie[/name] for [name]Frances[/name]. [name]Edith[/name] is a fine name – barely anyone under the age of 50 (and certainly no one under the age of 10!) remembers [name]Edith[/name] Bunker or whatever her name was. I think old lady names are the best!
Thanks for feedback! It’s interesting how people’s associations vary. Probably influenced by location and age. For me, [name]Frances[/name] reminds me of that precocious little badger-girl in the [name]Frances[/name] books. But not too strongly. While [name]Ramona[/name]'s association with [name]Ramona[/name]-the-Pest is too strong. Hard to break. And [name]Edith[/name] simply seems like an antique-y name. It reminds me of [name]Edith[/name] [name]Wharton[/name], [name]Edith[/name] [name]Piaf[/name] and the old children’s books about a doll [name]Edith[/name] who lived with some teddy bears. [name]Edie[/name], unfortunately, reminds me more of the mod-era, anorexic It Girl [name]Edie[/name] Sedgwick who OD’d, even though I love the actress [name]Edie[/name] Falco. We live in [name]London[/name] where names like [name]Archie[/name], [name]Harry[/name], [name]Elsie[/name], [name]Florence[/name] and [name]Rose[/name] are popular baby names, so [name]Edith[/name] is more popular over here than in US, and [name]Edie[/name] is one of the fastest rising names of last year. [name]Evie[/name] is in the top 10. [name]Ramona[/name] is far less common in UK – not even listed on the large UK name site I checked. Our daughter needs to feel comfortable on both sides of the Atlantic, since we may move back to the States at some point or not.
Thanks for the recs too. [name]Clara[/name] is actually my favorite girl’s name! Unfortunately, it is a tongue-twister with our last name. [name]Alas[/name]. My other favorite girl’s name [name]Rebecca[/name] would go lovely with our ln, but it’s my sister’s name so could only be used as a mn. Once we ponder our list of names a bit, I’ll create a new post with the fn ln possibilities. The feedback on [name]Frances[/name], [name]Ramona[/name], [name]Edith[/name] has been great. If anyone has any more thoughts, keep 'em coming. Especially if you know of any young Ediths, Ramonas or Franceses.
I’ll be honest. If I were a little girl, I would hate being [name]Edith[/name]. [name]Ramona[/name] or [name]Frances[/name] I could live with, I suppose, but I wouldn’t love it.
I know a lot of Berries on here love vintage name…my current favorite for a daughter is [name]Clara[/name], so I’m probably one of them…but it’s not the old-ladyish-ness of [name]Edith[/name] that gets me, it’s just a completely unappealing sound to my ears. The long E and the “th” sound just fall flat. [name]Frances[/name] and [name]Ramona[/name] could both work, but are nms.
I love both [name]Frances[/name] and [name]Edith[/name], not fond at all of [name]Ramona[/name] (but then I don’t like [name]Raymond[/name] either). I haven’t met a young [name]Edith[/name] yet (although I’d like to) but I’ve known a [name]Frances[/name] who is my daughter’s age (26) and she was called [name]Frances[/name], not [name]Frankie[/name] or [name]Frannie[/name]. She was the daughter of a conductor who was a friend of my husband’s, a very composed, serene, sweet girl. My cousin’s name is [name]Francesca[/name], but her dad is Italian.
I would rather hear [name]Frances[/name] or [name]Edith[/name] on a little girl than some of the made up names I do hear. I say use what you love.
There’s also: [name]Enid[/name], [name]Jean[/name], [name]Maud[/name], [name]Linnet[/name], [name]Rowena[/name], [name]Elinor[/name], and [name]Irena[/name] as well.
