[name]Both[/name] names are prominent in pop culture: [name]Selena[/name] Gomez and [name]Elena[/name] [name]Gilbert[/name] from The Vampire Diaries. And are only a letter different.
Which do you prefer? [name]Do[/name] you think the names are very tied to their pop counterparts?
This might be because I’m old, but I’ve never heard of [name]Selena[/name] Gomez and I’ve never seen The Vampire Diaries. So for me they’re not tied to those people at all. [name]Elena[/name] is for me a very Russian name, there are plenty on my family tree. [name]Selena[/name] makes me think of [name]Selena[/name] Quintanilla-Pérez (again, I’m old…), and the moon goddess [name]Selene[/name]. I think I like [name]Selena[/name] a little bit better, [name]Elena[/name] always sounded whiny to me. I prefer (non optional) [name]Alena[/name], [name]Selene[/name] or [name]Serena[/name] though.
I definitely prefer [name]Selena[/name]! No contest for me. I don’t directly associate [name]Selena[/name] with [name]Selena[/name] Gomez because I knew about the name before she was famous. She definitely crosses my mind though. I mostly think about the moon and how pretty and whimsical I think the name is.
I don’t associate [name]Elena[/name] with the VDs at all. I knew plenty of people named [name]Elena[/name] before the show existed.
I think [name]Selena[/name] is associated with [name]Selena[/name] Gomez more than [name]Elena[/name] is with the VDs. Not to the point where it’s unusable though.
Interesting! Thanks for your replies. I too am preferring [name]Selena[/name] to [name]Elena[/name], and I’m starting to find [name]Elena[/name] to be whiny. I also love the description of whimsy for [name]Selena[/name]! I agree it is.
[name]Celina[/name] is my middle name, so I prefer [name]Selena[/name] over [name]Elena[/name]. I do like [name]Elena[/name] though. Personally, I think they are very usable and not too strongly associated with Gomez and TVD to cause any issues. The name [name]Selena[/name] (when spelled like that) also reminds me of the singer who was murdered.
My only issue with both of these names is that I hate the way most people pronounce them. [name]Both[/name] [name]Selena[/name] Gomez and [name]Selena[/name] Quintanilla get called seh-lee-na. Arrrrrrg. [name]Both[/name] girls are Latinas. It should be seh-LEH-na. Same with [name]Elena[/name]. I prefer Eh-LEH-na. But most people say Eh-lay-na.
That said, I don’t like [name]Selena[/name] because of the association with both ladies. At least in the US Latino world [name]Selena[/name] is very much associated with the murdered singer. [name]Elena[/name] is a far better choice for me.
I think their both great. I think [name]Selena[/name] is pretty tied to both of the mentioned stars but not to the point its unusable. I have no idea who you are referring to with [name]Elena[/name]. I don’t watch the show but I watch other shows on that network and would have never been able to tell you her name. Vampires seem so trendy to me that I’m sure that show is on its way out or won’t make it much longer so I doubt anyone would really make the connection. I think every persons associations with names are different. Personally, I love [name]Dallas[/name] the tv show so I think of the [name]Elena[/name] on that show before anyone else but that’s just me.
The show is doing quite well, they have a fifth season coming up. It could take the route of Supernatural and last for 10 seasons, I don’t think so though. I think it’ll have maybe a 6th like Gossip Girl.
But less people than I thought would be aware of the reference.
I think they’re pretty equal for me. Not my personal style, but both are attractive options. I do know the pop culture references, but I don’t think they’re such strong associations that they color the names for me.
[name]Elena[/name] is head and shoulders above [name]Selena[/name], in my opinion. I don’t associate either name with anyone. And I didn’t even know there was an [name]Elena[/name] on [name]Dallas[/name]. LOL
Although, both [name]Elena[/name] and [name]Selena[/name] might be good but [name]Selena[/name] is much better than [name]Elena[/name] as per my point of view. [name]Selena[/name] is new and different, all members of your home will surely like this name.
I don’t know who either of those people are, so no ties there for me. [name]Selena[/name] is the name of a friend’s mom, so I think of her when I hear it. [name]Elena[/name] is the name of one of my daughter’s classmates. I think both are pretty.
I prefer [name]Selena[/name] because I know a lovely [name]German[/name] girl with that name. [name]Elena[/name] is pretty but one of many [name]El[/name]… names
I love the name [name]Selena[/name] and considered it for my 2nd daughter. [name]Elena[/name] is nice too, and I know a 7 year old girl by that name, but I prefer [name]Selena[/name].
I am not in love with either, unfortunately. I agree that [name]Elena[/name] is a bit whiny, if you are pronouncing it the same I prefer the spelling [name]Alayna[/name]. [name]Selena[/name] is directly associated with [name]Selena[/name] Gomez for me, sadly. If I were to choose one I would choose [name]Selena[/name] with the nn [name]Lena[/name].
I definitely like [name]Elena[/name] better in general. Also, when I hear [name]Selena[/name], I always think [name]Selena[/name] Gomez, but I don’t think of a specific person with [name]Elena[/name].
