Emilie or Emily

Hubby and I have chosen to name our daughter Emily/Emilie, but we can’t decide which spelling to use. We live in a very bilingual region of Ontario. I am Danish and French (grew up in France and Quebec) and he is English (New Zealand). Here are the two options. What do you think?

Emily Greenfield

Emily Alicia Greenfield

Emilie Greenfield

Emilie Alicia Greenfield

[name_f]Emily[/name_f] definitely.

[name_f]Emilie[/name_f] might be pronounced differently in different languages. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] is clearer!

I like the [name_f]Emilie[/name_f] spelling a lot more, I’m not sure about the combo of [name_f]Emilie[/name_f] Alicia/Emily [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] though.

(Tbh, the [name_f]Emilie[/name_f] [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] spelling has just too many letter i’s and looks off to me.)

I don’t have a very strong preference, but I think [name_f]Emilie[/name_f] would be a sweet nod to your [name_u]French[/name_u] roots! If she eventually lives somewhere where [name_u]French[/name_u] isn’t spoken as widely, she may get a lot of people assuming it’s “Emily”, but I personally don’t think I’d mind, especially with the cultural connection. I’m a fellow [name_f]Emily[/name_f], and LOVE my name, btw! Wonderful choice!

clearly i am in the minority here but with you guys living in Ontario, i’d go with Emilie!! i think it’d be familiar for both the french & english speaking people you encounter. and i love the connection to your french roots <3

is Greenfield the surname? or is it a middle? if it’s a middle, i wouldn’t include Alicia. but if it’s a surname, i’d use Alicia

Is [name_f]Emilie[/name_f] the [name_u]French[/name_u] version? I’m only familiar with [name_f]Emily[/name_f] but I’m in the US. Either one is very nice. I’d go with whichever is more common where you live as long as you don’t have a preference.

A fellow Ontarian! Honestly, I know probably just as many Emilies as Emilys, and none that I’ve met seemed to have much of a problem with the francophone spelling. It’s a simple correction, and I know most people I know wouldn’t be perplexed by the ie spelling. It comes down to what you (+ your partner) prefer, both look lovely with the surname. I think both are lovely, if anything I lean a tad more in the direction of [name_f]Emilie[/name_f], since it honors your francophone roots which you should be very proud to show off, and the bilingual nature of your area allows for it without much (if any) confusion.
Either way you can’t go wrong!

Emilie Alicia Greenfield is lovely

I personally pick Emilie over Emily any day of the week, the 'ie spelling is the only thing that attracts me to the name since it’s heard around so often
