I’m due in the next couple of weeks and babe is still nameless. We have been going back and forth on [name_u]Embry[/name_u] for the last few months…the only reason we haven’t committed to [name_u]Embry[/name_u] is because of its similarity to embryo. [name_m]How[/name_m] quick did you think of the word embryo when you read [name_u]Embry[/name_u]? We are definitely discussing different spellings like Embrie or Embree. Thoughts?
For what it’s worth, we have thought of all other similar names like [name_f]Cambry[/name_f], [name_u]Emory[/name_u], [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u], [name_u]Ember[/name_u], etc. and we aren’t really interested in those. It’s either [name_u]Embry[/name_u] or something totally different.
I thought of embryo too… although my very first reaction would be that anyone hearing it would think that it was one of the other similar names ([name_u]Emory[/name_u], [name_u]Ember[/name_u], [name_f]Amber[/name_f], [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u]). For me, it’s the sound of it that’s a bit confusing, not the spelling necessarily. I don’t know if that’s of any help or not.
Yes, embryo was exactly my first thought when I saw the title of this post. I would personally go with something else (I like [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] the best from the names you mentioned). You mentioned [name_f]Cambry[/name_f], so I thought I’d also suggestion [name_f]Cambria[/name_f]?
I didn’t notice the embryo thing until you pointed it out. [name_m]Even[/name_m] so, that similarity doesn’t tarnish the name for me. There are dozens of names out there that are just one letter off from another word. Unless it’s obvious teasing bait (which in this case, I think you’re probably safe), I don’t see what the issue would be.
If anything, it looks like a smoosh of [name_f]Emily[/name_f] or [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_f]Bree[/name_f] to me. I think it’s a pretty name.
I didn’t think of embryo until you said it. I was thinking it was a variation of [name_u]Ember[/name_u]. As long as the middle or last name don’t start with an O I think you should be ok to use it.
I immediately thought of embryo. If that is the name for you, this is one situation where I would use a more modern spelling such as Embree or Embrie. It’s not the sound, for me, it’s the fact that visually, [name_u]Embry[/name_u] is an “o” away from embryo. When I hear Embree (that would be my choice), I don’t think of embryo.
I like [name_u]Emory[/name_u], [name_f]Amber[/name_f] and [name_u]Ember[/name_u], but [name_u]Embry[/name_u] just reminds me of Embryo… not sure I can get behind this one, sorry.
I’ve had this name or similar names on my list before and I’ve always taken it off because it made me think of embryo.
Despite this, I don’t think that’s the worst association for name. It certainly isn’t negative. If you love it, don’t settle for something you love less.
Spelling it differently would help, but to me it would also take from the name and I don’t like them. Additional spellings: Emmbrey, Embrey.
Unfortunately [name_u]Embry[/name_u] seems to be the only thing we can agree upon…We did consider [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] but we just don’t love it as much! I think we will go with Embrie and that spelling, maybe nobody will notice its similarity to embryo LOL… [name_u]Avery[/name_u] is very popular and that always makes me think of ovary but nobody seems to notice?!
For me the spelling doesn’t matter, because I hear it as embryo, even if I don’t see it that way. (I don’t have the same issue with [name_u]Avery[/name_u]/ovary because the beginning sound is different… for [name_u]Avery[/name_u] I actually think more of aviary in terms of sound).
If I imagine a girl with this name introducing herself, “[name_m]Hi[/name_m], I’m [name_u]Embry[/name_u] (Embrie)…” my mind immediately adds on the “o” to the end of it, and I think she’ll hear that a lot when she gets older. As others have said, it’s not worst association in the world, but it’s definitely noticeable.
Embryo is the first thing that came to mind. What about [name_u]Emery[/name_u], [name_u]Everly[/name_u], [name_f]Amber[/name_f], [name_u]Ember[/name_u]?
You could also change the spelling to Embree or Embrie to avoid the embryo association.
