[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone!
I think it’s probably my first time posting in this part of nameberry - I’m usually more active in the girls section but I do have a query- (not expecting currently, just wondering)
Which name do you prefer and why - [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] or [name_u]Edward[/name_u]?
I think they’re both beautiful classics. I also love the nicknames [name_u]Eddie[/name_u], [name_m]Ted[/name_m] and [name_u]Teddy[/name_u].
Thank you!
Definitely Edmund for me! While I think of both as vintage, I think of Edward as a bit old-mannish, whereas Edmund feels more elegant and dark academia-like!
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m]!
I find [name_u]Edward[/name_u] quite boring and a bit stuffy, tbh. Also, still makes me think of [name_u]Twilight[/name_u], though that’s probably not a huge association for people who didn’t grow up with it.
However, I think that most [name_m]Ed[/name_m]- named-people will eventually go by [name_m]Ed[/name_m] or [name_m]Ted[/name_m] or [name_m]Ned[/name_m] anyway, and how much more exciting is it when you find out their name isn’t “just” [name_u]Edward[/name_u]!
And then there’s also the lovely [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] association
Came here just to say “oh no, don’t make me choose!” because I feel passionately about both of them. On different days one or the other stands out, but [name_u]Edward[/name_u] probably takes home the trophy more often! No particular reason why that I can pin down!
I love the nicknames Eddie/Ed to pieces, and I’ve considered Mundy for [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] before, but haven’t decided if I like it yet.
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m]. [name_u]Edward[/name_u] doesn’t roll off the tongue or sound as good.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite is [name_u]Edward[/name_u] !
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] by a lot!
I sort of stumble when I say [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] for some reason. I chose [name_u]Edward[/name_u] for a baby, i probably would chose [name_u]Eddie[/name_u] as a stand alone though
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] because it was my father’s middle, and it is my grandfather’s middle. They had the same name, but dad went by his first name. Papaw goes by “Eddie”.
Much prefer [name_u]Edward[/name_u] to [name_m]Edmund[/name_m]. [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] just sounds so stuffy to me, for some reason. Nicknames are great, though.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite version, however, is [name_m]Edwin[/name_m].
I much prefer [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] - it seems warmer/friendlier to me (maybe the n?).
Edmund, definitely! He’s warmer and cozier, nutmeg and cardamom My typewriter’s name is Edmund!
Edward makes me think of medical wards for some reason
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m]!
I love it because of [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_u]Pevensie[/name_u], and it makes the name feel wearable on a young kid. All of the Edward’s I’ve heard of have been [name_m]Ed[/name_m] or [name_u]Eddie[/name_u], but [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] feels like it could just be [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] and doesn’t have many strings attached. I loooove this name!!
Yes, me too! It also makes me think, for whatever reason, of an old balding man saying in a goofy voice, “Eddddwuuuuurd”. Why, I’m not sure! But with that said I do think Edward is a lovely choice, just not my preference.
edward! i don’t like the ‘mund’ sound of edmund, it comes across stuck-up and stiff to me for some reason
Hmmm, I think [name_u]Edward[/name_u]. A bit gentler
I like them both for different reasons
[name_u]Edward[/name_u] is more of a classic, and a little ‘brighter’, but it also feels a bit generic to me. This is possibly because it’s my brother’s middle name and I know for a fact it was chosen as a sort of ‘that’ll do’ option after my parents realised the mn they actually wanted didn’t work with the first name.
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] feels ‘darker’ with that ‘mund’ sound but I quite like the historical, medieval vibe that gives me (it’s a bit like bright [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] vs strong Rosamund). I like the [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] link - I used to be put off by his being a traitor at first, but I’ve come to appreciate his redemptive story arc
Both are wonderful with nn [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]!
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m]. It’s more crisp and debonair.
Interesting you should say that - that’s the vibe I get from Edward. Edward feels cosy and stalwart to me, while Edmund feels more reserved and austere.
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] with the nickname [name_m]Ned[/name_m].
