Hey all! [name_m]New[/name_m] here. Not pregnant just working on it.
So I have a daughter, [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f].
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] is a name on my list for daughter #2 but the popularity factor is making me consider [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] as a variant.
Name I had originally chosen was [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Maureen[/name_f]. It’s a family name, as with [name_f]Anna[/name_f]'s middle name. But [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Maureen[/name_f] sounds ridiculous.
So first, ideas on mn for [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], bonus points if it honors [name_f]Maureen[/name_f].
Second, does [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] work with the simplicity of [name_f]Anna[/name_f] as a sib set? [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]? Or do you stumble over it?
Last: should I ignore the popularity of [name_f]Emily[/name_f] since it’s been falling for a few years and use it or go for [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] full steam ahead?
I love [name_f]Emily[/name_f], think it would work wonderfully with [name_f]Anna[/name_f] (it’s the same sort of classic, pretty name) and would actually see it as a refreshing choice — among the [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] trend. I also like that [name_f]Emily[/name_f] doesn’t have the double letter like [name_f]Anna[/name_f], as [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] would. But they’re both pretty, strong and sweet names so I don’t think you can lose on this one!
I really like [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Maureen[/name_f] but if you’re going with [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] or want to change it with [name_f]Emily[/name_f], these names are all related to it:
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] and [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] are both lovely names. It really depends on how concerned you are by popularity. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] was given to less than 10,000 girls in 2017 (compared to 26,500 at its peak), but it was still the 12th most used first name. So while it’s nowhere near as popular as it used to be, it’s still used a fair bit!
Would you use the -leen or -lyne pronunciation for [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]?
I wouldn’t worry about how [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] sound together. Parents give their children names of different lengths and styles all the time. Provided you give [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] a shorter middle, it will balance with [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] just fine. If you really wanted to, you could nickname [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] “[name_f]Emmy[/name_f]” to go with [name_f]Anna[/name_f]. However, a lot of [name_f]Emily[/name_f]'s and [name_f]Emma[/name_f]'s use that nickname too.
To honour [name_f]Maureen[/name_f] I’d use another Irish name and/or another variant of [name_f]Mary[/name_f].
Thanks! I’m so glad you find it refreshing. I don’t actually know any little [name_f]Emily[/name_f]'s so I thought I must be missing some massive enclave of [name_f]Emily[/name_f]'s living nearby. But it seems not ”
I love both the names [name_f]Emily[/name_f] and [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]. I would choose [name_f]Emily[/name_f] though. I find it a beautiful classic name and respite popularity it is what we chose for one of our daughters! I think it fits much better with [name_f]Anna[/name_f] too.
I love [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] together!
What about [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Maura[/name_f]? Same root name as [name_f]Maureen[/name_f], and you have the Maur bit as the middle and the leen bit as the first!
I think [name_f]Emily[/name_f] was popular in early 90’s I haven’t met any baby/ toddler [name_f]Emily[/name_f]'s so I don’t think popularity will be an issue.
Whilst I prefer [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], I think [name_f]Emily[/name_f] is nicer with [name_f]Anna[/name_f], and with [name_f]Maureen[/name_f]. I actually think [name_f]Emily[/name_f] probably isn’t as popular as it seems, at least not on babies born nowadays, anyway.
I had to jump on this thread because I too have a daughter named Anna Dorothy. What a great name! Dorothy is also an honour name for us.
Like most previous posters, I also prefer Emily Maureen as a sister. Anna and Emily are a lovely, timeless pair. I also like how you can use your honour name in full, mirroring the use of Dorothy. Emmeline, by contrast, feels a little trendy.
I do think Emmeline could work though. If it were your one true love, I would encourage you to use it. But it sounds like you prefer Emily and are only hesitating because of it’s popularity. Popularity is not what it used to be, and there will only be one Emily in your family, which in my view, is where it counts.
