This is my great grandmothers name & it is pronounced [name]Elle[/name]-veer-uh. I always figured people would say [name]Elle[/name]-vy-ruh like the Halloween character so maybe it had too strong of an association. But now I’m thinking that maybe it could work? Maybe since the name [name]Vera[/name] is somewhat popular the correct pronunciation would be more likely? Could this be usable? It’s a family name & an uncommon way to get to nn [name]Elle[/name] or [name]Ellie[/name]…but I think [name]Vera[/name] is what I would use. Wdyt?
I had a student with the same name and she used the pronunciation as you want. She is the only [name]Elvira[/name] I’ve met [name]IRL[/name] and I only connected it to the other [name]Elvira[/name] when I saw it in writing. Not sure if other people had problems pronouncing it. Obviously most kids didn’t have the connection with the creepy character so no problems there.
I’ve known one in my lifetime and she pronounced it [name]Elle[/name]-Vy-Ruh.
I think it’s a lovely name, but the connotation would be hard for me to get past.
Would you be open to changing the spelling for your own child? Switching [name]Elvira[/name] to [name]Elvera[/name] or Ellevera or Ellvera so that it is still your grandmother’s name but doesn’t have the spelling that a. will most likely be mispronounced or b. reminds people of the Halloween character?
I think it wouldn’t be bad if you changed the spelling to Ellvera or Ellevera.
Yea, I would change the spelling to [name]Elvera[/name].

I think [name]Elvira[/name] is a great name, it’s the name of my BF:s brothers girlfriend. Your pronunciation is the common one in my country.
