I love the name [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] for a girl, but so many people tell me that it’s a boy name.
Some more feminine ways of spelling it are [name_u]Eliot[/name_u], Elyat, Elliotte
What do you think, Boy or Girl?
Quite obviously and frankly, it’s male.
[name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is a boy name, obviously. It comes from [name_m]Eli[/name_m] and [name_m]Eli[/name_m] (the prophet) was a man. Would you call your girl [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]?
I don’t understand why people want to change the gender… I like unisex names, but Elliot is definitely not an unisex name.
Elliette (or [name_f]Eliette[/name_f], the [name_m]French[/name_m] spelling) is a name for a girl. It comes from Elisabeth. I would go for this.
In my opinion, the name is observably transitioning to unisex. I don’t have a problem with that because I love unisex names.
The only downside to a unisex name (like [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]) is that you never know if it’s going to shift away from unisex to a specific gender over time. For example, [name_u]Noah[/name_u] was a boy’s name, then it was unisex/girl’s name (I knew three girl [name_u]Noah[/name_u]'s and two boy Noahs in the 90s), now statistically it’s more a boy’s name again. [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] is shifting, I think, to girl name currently. [name_u]Lindsey[/name_u] is mostly a girls name now but it used to be a boy’s name only. [name_u]Marion[/name_u], too.
I predict [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] will become more of a girl’s name over time. But right now you may get some flack for naming a girl [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]. I think it’s fine & you are probably just ahead of the curve.
[name_u]Eliot[/name_u] is one of my guilty pleasures for a girl, but I still would assume boy if I saw it. The nickname [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] is very trendy for girls though, which might help make [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] seem a little more feminine.
Yes, this.
[name_m]Even[/name_m] before [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]/[name_u]Eliot[/name_u] being used more for a girls name I always thought it was very feminine in sound. Yes, it does have [name_m]Eli[/name_m] right in it, but is said like [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] not ee-lie. The look of [name_u]Eliot[/name_u]/[name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is masculine to me. I love [name_u]Eliot[/name_u]/[name_u]Elliot[/name_u] on both a guy and girl. Slightly more for a girl. I have seen Elliette as an alternate spelling and much prefer that for a girl.
I completely agree with everything you said. ![]()
[name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is one of the female leads in the TV show ‘Scrubs’ and I think she wears it quite well. Boys’ names transition to unisex and feminine all the time, even classic ones like [name_u]James[/name_u] as we’re seeing a lot currently. If you like it, go for it. If you’re worried it’s too boyish, the above Elliette suggestion isn’t bad, but you (and your daughter) would be spelling it constantly if you chose that option.
It will always be a boy’s name in my opinion. I’m growing to love Elliette for a girl though.
It’s a boy’s name. It’s a gorgeous, handsome BOYS name! Frankly, I think it’s a bit ridiculous on a girl.
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u] is masculine. [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is misspelled. Elliette is feminine, but seems made up.
You’ve answered your own question. If you have to change a name to “make it feminine” then obviously you see it as masculine. Have you ever heard of anyone changing the spelling of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] to make it feminine? Or change [name_m]Edward[/name_m] to make it masculine?
[name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is a man’s name. If you want your daughter to have a man’s name then fine.
Completely agree!
Also, [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] on Scrubs was named so because her father wanted a son. It’s no different than wanting a daughter but having a son and naming him [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] anyways.
I only know boys called [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]. I live in [name_f]England[/name_f] where I’ve NEVER seen it on a girl and could never imagine a girl called the name. It’s all masculine for me, sorry.
Exactly! Unfortunately I think it still helped spur on the trend of [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] for girls ![]()
This is a boy’s name. And honestly, I’m not one of the stubborn, dig-my-heels-into-the-ground people about unisex names. [name_u]Avery[/name_u] has gone to the girls, [name_u]Riley[/name_u] is unisex, etc., I get it. But this is a boy’s name that ends in a trendy “-ette” sound, so people are using it on girls now. Maybe I am sore about it because it’s on my boys list and I’ve always loved it. But I do think naming a girl this comes off as very trendy.
I don’t understand why, with all the beautiful girls names in the world, people think it cool to give their daughters a male name. It’s like saying you wish you had a boy or you don’t want your girl to act like a girl.
I love [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] (this spelling as well) for a girl! I know its usually a boy name as well, but I really enjoy it for a girl. I have a friend who has already planned if she has a girl her name will be [name_u]Elliot[/name_u].
If you really love it for a girl, go for it! Her nn could be [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], which is more feminine.
Booooyyy. I don’t like it for girls at all.
I like the name [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] for a girl. You could call her [name_f]Elle[/name_f] or [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] if you wanted a nickname. I prefer it on a girl, actually. I don’t think that naming a girl [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] would make her think you’d rather have a boy.
