Eleni?

[name]Hi[/name] all, just wondering what everyone thought about the name [name]Eleni[/name] (pronounced [name]El[/name]-ay-nee). I really like the name, but it doesn’t look finished to me. I know the traditional spelling is [name]Eleni[/name], but would it be absolutely horrible to add an e to make it [name]Elenie[/name]? That looks like a complete name to me. Without the e it feeling reminiscent of [name]Lexi[/name] or [name]Ali[/name], which are both simply nicknames to me. What do you think?

[name]LOVE[/name] [name]Eleni[/name]. It’s on my short list. However, it’s pronounced eh-[name]LEN[/name]-ee, not eh-[name]LAY[/name]-nee, though. When transcribed from Greek characters into the ones used for English, it is transcribed to E-L-E-N-I. (The exact Greek characters are epsilon-lambda-epsilon-nu-eta, which are the “eh” “ll” “eh” “nn” “ee” sounds in Greek, always.) There is an accent used for certain epsilon characters that indicates (or this is what people have said, anyway) the “H” sound–that’s where the [name]Helen[/name]/[name]Helena[/name] variant of the Greek [name]Eleni[/name] comes from. I’ve also heard that [name]Elene[/name] (pronounced the same way, eh-[name]LEN[/name]-ee) is also an acceptable spelling. I studied ancient Greek for a year, so I know a little bit (admittedly, I’m not a Greek genius!) about the Greek language.

Technically, since it comes from the Greek characters, I suppose you could spell it [name]Elenie[/name], but it looks much more cutesy to me than both [name]Eleni[/name] or [name]Elene[/name].

I think it’d be safer (and more respectable) to stick to the original spelling, but I’m hoping @dantea (who has a whole wealth of wonderful Greek knowledge!) will reply–she’s much more knowledgeable than me.

Good luck!

I love [name]Eleni[/name] (pronounced Ee-leh-nee), especially with this spelling. It looks complete with out the extra e. I agree with @ashthedreamer that the e makes it cutesy.
[name]Hope[/name] this helps!
