I just came across this name by happenstance, and love the pronunciation (“Ay-[name]Lin[/name]”). I think it’s so pretty, yet hesitate as the spelling reminds me of the name ‘[name]Erin[/name]’ a bit (not my favorite name). Also, the first time I saw it, I thought “EE-lin” right away.
I suppose Aelin could be an alternate spelling, but it looks like it’s trying to hard (if you get what I mean there, haha).
Thoughts?
I only know the name because of [name]Elin[/name] Nordegren, and truthfully I never knew how to pronounce the name… [name]Ellen[/name]? Ee-lin? I think it’s pretty but would cause a lot of pronunciation problems unfortunately.
I immediately think of Mrs. [name]Tiger[/name] Woods and all that controversy. I’ve always heard it pronounced EE-lin. I think it’s a pretty sound but awkward for Americans. We look at it and don’t know how to say it.
It looks like ‘EE-lin’ to me, too, but I found the pronunciation here: Elin pronunciation: How to pronounce Elin in Swedish, Welsh, Norwegian, Finnish, Faroese, Danish, Spanish, Dutch
missusaytch, I agree that it is most likely the cultural gap that snags us (as with so many other lovely names!).
I love it. Most people I know would pronounce it ee-lin. I had always assumed that (thanks to Mrs. [name]Tiger[/name] Woods), but my daughter has an [name]Elin[/name] in her preschool class and she pronounces it more like [name]Ellen[/name]. Her mother is from [name]Sweden[/name], so I trust that it is the correct pronunciation. They have a cute sibset, by the way…4 girls named [name]Liv[/name], [name]Greta[/name] or [name]Gretel[/name] (not sure which), [name]Elin[/name] and [name]Marit[/name].
I actually know two Elins and both are Scandanavian (Icelandic and Swedish). [name]One[/name] pronounces her name “[name]Ellen[/name]”- the anglicized version. The other says “Ee-len”
I’m from Denmark and I pronounce it E-lin with the E pronounced as in electric. [name]Lin[/name] as in [name]Linda[/name]
