Eira

Eira is a name I have been liking a lot lately, it is welsh, which is where I am from and it means snow, something I love and have many happy memories of.
I have some questions

  1. Do you like the name Eira?
  2. If you like it what do you like about it?
  3. If you don’t like it what don’t you like about it?
  4. How would you pronounce it?
  5. Is origin and meaning important to you?

I like [name_f]Eira[/name_f]! [name_u]Bright[/name_u], mystical and magical, with an appealing sound and distinctive look, but not too out there. I would pronounce it Eye-ruh (but I’ve seen Ay-ruh too)

In terms of origin and meaning, origin is important in the sense that if I was naming a real child, I would want to make sure I wasn’t using a name that was inappropriate for me (with my heritage) to use. In regards to meaning, I think a good meaning is a plus, and something interesting to know, rather than massively important.

I really like [name_f]Eira[/name_f] I like that it’s a bit unusual (I’ve never met one) without being really out-there, I think it looks and sounds really pretty and has a magical, “snow on the mountains” vibe. I’d pronounce it eye-rah.

As far as meaning goes, I wouldn’t want to use a name that had a negative meaning e.g. [name_u]Mallory[/name_u], it’s so pretty but the meaning (“unlucky”) sadly puts me off using it. If a name has a good meaning I am more likely to want to use it. “Snow” is a neutral meaning for me, so [name_f]Eira[/name_f] makes my list! :snowflake:

I like the name [name_f]Eira[/name_f] a lot!! I think it combines some currently trendy sounds while still creating a unique name with beautiful imagery.
I would say “EYE-ruh”
Usually, origin and meaning are not super important, but I love the meaning snow for Eira!! It makes the name sparkly and warm to me

  1. Yes!
  2. I like the snow meaning and the fresh, bold sound.
  3. n/a
  4. I say eye-ruh in my head even though I know that’s not quite right for the welsh pronunciation
  5. it can be! it’s not a dealbreaker but i tend to gravitate towards names that honor my culture, and meanings can make me love a name more, but rarely less.
  1. Yes!

  2. I love the meaning and that it’s familiar but not popular. It’s sweet, and simple.

  3. N/A

  4. I only like it as AY-ruh, but I’m aware EYE-ruh is also a legitimate pronunciation.

  5. Yes, I wouldn’t immediately no to a name with a bad meaning, but I do love a good one. Origin is important in deciding whether it would be appropriate using a name. I’m not Welsh, but I am from the UK, so Welsh names aren’t uncommon.

[name_f]My[/name_f] thoughts on Eira…

I really like [name_f]Eira[/name_f] she’s bright, sparkly and has pretty Christmassy imagery, I love the meaning ‘snow’ she’s has a subtle nature vibe which is appealing as well. A lovely name especially as a way to honour your Welsh heritage. I would pronounce her as I ra if that makes sense as I’m terrible at breaking down names phonetically.

For me origin is important in terms that I wouldn’t want to use a name that could be seen as appropriating someone else’s culture for example [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] is Native American therefore inappropriate for me to use. Similarly I wouldn’t name my son [name_m]Mohammed[/name_m] as I do not follow the Muslim faith. However I am not Greek yet have choices like [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] on my list and wouldn’t not use them as they are not reflective of my culture. I wouldn’t specifically just choose names that are Irish/Scottish or Ashkenazi as that’s my cultural background. For me meanings are way more important I wouldn’t want to bestow a name onto my child that had a negative meaning for example [name_u]Rue[/name_u] is sweet but the meaning ‘regret’ isn’t for me.

  1. I love it!
  2. For me it has a fantasy, magical vibe but without being too frilly-princessy. It’s nature-y, a little mysterious, and sounds lovely to say.
  3. n/a
  4. I’d instinctively say AIR-uh
  5. Definitely. I wouldn’t use a name with specific roots or meaning in a culture to which I don’t belong. But meaning matters a lot to me, whether that’s etymological meaning or the name having some personal significance in my own life.
