Hi there! I’m still hunting for girl names that I like, and I was wondering what everyone’s opinion is of the name Elin?
My great grandparents were Norwegian, which is what led me to the name. I pronounce it EE-lin, but with my accent it sounds like AY-lin (which I’m fine with). From what I’ve seen, Aylin is Turkish, and I like it a lot but I have no ties to it - just maybe less pronunciation issues.
How do you pronounce Elin?
Should I just go with an alternative spelling/use Aylin, or could Elin be used without everyone saying Ellen?
Aylin would be pronounced eye-lin in Turkish – it’s a different name from Aylin pronounced ay-lin, so I don’t think you not having a connection to Turkey matters. To be honest, I think Aylin pronounced ay-lin has a generic enough sound that I’d assume it’s just a modern made-up name along the lines of Gracelyn, and it could definitely work!
I think if you want to pronounce it ay-lin, I’d go for the more intuitive Aylin spelling over Elin! Elin doesn’t make sense to me as an honour name for Norwegian heritage anyway, considering that in Norway it’s pronounced eh-lin, not ee-lin or ay-lin, so you might as well go for the spelling that’s less likely to get mispronounced!
If you’re in the States, I’d imagine the default would be [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] or mayyyybe Eh-Leen in a few cases. To get EE-lin you’d probably neeed Eelin and to get Ay-lin you’d probably need to go with [name_f]Aylin[/name_f] or [name_f]Eylin[/name_f] or [name_f]Eilin[/name_f]
I’d say [name_f]Elin[/name_f] as EH-lin - the ones I’ve met have said it as such, and the ‘lin’ sounds different to ‘len’ in my accent so it sounds similar but not the same as [name_f]Ellen[/name_f]. I’d go with the [name_f]Elin[/name_f] spelling if I were you and just use the pronunciation that’s natural in you’re accent
On [name_f]Aylin[/name_f], I’d second this:
[name_f]Aylin[/name_f] is also used as a variation of [name_f]Eileen[/name_f] or [name_f]Aileen[/name_f] and they can be connected to [name_f]Helen[/name_f] and thereby [name_f]Elin[/name_f].
[name_f]Elin[/name_f] is very interesting! I don’t love it, but have always been intrigued by it. I have closer ties to [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] than [name_f]Elin[/name_f], but I instinctively say [name_f]Elin[/name_f] the way you do (although it is strongly EE-lin and not AY-lin with my accent).
I think it depends on how willing to correct pronunciations - it appears like I am the outlier given the other responses to this thread so far. It is an interesting and lovely name, though, and I would be happy to meet an [name_f]Elin[/name_f]!
I just assumed it was an attempt at a different spelling for [name_f]Ellen[/name_f].
I’m from NZ.
But I mean, once people know they know and should pronounce it right? It’s not hard to pronounce, just hard to realise how to pronounce it when you first see it.
Thank you everyone for your insight! I was intrigued by the name, but at this point I think I’m just going to cross it off the list.
I struggle finding girl names that I really like, none seem to stick with me the way boy names do I’m definitely crossing my fingers we have a boy, then I won’t have to worry about it haha
