Eloise and Evelyn? Too much? Or Isabelle or Sophia instead?

We are due with our second child and I have been agonising over names. We already have a daughter, Eloise Juliet-Rose. We mostly use Eloise but often call her Elle. We have a boy name picked, but I have a strong suspicion that this baby is a second little girl.

Our top girl options are:

Evelyn (nn Evie or Eve). It has been one of my favourites for over 10 years, I am slightly deterred by its popularity; however, my main concern is the alliteration of Eloise and Evelyn, is it too much?

Isabelle - another long-standing favourite since I was a child that I’d very popular. I like Isabelle, but really dislike Izzy as a nick name and would go for Bella or Belle (except we already have an Elle )

Sophia - my husbands suggestion, but I really like it. My concern is our last name starts with S and again it’s very popular.

I think I might have to get over my hang up of the names being too popular, as these are all quite popular names in Australia. I’ve

Others that are on our long list are:
Yvette
Hazel
Eve
Camille
Ruby
But we just can’t quite see them on our child.

In short, what is your preference and why? Is the alliteration too much? How much should I let popularity influence our decision? Do you have any other suggestions that go with Eloise?

Any input welcome!

Congratulations!

[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] Juliet-Rose is a beautiful name. No wonder you’re struggling to find another sister name.

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] is gorgeous and I love the nickname [name_f]Evie[/name_f] she sounds pretty with [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] as well I can see why you’re smitten. Personally in an ideal world I wouldn’t repeat initials just because you may feel pigeonholed into using only E names for future children. However I also feel that it’s a privilege to name a child so as long as it’s not too much (like for example [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] or Louise) go for the name you love! Another idea to loose the E issue you could use [name_f]Aveline[/name_f]?

[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] is pretty, elegant and has a sweet European flair which works nicely with [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Bella[/name_f] + [name_f]Elle[/name_f] work fine together. But [name_f]Bella[/name_f] doesn’t feel as natural as [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] and [name_f]Belle[/name_f] just because she’s not [name_f]Isabella[/name_f].

[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is actually my favourite (I do have [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] on my list as a honour middle but [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] up front with the spelling [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] both me and my partner love her) honestly I love [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]! [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is beautiful, romantic, has this old school Hollywood vibe and I also love the meaning wisdom. Yes [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is popular but personally if you love a name I wouldn’t focus on popularity! I think [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] + [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] are beautiful. I also like alliteration with names so the surname beginning with an s isn’t a major concern.

Suggestions:

[name_f]Serena[/name_f]
[name_f]Selene[/name_f]
[name_f]Geneva[/name_f]
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
[name_f]Colette[/name_f]
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_u]Blythe[/name_u]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps

I would go for Sophia/ Sofia - Isabelle is a little too common and I’d avoid Elle and Belle (would go Isobel or Isabel if you use it to keep it steamlined like Eloise), and I’m not sure about Evelyn, maybe…

But how about, Eloise and:

Imogen
Freya
Violet
Harriet
Martha
Zoe
Jemima
Audrey
Charlotte
Piper
Margot
Ada
Claudia

I love all these names! :two_hearts:

I don’t think [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] is too similar to Eloise!! Their sounds are different enough, and they’d use different nicknames, so I don’t think there’d be any issues! It’s also the least popular of your three choices, if you count [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] & [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] in Isabelle’s popularity too.

Popularity is subjective! Some people don’t care how popular their children’s names are, some do. It’s all about how much it’d bother you if, for example, your daughter had another child with her name in her classroom.

Suggestions:
[name_f]Anna[/name_f]
[name_f]Acacia[/name_f]
[name_f]Belle[/name_f]
[name_u]Celeste[/name_u]
[name_f]Callie[/name_f]
[name_f]Colette[/name_f]
[name_u]Cleo[/name_u]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] (still quite popular, but less than your main 3)
[name_u]Frankie[/name_u] (same)
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Isadora[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] / [name_u]Penny[/name_u]
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] / [name_f]Rosie[/name_f]

[name_m]Even[/name_m] though I’m personally not a big fan of repeating initials I don’t think [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] are unusable together. The rest of the names are different enough to not get mixed up and they sound nice together. I love [name_f]Evie[/name_f] as a nickname.

[name_f]My[/name_f] personal favorite of the three is [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] but the similar nicknames gives me pause. [name_m]Even[/name_m] [name_f]Elle[/name_f] and [name_f]Bella[/name_f] feels too close.

[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is fine and I appreciate that it doesn’t share any prominent sounds with your daughter’s name while still feeling stylistically compatible, but the extreme popularity combined with a strong personal preference for just [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] makes me very lukewarm about it.

