Elodie: It true meaning?

Since [name]Elodie[/name] is the name that tops my very short and uncertain list at the moment b/c of the way it sounds, I decided to see what it means.

On this site it says it means “marsh flower”, but when I googled it and looked on other sites, it says it means “wealth”, “foreign riches”, “prosperity”…etc. along those lines.

So what is its true meaning? Is the nameberry site wrong?

Also any suggestions for a good mn? All ive thought of so far is [name]Kate[/name] or [name]Brielle[/name] (possibly too much “el”?)

I have never seen a French site that said marsh flower, most say propriété héréditaire which is more inline with wealth, possession, etc…

Edited to say: I take it back! I looked into it more and found a site that says it comes from 2 sources the greek word Elodie which means “flower of the field” or the latin Alodie which means “free land”. Another site says “fragile flower” Im not sure about the marsh thing but maybe this is an either/or name?

From the wikipedia.fr: “Elodie is a name which means “wild flower” in Greek and “property” in Latin. There is also another form of the name with Alodie or Elody . In France , this name is celebrated on October 22”

I think [name]Elodie[/name] [name]Kate[/name] is lovely! [name]Brielle[/name] is nms, seems made up/nn to me but it’s not too much “l”

Hmm so the French meaning is wealth, but it really comes from Greek origin…

I can’t speak to everything raised here, but Nameberry is a bit off a little in calling it a saint’s name. Looked into it and there is a St. Alodie, (generally said to mean “riches” or “wealthy”, but not indexed here) and a Bl. [name]Marie[/name]-[name]Leonie[/name], who was named [name]Elodie[/name] before she entered the convent; of course, this is only important if you really want a saint name, as “Blessed” may never actually reach “[name]Saint[/name]” status.
