Eilonwy~ pronunciation?

Does anyone know how to correctly say this? This was the name of the princess in Disney’s The [name_m]Black[/name_m] Cauldron. I’m not considering it for a daughter, by the way. I’m just curious. Although, could you see this being usable?

In the movie, they say it something “a-lon-wee” (hard a). I looked up pronunciation videos and have gotten mixed results. Some pronounce it the same as the movie does. Others say it as “e-lon-wee” (with a hard e, instead of an a) or “a-lon-way”. A comment on one of the videos said that the name is Welsh and that it is pronounced “elon OO Vee.” Nameberry has it as “eye-[name_m]LON[/name_m]-wee.” From what I can tell, it is just a made up name based on Welsh words. Not knowing anything “Welsh”, I just don’t know what is the most correct.

Thanks for any and all guidance given!

It’s invented name… I pronounce it - ay-lon-wee

@desdemona: [name_u]True[/name_u]…that’s what I found when I tried to look it up, anyway. I like the pronunciation you give!

I think Eilonwy is usable. Famous Welsh poet [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] had a daughter called [name_f]Aeronwy[/name_f]. Both beautiful names!

I’ve always said Eilonwy “eh-[name_m]LON[/name_m]-wee”, but I could be wrong!

I don’t care for the sound or spelling of this name. It will forever confuse people, and it will always need to be spelled and/or correcting/confirming the pronounciation. That leaves a lifetime of bitterness about one’s name…trust me.
