[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone, I adore this name but I adore my pronunciation of it rather than the traditional Cornish way. What’s everyone’s thoughts on how to pronounce it or thoughts on names pronounced in an alternative way? Thanks
I always pronounce it ELL-uh-wen, but I think its proper pronunciation is eh-LOH-wen.
When I read it I pronounce it as ELL - OH - WEN…?? I’m not sure what it should be or what you want it to sound like!
eh-LOH-wen is the Cornish pronunciation ~ personally I’m not keen on changing a pronunciation unless one is from the place of origin, in which case it’s your prerogative.
Ell-Oh-Wen was my first thought
[name_f]My[/name_f] instinct is to pronounce [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] as [name_f]Elle[/name_f] - oh -when
I say it like eh-LOW-en. I’m not sure how else you would pronounce it.
I think people will naturally want to say EL-low-en unless they’re familiar with the og pronunciation; as it works in [name_f]English[/name_f], I think it’s fine to use it over the other one.
In the end it’s no different than using a [name_m]Danish[/name_m], [name_m]German[/name_m] or Italian way and pronouncing it differently to the original.
I would put the emphasis on the first syllable, as I believe is more customary in the U.S. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear eh-LOW-en, the Cornish pronunciation.
