Eileen?

My best friend and I were talking about baby names. He knows I’m a namenerd, but we never actually discussed names before. He mentioned some of his favourite names for boys, which were interesting. And then he said his favourite name for a girl is [name_f]Eileen[/name_f]. I’ve never given [name_f]Eileen[/name_f] much thought, and I’m not sure what to think… The first thing that came to mind for me was the song Come on [name_f]Eileen[/name_f] by [name_f]Dexy[/name_f]'s midnight runners. My friend said this is partly why he loves the name so much.
So, any thoughts? Is it old fashioned, or just a classic? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like it? If you feel like making any [name_f]Eileen[/name_f] combo’s, please do.

To me [name_f]Eileen[/name_f] is reminiscent of great aunts you see once in a blue moon or at family weddings, I wouldn’t use it personally.
An alternative might be [name_f]Aileen[/name_f], it’s Scottish and a bit fresher, plus it has the trendy A initial.

I really dislike it, due to someone I know. She was my “friends” mum, and she was very quirky/odd/unusual. It just gives me bad vibes.

I can only think of the ‘I leen’ jokes I’ve heard. [name_f]Eileen[/name_f] does not sound very pleasing to my ears.

I think it’s still very dated sounding. However, a girl I graduated hs with just named her daughter [name_f]Eileen[/name_f] (an honor name for her) and calls her Eilee, which I thought was absolutely adorable!

I agree that it feels sort of dated. It was nearly my middle name, and it is my sister’s MN ([name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] [name_f]Eileen[/name_f]). I think it has a nice sound, but I’m not terribly fond of the look. I love the sound of [name_f]Aileen[/name_f] (at least, in Irish–ay-leen), though! I’m not massively fond of the spelling, but AY-leen sounds so lyrical and other-worldly to me. I would love to meet an [name_f]Aileen[/name_f]! I guess I might like it so much because I love the Scottish [name_f]Eilidh[/name_f].

I’m not sure about [name_f]Eileen[/name_f]. For me I think I associate it too much with the song, and also can’t help but hear “I Lean”. But I do like the sound of it. Apparently it was #748 in 2013, so someone must like it. I just like [name_f]Aileen[/name_f] a bit more, and even [name_f]Irene[/name_f].

I really really like it! I picture it on a sweet little girl rather than old aunt - and this is probably because I never knew an old [name_f]Eileen[/name_f], only a teenager. I think it’s melodious and rolls off the tongue nicely. I’d love to meet baby [name_f]Eileen[/name_f]

I like it!

[name_u]Love[/name_u] it, and Eilie would be a sweet nickname. With your boys’ names, I like the similarity to Hebrew [name_f]Eliana[/name_f] (probably not considering it for yourself, but still). It also has a lot of the same sounds as the popular Isla, so it seems fresh enough to me. I like it with other light and sweet names: Eileen Flora/Florence, Eileen Marigold, Eileen Isabelle, Eileen Pearl.

I had a friend in high school named [name_f]Eileen[/name_f]. I think it is a very pretty name and dated, yes, but enough so that a little [name_f]Eileen[/name_f] would be a pleasant surprise.

[name_f]Eileen[/name_f] is nice, but was the subject of too many knock knock jokes in my childhood for me to take it too seriously.

I like [name_f]Eileen[/name_f] a lot actually. The only person I know with this name is maybe 35, very sporty and a lot of fun to be around, so I’m not getting this “dated”/great aunt image that some people are talking about. I like the meaning and think it would be a great name to have.
