I feel it is quite unforgivable that my top three favourite names all begin with El-, [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], [name_f]Elara[/name_f] and [name_f]Elaine[/name_f]. Could any two of these be sisters? Could you think of any middle names for them?
Thank you
i think they are all too close to be sisters, unfortunately. though i personally wouldn’t, you could use one as a fn and one as a mn - like Eloise ____ and ____ Elaine
I was thinking they would be a fun link as middles.
I think they’re kind of sweet as sisters—any combination of them or even all three. It’s matchy, to be sure, could and likely would get confusing at times… but I don’t think it needs to be a dealbreaker if they are your favorites!
I know multiple sets of sisters named Mar!ssa and Mar!ah (way more confusing than [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] I think), a set of Jul!e and Jod!ie, a set of M@ry and M@rgaret… and they get on fine!! I think it works.
I don’t think it’s a problem. [name_m]Just[/name_m] don’t give them all the nn [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]! [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] could be [name_f]Lolo[/name_f], [name_f]Elaine[/name_f], [name_f]Lainey[/name_f], [name_f]Elara[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f] or [name_f]Lara[/name_f]!
I don’t think any combination of these is unusable, but I understand why it’s bothering you! Many siblings share ending sounds but it feels more noticeable when there are similarities at the beginning. I think this is because there are a limited number of common endings for first names, so we don’t notice them much & unconsciously accept that so many names end in N or A etc, and also because initials are given cultural importance. They alphabetise us and are used to identify us in a way that no other letter in our name does!
Here’s some middle ideas. (I started by looking at NB’s most popular names list & trying out names that don’t have Ls and Rs in them. Why avoid Rs? I find them a bit tongue-twistery with Ls) ~
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Ava[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Ada[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Kaia[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Chloe[/name_f]
(I adore [name_f]Elara[/name_f] BTW!)
[name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Chloe[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_f]Aletheia[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_f]Savannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] (love this!)
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
Some thoughts: I found [name_f]Elara[/name_f] the most versatile name to pair with – [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] was the most difficult! A lot of names sounded choppy with [name_f]Elaine[/name_f]. I think she’s got such a prominent N ending that it sounds so final. If you were going to shift one name to the middle spot, I’d suggest this one. She’d be great as a middle!
I personally wouldn’t use them together but [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_f]Elara[/name_f] or [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] could maybe work because the rest of the names are different enough to not get too tongue tied. [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] and [name_f]Elara[/name_f] feel too close since they also have the same third letter, I would expect those to get more mixed up.
@EdgeOfTheMeadow- Thank you so much! I am adoring [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] and [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f].
Thank you so much everyone
I don’t see it being a problem honestly I know plenty of siblings with matchy names (so many siblings named [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] and Martin/ [name_m]Mattias[/name_m], [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] and [name_m]Justin[/name_m], [name_f]Catharina[/name_f] and [name_f]Christina[/name_f], [name_u]Maria[/name_u] and [name_f]Marta[/name_f] etc). I think these names work very well together
They do look a bit matchy, but I pronounce the first syllable of all of them differently so I wouldn’t necessarily rule them out as sisters if you can’t find any other names you like.
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f]: ELL-oh-weez
[name_f]Elara[/name_f]: EE-lar-uh (though I could see this becoming uh-LAR-uh too)
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f]: uh-LANE
They would be matchy as sisters but I’ve met plenty of matchy sets and since they all have distinctive and different endings, I don’t think they’re unusable. It might be nice to use one as a first, another as a middle too?
Some middles:
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Niamh[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_f]Heidi[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_u]Ivy[/name_u]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_u]Fern[/name_u]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Faye[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_u]Piper[/name_u]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_u]Finley[/name_u]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_u]Winter[/name_u]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_u]Sasha[/name_u]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_f]Carys[/name_f]
I think they’re to close to be sisters! They all sound very similar and are spelled very similar. I think you could possibly use one as a first name and one as a middle name for another baby if you really wanted to.
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u], [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_u]Ivy[/name_u], [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Nicole[/name_f], [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Brielle[/name_f]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_u]Cove[/name_u], [name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_u]River[/name_u], [name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_f]Opal[/name_f], [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] [name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_f]Elara[/name_f] or [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] are distinct enough in sound to pass as siblings, I think! I pronounce them as El-oh-weeze and EE-lara, and El-oh-weeze and EE-lane, so there’s a difference in the starting sounds that helps distinguish them.
I’d avoided the [name_f]El[/name_f] nicknames and maybe go for [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] nn [name_u]Lou[/name_u], [name_f]Elara[/name_f] nn [name_u]Ara[/name_u], and [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lainey[/name_f]. Having distinct nicknames definitely helps as well!
I say these the same way you do. Their pronunciation is quite different but if people say it differently, they could sound really similar!
I can see [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_f]Elara[/name_f] as sisters, [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] feels far more dated than the other two for me.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] at the moment is
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Emma[/name_f] [name_u]Sky[/name_u]
