Elimination Thread: Lads

Hello lovelies,
I’m Vix, I used to be an active member (@mclevine) but I have been lurking around since my daughter’s birth. However, my hubby and I are planning to start TTC soon, and it got us both back into naming.
We’re huge geeks - history, literature, music, mythology, [name_m]Monty[/name_m] Python, you get the idea. Our daughter is called [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] and we want to find a name as beautiful as hers for our future little one.
I really need your help narrowing down our list. It’s pretty long, but we’re still open to suggestions if you have any. Bonus points if it is connected to music (hubby is a musician) or works in Russian/Ukrainian.
Hyperion
Delwyn
Hephaistion
[name_m]Emrys[/name_m]/[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]
Oleander
Galahad
[name_m]Perseus[/name_m]/[name_m]Percival[/name_m]
Glendower
[name_u]Auberon[/name_u]/[name_u]Oberon[/name_u]
[name_m]Balthazar[/name_m]
Faramir
Nightingale
Siderion
Rosencrantz
Gwydion
[name_m]Endymion[/name_m]
[name_m]Orpheus[/name_m]
Bedivere
Apollon
[name_m]Evander[/name_m]
[name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f]
Astraeus (would rule out [name_f]Astraea[/name_f])

You can divide our names into likes and dislikes, rank, comment, eliminate - anything goes. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] you can work your berry magic! (And there is a girls version, too!)

Names I really like:
[name_m]Evander[/name_m], Oleander (though i like just [name_m]Leander[/name_m] a little more), [name_m]Percival[/name_m] and [name_m]Perseus[/name_m]

Names I like but would only consider for a middle:
[name_u]Oberon[/name_u], Hyperion, Nightingale, [name_m]Emrys[/name_m]

Names I dislike:
[name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], Gwydion, Hephaiston

With [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f], I really like [name_m]Perseus[/name_m], [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m], Oleander, Apollon and [name_m]Evander[/name_m].

I would eliminate Glendower, Rosencrantz, Hyperion, Delwyn, Hephaistion and Gwydion.

I really like Nightingale, Galahad and Faramir but only as middles.

Likes: [name_m]Perseus[/name_m], [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], [name_u]Oberon[/name_u], Faramir, Apollon, and [name_m]Evander[/name_m].

Dislike: Oleander, Glendower, Nightingale, Rosencrantz, Gwydion, & [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f].

While I would like both Nightingale and [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] as middles, I prefer them both on girls

I love Oleander, please please use it!! [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m], Gwydion, [name_m]Endymion[/name_m] and [name_m]Evander[/name_m] are all so so fantastic too, tho! No wonder its hard to choose.
Nightingale, [name_u]Oberon[/name_u], Faramir, Apollon, [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] and Astraeus are pretty awesome too. I personally wouldn’t use some of them as first names for a variety of reasons. Or that was my first thought. Looking them over again Nightingale and Astraeus pop out at me. I love the bird association and the night word in the name Nightingale. I love the potential of nns [name_m]Night[/name_m] or [name_u]Gale[/name_u]. Astraeus seems so heavy and big at first, not sure exactly how to describe what I mean. But I do love all the [name_f]Astra[/name_f]-/star sort of names, so I’m sucked into it. Plus I like the -rae- sound in there, and wonder if [name_u]Rae[/name_u] would make a lovely and more accessible nickname for Astraeus. I do think I prefer the male Astraeus to the female [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]. That’s a tough call tho!
[name_u]Oberon[/name_u] also seems very usable, I like the nn [name_m]Bear[/name_m].
[name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] would be marvellous in the middle.
Faramir and Apollon I prefer in the middle, mainly due to their sound/similarity to word or words and their lack of good nicknames that I can see offhand.

I would definitely take out Hyperion. All I see/hear is the word hyper. And Hephaistion. It looks and sounds quite ugly to me. And I keep hearing “face” in there, unless I’m pronouncing it wrong. And Rosencrantz, again just ugly. The last syllable sort of ruins it for me. Sorry. And last of all Bedivere, the first syllable of bed is just too much for me. Maybe usable in the middle. Glendower almost makes the cutout list for me too. I don’t have particular reasoning for that one tho, I just don’t like it.

A couple suggestions yet.

Aww, replies! Thank you, ladies (and gentlemen?), you are the best!

greyblue; we like [name_m]Leander[/name_m] but it’s a bit bland for my taste, plus you can get it from Oleander. Oleander is just so charming and makes me think of the beautiful shrub.

