What do you think of Elowen and [name]Olwen[/name]? I think both are really sweet and I love the nickname [name]Winnie[/name].
Which do you prefer as a first name?
I would consider [name]Winter[/name] with the nickname [name]Winnie[/name] but I don’t want to seperate my [name]Pandora[/name] [name]Alice[/name] [name]Winter[/name] combo.
EDIT: Any opinions on Winslet? I said I would never consider it because of it being a surname and therefore masculine in my eyes but I think it’s adorable!
I love both Elowen and [name]Olwen[/name], and I like the nickname [name]Winnie[/name] very much as well. I think it would work well with either name. I’m particularly thrilled to see [name]Olwen[/name] in this thread - Elowen and [name]Winnie[/name] seem to get regular attention on these boards, but it’s really nice to see some appreciation for [name]Olwen[/name].
Elowen, [name]Olwen[/name], and Rhoswen are my three favorite -wen names. I adore the nn [name]Winnie[/name], but sometimes I link it to [name]Winnie[/name] the Pooh.
Elowen is very pretty, I like that [name]Olwen[/name] is really unexpected but honestly when I say it I just hear [name]Owen[/name] or Old When and I’m having a hard time liking it on the whole. It’s cool but not as wearable as Elowen, FWIW. I happen to kind of like the clunky [name]Edwina[/name] ([name]Ed[/name]-winn-a, not [name]Ed[/name]-ween-a) and [name]Winifred[/name] as other ways to [name]Winnie[/name], I’d never use them personally but I sense their charm. Good luck!
I agree with a lot of this. I can’t get my mind wrapped around [name]Olwen[/name], and I have a feeling it might be difficult for a girl to wear (especially where [name]Owen[/name] is used a lot for boys.) I also really like [name]Winifred[/name] for the nickname [name]Winnie[/name].
I prefer Elowen over [name]Olwen[/name], I find it much more lyrical. I love the nn. [name]Winnie[/name]/[name]Win[/name], unfortunately I can’t seem to find any girl names that I like enough to use to get me there. I have a soft spot for [name]Winsome[/name], but can’t help seeing “win some” and thinking “you win some, you lose some”.
I’m more likely to go with [name]Win[/name] on a boy since I like [name]Winston[/name] so much (and have a soft spot for [name]Winslow[/name], but won’t be using that).
Elowen is beautiful, unique, and one of my top names. Though I prefer it to be spelled: Elowyn. Also, with the “Elowyn” spelling, you’re able to get the adorable nn “[name]Wyn[/name]”. Which I absolutely adore.
I’m not so keen on [name]Olwen[/name] though. It’s quite a mouthful and sounds rather masculine to me (most likely because of the [name]Owen[/name] connection). Maybe try [name]Rowen[/name] instead.
Unfortunately I’d want to avoid the nickname [name]Ellie[/name] being that it’s so common here. I didn’t realise until a few weeks ago how popular the name got in the late 90’s and actually reached #2 which surprised me but there’s so many [name]Ellie[/name]'s still running around all under the age of about 16 years old. So that slightly put me off the idea of Elowen, and the reason why I’ve kept [name]Eloise[/name] off my first name list too.
I adore [name]Winslet[/name] but it goes against everything I’ve ever said about surnames being masculine and that I’d never consider them for a girl so I’m not sure I could ever bring myself to use it. Although, I actually think it goes perfectly with my other favourite girls names.
[name]Olwen[/name] sounds very masculine to me; I prefer Elowen by a landslide though I do admit to liking the spelling Elowyn better.
[name]Winnie[/name] is sweet for a little girl but as she gets older you may want to introduce the nn [name]Wyn[/name]. It’s a little more grownup and chic.
Now on to the others…
[name]Winter[/name]: I’ve always really liked this name whether it be for a middle name or a first name. As for the nn, [name]Winnie[/name] works but I do prefer [name]Wyn[/name] as she grows up. I also really like your name combo minus [name]Pandora[/name]. If you remember correctly, [name]Pandora[/name] was the mythological woman who unleashed all of the universe’s evils upon [name]Earth[/name]. That right there should be enough to make you cross [name]Pandora[/name] off your name list forever.
[name]Winslet[/name]: I actually really like this. In fact, I was going to make a post later today about how celebrity surnames are very much viable for adorable, fem and male first names. I say if you love it, use it! Personally, I think it’s strong, original, and has hint of glamour to it. Plus it’s daring and exciting which is a nice change of course when so many little girls nowadays are being born with dainty, safely feminine names.
