I was watching the children’s channels with my little cousin and the birthdays’ of all the children today came up with their names and ages and this one caught my eye. I was wondering if this was someone trying to make a girl spelling for [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] or just adding an Ette to the end of [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] so make it sounds a little less like a nickname and more like a full name. What do yous’ thing about it?
Noooooooooooooooooooooo!!!
[name_u]Elliot[/name_u]/[name_u]Elliott[/name_u] is completely masculine (hello, [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] Stabler!) and changing the spelling to make it more feminine makes my eyes burn. I think they were changing the spelling to make it more feminine, not adding letters to [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].
Elliette is a legitimate [name_m]French[/name_m] diminution of names beginning with ‘el’ so though I am usually against masculine names for girls, this one doesn’t bother me, I would put it in the same category as Miette, Alette, Anette etc.
Éliette (with one “l”) is THE legitimate [name_m]French[/name_m] spelling but I don’t think it has anything to do with the male name of [name_u]Elliott[/name_u]. Some sites give it as a variant of [name_f]Eliana[/name_f] ([name_m]French[/name_m] spelling is Éliane). It certainly isn’t pronounced the same in [name_m]French[/name_m] (ay-lee-ETTE). However, since [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] and its numerous spellings seem to be all the rage for girls in [name_u]America[/name_u], it may well have been a way for the parents to “feminize” the name. It’s ok but I wish they would’ve have spelled it correctly.
Yeah, not a fan.
When I hear Elliette, I believe this is pronounced similar to [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]! I <3 it!!
I think it is adorable, reminds me of [name_f]Juliette[/name_f].
I’ll think it’s between [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] and [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]. Not a fan, sorry.
This. [name_f]Eliette[/name_f] is fine (although I hate that it gives parents the excuse to use [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]–I don’t see the appeal on girls at all!), but it’s not my favorite [name_m]French[/name_m] name, and I hate the [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] rage for girls. ![]()
This. It has a different sound to [name_u]Elliot/name_u when I say it. Elliette is [name_f]El[/name_f]-EE-ette whereas [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is [name_f]El[/name_f]-EE-ot.
I dislike it.
I only like a couple [name_f]El[/name_f]-names for girls and that is not one.
I also generally hate -ette names (sorry, [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]/[name_f]Suzette[/name_f]/Miette, etc. just don’t appeal) and believe me, tying an [name_f]El[/name_f]- name to an -ette suffix is basically my Kryptonite.
I wouldn’t use this name for the very reason you cited, it sounds made up. Also when pronounced it would have the majority of people thinking that the name was [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] which is unnecessary confusion.
There are great french names that have the cute “ette” ending if you like that.
The alternate name that came to mind is actually Spanish: [name_u]Elia[/name_u] (pronounced with a long A sound at the beginning)
