Eirlys?

We have our halloween baby’s name but I can’t help but keep going back to one particular name -

[name_f]Eirlys[/name_f].

So just out of curiosity. [name_m]How[/name_m] does [name_f]Eirlys[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] sound compared to [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]?

Thanks

Editing to say that Eirlys can be pronounced Ire-liss or Ayer-liss and is a normal name where I’m from in Wales. The pronunciation doesn’t bother us as we like Celtic names.

How do you pronounce it?

This is really hard to pronounce. Usually I reckon Berries are slightly better at tricky names than the average person (if I do say so myself :smiling_imp:) , so if we struggle with it, it’s a good sign she’ll have a really hard time in the big wide world. Especially if she decides to move away from [name_m]Wales[/name_m].

I can’t tell if it’s EAR-liss or IRE-liss.

[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is a magical combination that I absolutely adore. [name_f]Eirlys[/name_f] looks very lettery and clunky (if you get what I mean) next to [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] which has a nice visual flow. [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] suits it better I think.

Where I’m from in [name_m]Wales[/name_m] it’s Ire-liss but other parts of [name_m]Wales[/name_m] pronounce it as Ayer-liss. So either can be used.

I love [name_f]Eirlys[/name_f]! It’s one of my favourite names. [name_f]Eirlys[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is such a wonderful combo! I like [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] too but [name_f]Eirlys[/name_f] is

Ah it’s pretty. It reminds me of [name_f]Isla[/name_f] in that case.

I love [name_f]Eirlys[/name_f]!! Where I am in [name_m]Wales[/name_m] we would pronounce it ayer-liss. I love the meaning of snowdrop and I would seriously love to see a little girl with this name! I know an Eirwen, which I also think is lovely and means [name_u]Snow[/name_u] White, which is another option if you wanted to merge [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] and [name_f]Eirlys[/name_f]. Definitely a great choice, but I think I prefer the flow of [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] than [name_f]Eirlys[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]💕

[name_f]Eirlys[/name_f] is lovely!

I do like [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] but I’m starting to see it discussed everywhere – even away from Nameberry! :open_mouth: I do wonder if it’s about to boom in popularity.

[name_f]Eirlys[/name_f] feels more distinctive, for sure, but also more open to pronunciation problems outside of [name_m]Wales[/name_m].

Eirwen is also a lovely suggestion!

I think my vote is going to [name_f]Eirlys[/name_f] for its delicate sound and more under-the-radar vibe, but [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] is a really great name too.

I think it’s beautiful. I really like the meaning too. I don’t find it hard to pronounce once you’ve explained the pronunciation.

I do think [name_f]Eirlys[/name_f] is much less expected – at least, it is outside of [name_m]Wales[/name_m]. [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] has become quite trendy on NB, which means it could become more popular irl, especially in the UK, I’d imagine. I don’t know if that makes any difference to you at all.

What it really comes down to, of course, is which you really love more. Both flow very well with mn [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]. If you can’t get away from [name_f]Eirlys[/name_f], that makes me wonder if you might regret not using it. So I think I’m leaning toward [name_f]Eirlys[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] for you – such a gorgeous name, btw!

Oh, I love [name_f]Eirlys[/name_f] so much! It’s one of the most beautiful names I can think of, it makes me smile to see someone considering it. I love the meaning and the imagery it gives me, and it goes so perfectly with [name_f]Maeve[/name_f].
However, [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] is one of my absolute favorite names so this is tough! I think [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] sounds magical and whimsical, which I love.

Maybe you could take both names with you and see which one suits her more? You can’t go wrong with either, they’re both gorgeous!!

I’m in the minority, I think, but I personally don’t like [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]. I just don’t love that the stress is on the second syllable. But I quite like [name_f]Eirlys[/name_f]. I don’t think it’s that difficult a name to pronounce, even outside of countries where Celtic names are popular/standard. I use [name_f]Eira[/name_f] as part of a “gamer tag” (for lack of a better word) and no one here has really had a particularly hard time with it (I’m in the US). Usually, they say [name_f]Air[/name_f]-uh instead of Ay-ruh, which is an easy fix and they get it right from then on.

Eirlys is gorgeous. Full of magic!

I love [name_f]Eirlys[/name_f]! Personally I prefer the Ayer-liss pronunciation, but it’s more a case of Welsh speaker and non Welsh speaker to me.

My vote goes to [name_f]Eirlys[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]! What a magical combo. As an American I do think you would run into pronunciation difficulties if you ever moved here (can’t speak for other countries lol but I assume the same) but I think [name_f]Eirlys[/name_f] would still be usable outside of [name_m]Wales[/name_m] because probably 75% of kids I’ve known have had some level of difficulty explaining the spelling or pronunciation of their names. There are just so many creative names used here people are used to clarifying and then it’s usually fine.

My first instinct is to pronounce it [name_f]Air[/name_f]-liss (NYC accent)! It’s such a beautiful name in writing alone, it’s unique and swirly and I absolutely love it. BUT I love [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] too! I think [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] has a little bit smoother flow, but ultimately whatever you choose I think you can’t go wrong.
