Elsa?

What do you think of the name [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], and has the movie Frozen changed your opinion on it.

It’s not bad, though every time I hear it I think of Frozen

I like the name. I think it is polished and well-suited to girls/women of all ages.

But…

It will be associated with Frozen for a long, long time. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but it is a thing.

That said, if a little girl is named [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] nowadays, she will make a lot of little girls in her preschool and grade school classes very, very happy.

I like [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]. I would consider it myself if it weren’t as similar as it is to my top girl name.

That being said, as long as her middle name isn’t [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and any of her siblings’ first names or everyday call names isn’t a prominent character from Frozen, you should be fine.

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] has a sort of sweet-but-sharp vibe: cosy without being fluffy. It does bring to mind snow, winter, christmas markets, log cabins, ice, etc. – probably because of Frozen and because of its Scandinavian/German roots more generally.

As I say, I do think of Frozen, but not in a bad and serious way, kind of neutral – in the same way I’d think [name_f]Ariel[/name_f] → [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid or [name_m]Casper[/name_m] → the Friendly [name_f]Ghost[/name_f]. [name_m]The[/name_m] association is just there, but it’s one element of the name for me?

As a girl whose entire childhood could be described by Frozen (I’m not kidding!) the name is a little too associated with Frozen for me to ever consider it. However, Frozen aside, it’s a really pretty name! If you like [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] but hesitate because of Frozen I think [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] sounds pretty similar without the association.

I know an [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], grant it, she was born and named multiple years before Frozen came out, but was definitely in little girl territory when it was released. I knew her in high school, and she didn’t seem to have trouble with it, even though her twin sister was literally [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], which is pretty close to [name_f]Anna[/name_f].

I’m really fond of [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]! Frozen will always be there but I like [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] more than [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], and it’s a timeless, international choice. I’ll always be pro-Elsa!

I really like [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]! I don’t really care about the Frozen reference. I feel like once it’s tied to a real-life person, the movie association will fade and the name will become associated to that person. Also, Frozen isn’t the worst association to have with a name.. it doesn’t change my name about how much I like it.

I have a niece named [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]. When her parents first said they were going to use it for the baby they were expecting, I thought they were joking because their other daughters are obsessed with Frozen, as are my daughters. However, it’s been less of a big deal than I expected and it’s a beautiful name!

I think Frozen has made the name [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] more recognisable across different parts of the world. [name_f]Given[/name_f] how popular the movie is, and how many people may have first encountered the name through it, I think the association is particularly strong in places like the UK, US and [name_m]Australia[/name_m]. That said, I still think [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is a really nice-sounding name in its own right. I also liked @silver.magnolia’s suggestion that if you love the name but feel the Frozen association is too strong, [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] could be a good alternative, or as a nickname for [name_f]Elsa[/name_f].

My first association is the lioness from the book (and film) [name_m]Born[/name_m] [name_f]Free[/name_f] by [name_f]Joy[/name_f] Adamson. I also work with the elderly and have met a number of women with the name too, so while I have seen Frozen a number of times it is far from my strongest association.

I do think most all little kids will immediately think of Frozen, however, as it is still über popular and has with another film coming out soon. While it may not be an issue, that could very much depend on the personality of the child with the name in question. For example, one older lady at my job daily bugs her roommate (who is an [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]) by singing the snowman song when she’s using the bathroom. This [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] takes the teasing well, but another may not

Still too tied to Frozen for me, but otherwise I think it is beautiful. I just can’t brush off that association.

It’s such a pretty, simple name but the association would be too much for me personally. I do think it’s usable though.

I also really like [name_f]Ilsa[/name_f] or [name_f]Elska[/name_f] for something very similar but different.

I like Elsa, it’s compact, feminine & lovely. Frozen may or may not have affected my feelings though, that it’s a little buttoned up & stern somehow. That’s not a bad thing I guess, don’t want it to be too cutesy.

The name Disney’s really done dirty is Ursula. I love Ursula & Ursuline, and the nn Ursie!

Another possibility is Elisabeth, Elspeth or Elsbeth nn Elsie.
