Edna?

What do you think of [name_f]Edna[/name_f]? Is it too dated or do you think it could fit in with all the other vintage names such as [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Florence[/name_f]?

Could [name_f]Edie[/name_f] work as a nickname or do you think it would have to be [name_m]Eddy[/name_m]?

My immediate and only association with the name is Dame [name_f]Edna[/name_f]… which is not a BAD association per se, but not an especially good one either! I like the idea of the nickname [name_f]Edie[/name_f] though, and I think [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is super cute!

I prefer [name_f]Edith[/name_f]. I’m not sure what it is with [name_f]Edna[/name_f], but I don’t love it. It’s not am awful name by any means though

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] has definitely grown on me, and I definitely think of [name_f]Edna[/name_f] in the same category. [name_f]Edie[/name_f] feels a little like a stretch, though not overly so. The problem would just be getting people to pronounce it the way you want when they’re assuming the “[name_m]Ed[/name_m]” sound.

I really don’t like [name_f]Edna[/name_f]. I definitely prefer [name_f]Edith[/name_f] to [name_f]Edna[/name_f] by a mile. I think [name_f]Edna[/name_f] is in the same vein as [name_f]Gladys[/name_f] or [name_u]Joyce[/name_u] and is just a little too dated to bring back yet.

I think [name_f]Edna[/name_f] is lovely to be honest, and I dislike that she’s always overlooked in terms of vintage names coming back. For a while, I had her on my list as [name_f]Edna[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Edna[/name_f] [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_f]Edna[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] and [name_f]Edna[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], I think? I think [name_f]Edie[/name_f] is a lovely nn for [name_f]Edna[/name_f] too

I agree. While I’d like to like it, I don’t think we’re there yet. When the world is ready to pull out [name_f]Gladys[/name_f], [name_f]Ethel[/name_f], [name_f]Hilda[/name_f], and [name_f]Mildred[/name_f] again, then I think we can revisit [name_f]Edna[/name_f]. I think it’s still far too grandma for 2015, though…especially when playgrounds are inundated with [name_u]Brinley[/name_u], [name_f]Kinley[/name_f], [name_f]Braylee[/name_f], Gracyn, [name_u]Addyson[/name_u], etc.

I agree that it is still too dated. What about [name_f]Enid[/name_f]? It can be pronounced eh-nihd or ee-nihd, so it’s more open to the NN [name_f]Edie[/name_f] too.

You see I actually really like [name_f]Ethel[/name_f], [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Mildred[/name_f] and honestly I’d think they’d fit in quite well in the playgrounds near me. I’m British so I’d be very surprised to find a [name_u]Brinley[/name_u], [name_f]Kinley[/name_f], [name_f]Braylee[/name_f], Gracyn or [name_u]Addyson[/name_u] here. I work with children and have moved around a lot of settings over the last 3 years and haven’t met any child with any of those names. I have met [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Sadie[/name_f], [name_f]Edie[/name_f], [name_m]Ferris[/name_m], [name_u]Alfie[/name_u], [name_u]Freddie[/name_u], [name_f]Gwennie[/name_f], [name_m]Albie[/name_m] etc so really round here they do tend to go for very traditional names. Obviously some names, possibly [name_f]Edna[/name_f], are still too dated to fit in but they have a better chance that say [name_f]Braylee[/name_f].

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]ENID[/name_f]! Argh, more names to add to the list. And I agree, [name_f]Enid[/name_f] is definitely more open to the nn [name_f]Edie[/name_f] than [name_f]Edna[/name_f] is. I think I actually prefer [name_f]Enid[/name_f] to [name_f]Edna[/name_f], and it could be a great alternative to the rising [name_f]Edith[/name_f] (which I’ve never actually been too sure off even when I love [name_f]Edie[/name_f]).

I saw the name and the song ‘Good [name_f]Morning[/name_f], [name_m]Baltimore[/name_m]’ popped into my head. [name_f]Edna[/name_f] is the name of [name_m]John[/name_m] Travolta’s character that he dressed in drag to play in the movie ‘Hairspray’ (which is also a Broadway production). [name_m]Just[/name_m] a thought…

No to [name_f]Edna[/name_f], sorry. It’s a nice name, but it’s not ready to be revived. [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is one of my faves though!

I feel [name_f]Edna[/name_f] is dated.

I would use [name_f]Edith[/name_f] instead. [name_f]Edna[/name_f] is just so old to me.

Like it!!!

My husband’s grandmother was [name_f]Edith[/name_f] (which I personally couldn’t use because I find too old lady still) and one of her best friends is [name_f]Edna[/name_f]. They are both lovely names on these women born in the 1920’s but I don’t think we are ready for them yet. My great grandmother was [name_f]Maude[/name_f] and it is only spoken of in our family as a joke (though I think that is worse than [name_f]Edna[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f]).

Obviously, for names to come back and be accepted someone has to use them first, but I’m unwilling to be the one.

That makes a big difference! Perhaps it’s better to say the United States is not yet ready for the likes of [name_f]Edna[/name_f]. We’re going through a cutsie-tryndee-creeatiff phase right now, and [name_f]Edna[/name_f] would just stand out like a plucked chicken on (most of) our playgrounds. Being British, you also probably don’t have the image of [name_f]Edna[/name_f] Krabappel in your head, which is the only association I have with the name.
