Eloise or Eleanor? //

hi, everyone!

my husband and I both love the sounds & meanings in the names Eleanor & Eloise. when it comes to naming our daughters, however, these names are quite similar, so we’ll need to choose between the two.

I may have a slight lean toward Eloise based on how fresh & vibrant it feels… but I go back and forth. Eleanor is elegant & stunning as well.

contributing factors:

on my side of the family, there is a lovely 4 year old girl named Elizabeth Anne who goes by “Ellie.” we see this cousin on major holidays throughout the year. in my opinion, Ellie & Eloise are quite close, so I am unsure if i would be comfortable with going with Eloise based on that. I am close with my family, and I don’t wish to offend.

we also quite like the name Rosalie, and wonder if Eloise & Rosalie might be a bit of a tongue twister for sisters.

my husband’s late grandmother’s name was Eleanor. his sister’s middle name is Eleanor as well, but we don’t think she plans to use the name for any of her children. out of respect & honor for her, however, we’d gain her permission before giving the name Eleanor to our daughter. I would just want to be sure of our desire & intent to use it before asking her.

would love to hear your thoughts! thanks, berries! <3

Both names are classic, elegant and feminine, while strong at the same time. I totally get why it’s so hard to choose. I have a slight preference for [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], but I understand your concern about the similarity with little [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].

If you go for [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], you intend to ask your sister in law for her blessing, which is a good idea. Why not ask Ellie’s parents how they would feel if you pick [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]? If they tell you that there are no concerns on their side, than you can go with [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] if it’s still your favorite. [name_f]My[/name_f] last advice would be to go for the name you love the most when you meet your little girl. Sometimes a name just feels right when you see your baby and it would be a shame not to use it.

Good luck and both names are great :slightly_smiling_face:

I agree with the pp about asking about how the parents feel if you pick [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] before giving up on it. I personally would go with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] just because it has more nn options; [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Leni[/name_f], and [name_f]Nora[/name_f].

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] seems like the right pick for several reasons you’ve listed! It’s really just as lovely as [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] without any of aforementioned drawbacks. The fact that it is also an honor name seals the deal imo! I also just love [name_u]Lennie[/name_u] as a nickname option. Good luck!

my personal preference would be [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], but based on your reasons i think [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is perfect for you.

I vote [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. It’s a timeless classic, more nickname options, and family connection. [name_u]Winner[/name_u].

thank you everyone for your suggestions! this is really helpful.

it seems that the consensus is leaning toward ‘Eleanor.’
any more votes for ‘Eloise’ or any middle name suggestions for either?

Both are absolutely stunning!

[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is such a sweet spunky name that feels bright and sparkly. [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] was a contender for my daughter (I did have many contenders naming is hard) and I can completely understand why she’s a contender for you such a lovely name.

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is so classic she feels graceful and elegant. [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is timeless she also has a range of great nicknames so would avoid the [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] issue with your relative [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u] (she’s named very beautifully) and I like the family connection. The family connection with your husband grandmother makes the name feel perfect for you an honour name in my eyes is always the way to go. Another plus is [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] & [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] are stunning together!

If you want to [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], I do suggest having the mn initial began with J, so that to avoid confusion she could have the option EJ

[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is my favourite - so elegant with versatile nickname choices

I think [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is perfect for you !

eleanor! i love how it’s an honor name for you, and it has other nicknames like nell and nora that aren’t too close to ellie.

I would choose [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] for a couple of reasons;

a) I agree that [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] are a little bit similar and could become confusing.
b) [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] are fine for sisters, but [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] fit much more smoothly, imo.
c) I’m not keen on the “wheeze” in [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]
d) [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is currently feeling fresh but is also a bit trendier than [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], so it may not feel fresh for very long.
