This is the one word-name that I’m weirdly falling in love with. I love the glowing, smoldering image it evokes.
However, I’m not sure if this name is too out there, especially since I’m generally more comfortable with classical names or at most, not-too-modern names.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think I should use this as a first name? And if it’s too out there, what about as a middle name?
It ranked in top 200 last year, not out there at all. Also similar names [name_f]Amber[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f] etc. are very common so it’s not outlandish.
I don’t think it’s out there, I just don’t think it’s all that classic. I’d be a bit surprised if I saw a sibset of say [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] and [name_u]Ember[/name_u]. On the other hand, modern classics, like [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] I think fit with [name_u]Ember[/name_u] a lot better (minus the clashing sounds).
I don’t love it. It is usable, though. I view it more as a quirkier choice of name than, much like [name_u]Blaze[/name_u], and [name_u]Winter[/name_u]. Not as “out there” as say [name_f]Apple[/name_f] or [name_u]North[/name_u].
It seems that it missed the opportunity for a boost in familiarity during the recent Em- wave over the past few years (Emma, Emily, Amelia, Emilie) that brough up other unconventional names eapecially for girls, like Emmerson and Emmit, etc.
Asking if a name is too out there is like asking how long is a piece of string, I’m afraid. Different people have such different expectations about what they want from a name. For some people it has to be something very different, and they would be disappointed if they came across another. Other parents get anxious as soon as someone else doesn’t recognise or queries their name choice.
Ember is a lovely name, and definitely usable. I’d love to meet one! It is unusual though, and people will comment on that, and will sometimes mistake it for [name_f]Amber[/name_f].
Neither of those things would stop me using a name such as this if I loved it, but you just need to be prepared for this. As a middle name it is no issue - beautiful!
I love the name [name_u]Ember[/name_u], as this name gives me the exact image you described
I’ve never met an [name_u]Ember[/name_u]. I’ve met plenty of [name_f]Amber[/name_f]’s. So it doesn’t seem trendy to me, it seems very refreshing while not too “out there” because it’s so close to a very well-known name.
I like [name_u]Ember[/name_u], I like the warm imagery associated with its meaning. I don’t think it’s too out there. That being said, I do think it’s possible many people may mistake it for [name_f]Amber[/name_f] at first. I know a [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f] that gets mistaken for [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f] and [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f] often, and they are less similar than [name_f]Amber[/name_f] and [name_u]Ember[/name_u]. But I wouldn’t let that stop you from using it, unless you already have an [name_f]Amber[/name_f] close in the family.
I think it fits in great with the other modern names such as [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_m]Emrys[/name_m], [name_u]Emery[/name_u], etc.
I know and 19 year old [name_u]Ember[/name_u], she has had no problems with her name as far as I know (except occasionally being confused for [name_f]Amber[/name_f])
