It’s super tied to [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] [name_m]Peterson[/name_m]'s [name_f]Elvira[/name_f], Mistress of the Dark, persona. I don’t mean to be rude at all, but I just don’t see anything appealing about the name.
Never heard of [name_f]Elvira[/name_f], Mistress of the Dark (I’m in the UK, though).
I really like the name too but it always gets a negative wrap. I pronounce it el-[name_m]VEER[/name_m]-ah; I know a little [name_m]French[/name_m] [name_f]Elvire[/name_f] (el-[name_m]VEER[/name_m]) - also lovely.
In the US it is heavily tied to [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] (mistress of the dark) and though i’ve never seen the show, movie or wherever she originally came from I still associate the name with a sort of dominatrix feel. Also, my dad named his porsche [name_f]Elvira[/name_f], after the lady…so, yeah. I could never use it but if you don’t have any of these associations I think it’s quite pretty, as long as she isn’t from the US.
I live in the UK and I’ve never heard of [name_f]Elvira[/name_f], Mistress of the Dark. I don’t think that series was popular here. I actually think of [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] [name_u]Madigan[/name_u], a classic Swedish film from the 1960s. I think the name is lovely. I’ve only heard it pronounced el-[name_m]VEER[/name_m]-ah.