[name_f]Belle[/name_f]; hey, I remember you! I get that nobody likes Rosencrantz, which is a shame. It’s just that I’m a sucker for rose/[name_f]Rose[/name_f] names on boys! I see what you mean about Galahad but I think he’s a keeper - makes me think of young and yummy [name_u]Michael[/name_u] [name_u]Palin[/name_u] in [name_m]Monty[/name_m] Python and the Holy Grail.

lonestar; I was actually expecting this sort of reaction to Nightingale and [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] on a boy. But in Greek mythology, [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] was a man, and Nightingale just seems unisex to me, so I thought they could work. But thanks anyway!

adelina; I’m actually worried that [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m] is too perfect with [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f], if you know what I mean? It just seems like such an obvious, natural brother. I don’t know…

columbiacharm; Ooh, I love long replies! I love Oleander too, but I don’t want people to call him [name_u]Ollie[/name_u], you know? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it can be avoided? My nickname of choice would probably be [name_m]Leander[/name_m] or Ender. Funnily enough, I think I slightly prefer [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] to Astraeus, but it’s not going away. I think it would make a nice middle. [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] and Astraeus.
And whoa, you think Hephaistion is ugly? You should watch [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]. I promise you’ll change your mind. And it’s more “fees” than “face”, at least in my accent. I have to disagree with you, Rosencrantz is so fun to say and it means “rosary” - I think it’s wonderful. Thanks for your honesty, though, that’s something to keep in mind. I like [name_m]Cosmo[/name_m], [name_m]Crispin[/name_m], [name_m]Hamish[/name_m] and Hesiod; I also like [name_m]Pyramus[/name_m] but I think I prefer [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f], and [name_m]Valerian[/name_m] makes me think of the unfashionable Valeriy. [name_m]Isidor[/name_m]/[name_m]Isidore[/name_m] is already on the list, and I believe we might consider [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m]. Thanks again!

@thefairophelia [name_f]Glad[/name_f] you didn’t mind the long reply! I hope I didn’t come across too harsh… It was late at night and I was in a rush but I just had to reply! I normally think of myself as quite openminded and I try to word things kindly but once in awhile I guess I’m not openminded enough :).
I do think that it’s likely Oleander would get called [name_u]Ollie[/name_u]. I mean it’s right there at the beginning of the name, and people who are either too lazy or unsure about the whole name might just default to that. I do think tho that while he’s young you could introduce him as Oleander-and-we-call-him-Ender, and then the people you regularly associate him would call him your preferred nickname at least. But once he gets older it would be out of your control and up to him/his peers.
I’ve never seen [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]. I could see where Hephaistion shares some similar sounds to [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], so maybe it’s not as far out as I think.
And I happen to like [name_f]Rose[/name_f] names for boys too. [name_u]Penrose[/name_u] is my favourite. It’s just the -crantz part I don’t like in Rosencrantz!
Anyway, you’re welcome and good luck! I may suddenly be back if I find some more fun suggestions :).

These are my faves from your list!

[name_m]Emrys[/name_m]
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]
Oleander (a little feminine to me though)
Galahad (nn [name_u]Gal[/name_u]! Cute! #3 fave)
[name_u]Auberon[/name_u]/[name_u]Oberon[/name_u] (#1 fave)
[name_m]Balthazar[/name_m]
Faramir
Nightingale (I would use as a middle)
[name_m]Endymion[/name_m] (nn Endy! #2 fave)
Apollon

Good luck!

Hyperion: Isn’t there a publisher by this name?
Oleander: Nice!
Galahad: Big name to live up to
[name_m]Perseus[/name_m]/[name_m]Percival[/name_m]: I like the nn [name_u]Percy[/name_u] with these
[name_m]Orpheus[/name_m]: Reminds me of [name_m]Morpheus[/name_m] from the matrix
Bedivere: Reminds me of Mr. [name_m]Belvidere[/name_m]
Apollon: Maybe just [name_m]Apollo[/name_m]? somehow with the added n I don’t know how to say it anymore.
[name_m]Evander[/name_m]: Nice

Thank you all!

columbia (reminds me of [name_m]Rocky[/name_m] Horror! ;)); no, I don’t mind long replies at all! The longer the better. No, that’s okay, don’t worry! I would not have posted if I wasn’t looking for honest opinions. Well, I don’t hate [name_u]Ollie[/name_u], but it’s a bit too bland for my taste and too close to [name_u]Nelly[/name_u], too. I guess we will see. And I’m totally looking forward to your suggestions if you come up with any!

mt_mama; thanks! So nice to meet another Galahad lover! I adore him.

faycosta; you’re right, there is a publisher by this name. It actually published [name_u]Percy[/name_u] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m]…[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it ruins the name? We love [name_u]Percy[/name_u] for [name_m]Perseus[/name_m]/[name_m]Percival[/name_m], and well, Apollon is the Russian version of [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], and I think it sounds more complete.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] coming back to say that Oleander and Galahad have grown on me since I commented before. I like them a lot.
Somes names they reminded me of: [name_m]Gamaliel[/name_m] and [name_m]Caradoc[/name_m]

Like - Hyperion, [name_m]Perseus[/name_m], [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m], [name_u]Auberon[/name_u]/[name_u]Oberon[/name_u] and [name_m]Evander[/name_m]

Dislike - Galahad, Glendower, Faramir, Bedivere and Gwydir

Suggestions - [name_m]Ephraim[/name_m], [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m], [name_m]Lysander[/name_m], [name_m]Magnus[/name_m], [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m], [name_m]Ignatius[/name_m], [name_m]Valentin[/name_m]