So all things considered, I think my vote goes to [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] but if just [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] was an option then I’d probably go for that.

Editing to add that I really like all of the names on your longer list and would vote for any of them (except maybe [name_f]Eve[/name_f], I think I like the slightly longer names better with Eloise) if they were front runners.

I think [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] are gorgeous together. If you’re considering Eve/Evie as a nn, are you planning on using the [name_f]Eve[/name_f]- [name_u]Lyn[/name_u] pronunciation rather than evv-lyn? If you are that’s even more of a distinction between the names.

I think they’re gorgeous together, not too close at all. Both starting with same letter doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

From your other names, I think [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] is beautiful. [name_f]Bella[/name_f] could definitely work as NN.

[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] I can’t get into, and it’s super popular where I’m from, especially combining Sophia/Sofia/Sophie. Definitely more popular than Isabelle/Isabel/Isabella.

[name_u]Hazel[/name_u], [name_f]Eve[/name_f], & [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] are all very pretty also. [name_f]My[/name_f] favourite of the three is [name_f]Eve[/name_f]. Elegant and feminine.

Hth. Xxx

I think [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] go wonderful together. They’re similar sounds in a different order! I’d say [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] would be my second favorite. I don’t like [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] as much.
Out of your other choices, I love [name_f]Yvette[/name_f] and [name_u]Camille[/name_u]!

I really love [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] together! Honestly, it feels like [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] might be more similar since you call [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Elle[/name_f] sometimes, and [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] has that strong elle ending.

I like [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] With nn [name_f]Evie[/name_f] I don’t think it would be too close to [name_f]Eloise[/name_f].

[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] may well become [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] (by her own choice or because people might just start using it)

[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] - it’s okay - nice enough and solid (and fits with Eloise). That said, I think [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] would go slightly better (and I like it more :man_shrugging:)

With [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], I’d also suggest:

[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
[name_u]Vivian[/name_u]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Annabel[/name_f] ‘Anna’ ‘Annie’
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Maia[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]

Another vote for [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]! I like that she’s slightly vintage and grounded, like [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], and I personally love an alliterative sibset!

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] or [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] could possibly work as combos!

Oh thank you! I really appreciate your opinions.

So many of these names I love and many are on our list with a few I’ll add. It’s annoying how many are on our no go list.
Thank you!

Question: [name_f]Evelina[/name_f] as an alternative to [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]? I like it has both Evie/Eve and [name_f]Lina[/name_f] nn options, it’s definitely less popular and I think I like it.

To me, [name_f]Evelina[/name_f] feels a little more frilly and sweet whereas [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] feels more grounded and understated.

I actually like just [name_f]Lena[/name_f] for you, too. [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_f]Lena[/name_f] are a great set!

I like El0ise Juli3t-Rose and….
[name_f]Eve[/name_f] [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Eve[/name_f] [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]

[name_f]Elle[/name_f] and [name_f]Evie[/name_f] make such a cute sister set. You can get there using [name_f]Eve[/name_f] or [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]. Eloi$e and [name_f]Eve[/name_f] don’t sound too much alike because they are not the same syllable count, like [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and [name_f]Eloise[/name_f].

I actually think [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] is the most complimentary with [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]. I don’t mind the alliteration, unless you foresee more kids in your future.
[name_f]My[/name_f] own personal preference when it comes to multiples of the same initial is that either all kids match, or all kids of each gender match. But that’s me, and I’m very OCD about this kind of stuff. If you’re feeling irked by it, maybe having an idea of where you’d go from here if there were more kids would help.
But I think the set of [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] & [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] is darling, and you should go for it if you love it.

Personally [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] feel a bit matchy for me, and [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] ‘Belle’ is far too close to [name_f]Elle[/name_f] (also, she might decide to be an [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] one day which you dislike).

[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is lovely with [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]! I also really like [name_f]Yvette[/name_f] from your list - could still have an Evie/Yvie with that option.

Actually, i’ve met a family who let their children’s name rhyme in the ending syllable, so it’s not as repetitive as alliteration but still feels like a family. Their daughters are called: [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], [name_f]Felicia[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], nickname Celi, Feli, and [name_u]Oli[/name_u] (not sure if they use these exact spelling). I personally think that’s rlly interesting and cool. If thats what u want maybe u can try it, find name that also ends in -ise sound.

Also met I twins with reversed name: [name_f]Nadia[/name_f] and [name_u]Aidan[/name_u], which i think is super cute as well.