Favourites:
[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] and [name_u]Oberon[/name_u]
[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] and [name_m]Ephraim[/name_m]
[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] and Hyperion

Hyperion - This sounds really cool, the ‘hyper’ part gets me a little, but overall I like it
Delwyn - I really think this could work, it sounds different but also seems like it wouldn’t cause issues, also sounds nice with [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f].
Hephaistion - A bit of a mouthful, I love the idea of it, but I feel the everyday use would be a bit much.
[name_m]Emrys[/name_m]/[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] - [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] them. I wish my husband did as well, but he vetoed them because of the ‘em’ being to girly, and the fact that [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] has the word ‘bro’ in it. I say he is ridiculous and they are both fantastic.
Oleander - I’m not really sure if I’m pronouncing it correctly or not, but my mouth keeps elongating the O, and it just makes me think of [name_m]Leander[/name_m], but Oleander does sound so much cooler than just [name_m]Leander[/name_m].
Galahad - This is awesome. I love it.
[name_m]Perseus[/name_m]/[name_m]Percival[/name_m] - Personally, I prefer [name_m]Percival[/name_m] and would use it in a heartbeat if my husband would let me. [name_m]Perseus[/name_m] is awesome too, I just prefer the sound of [name_m]Percival[/name_m]. [name_u]Percy[/name_u] is super cute for a nickname.
Glendower - Have not heard this one before! I’m not sure how I feel about it yet, but I feel like it can easily grow on people.
[name_u]Auberon[/name_u]/[name_u]Oberon[/name_u] - [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] is my fav. [name_u]Love[/name_u] them both though, but [name_m]Obie[/name_m] is such a cute nickname.
[name_m]Balthazar[/name_m] - I love it, but I don’t think most others will.
Faramir - Awesome. Cant think of any nicknames off the top of my head, but it sounds cool.
Nightingale - Honestly, I think its a girl name. But it would make a great middle name!
Siderion - not that crazy about it, mostly because of the nickname [name_m]Sid[/name_m]
Rosencrantz - Awesome. [name_u]Love[/name_u] it. Not sure how well it would go over.
Gwydion - Ph man, this used to be one of my favorites. But now I feel like it sounds too close to Gideion and Im afraid people will get them mixed up and Gwydion is just so much better (and has a much more interesting backstory)
[name_m]Endymion[/name_m] - Interesting, but not my favorite.
[name_m]Orpheus[/name_m] - [name_u]Love[/name_u]! Though I have always loved [name_m]Morpheus[/name_m] as well (because being named sfter a god of dreams sounds fantastic) but my family cant get over the whole morphine thing…so [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m] might be a better route.
Bedivere - I prefer [name_m]Percival[/name_m] and Galahad.
Apollon - I prefer [name_m]Apollo[/name_m].
[name_m]Evander[/name_m] - It doesnt have as much spice as the other names.
[name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] - Ooh, this is nice. I might go more for a middle, but it sounds great!
Astraeus - This is really cool, but I do like [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] better.

Okay, so I love your list. It is so hard to pick my favorites! But with [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f], I feel that Delwyn, [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], [name_m]Percival[/name_m], and [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] would be the best match.

While I don’t typically like the more unusual names, I actually love so many of the names on your list. This is a great list - I even read some aloud to my husband.

[name_m]Emrys[/name_m], Oleander, Galahad, [name_m]Perseus[/name_m]/[name_m]Percival[/name_m], Faramir, [name_m]Endymion[/name_m], [name_m]Evander[/name_m], and [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] are my favorites.

I’m especially happy to see Faramir and [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] listed - [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] is the name of a character from a book I love, and so I have no problem seeing it on a boy.

My favorites are Galahad, [name_m]Endymion[/name_m], [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] and [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m]. I think any of them would go well with [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f].

I also [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] and [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m]!
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] and [name_m]Percival[/name_m] are also very nice.

Thanks, ladies!

greyblue; I actually like [name_m]Gamaliel[/name_m]! [name_m]Will[/name_m] have to run it by hubby, though. And I’m glad you like Oleander and Galahad!

[name_f]Heather[/name_f]; thanks a lot! I’m happy you like our list. And we have nickname options for most names - [name_m]Smitty[/name_m], Tio and Heffy for Hephaistion, [name_u]Percy[/name_u] for [name_m]Perseus[/name_m], [name_m]Buzz[/name_m] for [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m], [name_u]Remy[/name_u] for Faramir and [name_u]Syd[/name_u] for Siderion - SO loves it because he’s crazy about [name_f]Pink[/name_f] [name_m]Floyd[/name_m]. I actually looove the idea of [name_m]Obie[/name_m]/[name_m]Obi[/name_m] for [name_u]Oberon[/name_u], thank you for suggesting it! It’s very cheerful and [name_f]Star[/name_f] Wars, I’m sure hubby will love it, too! By the way, I really like the names in your siggy!

ccmrath; thanks, that’s so nice to know! Which names did you read aloud and did your husband like them? And I’m so glad I’m not the only one who likes [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] for a boy! What book is it, by the way?

My favorites are [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] & [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m].

Thank you!
