Emily...talk me in or out of it!

I’ve always hated names in the top 50 with a passion. But I had a name dream where I named a little girl [name_f]Emily[/name_f]. I never payed much mind to it with it’s popularity and how ubiquitous it is, but I couldn’t stop thinking about that name this morning. What do you think of [name_f]Emily[/name_f]? Talk me in or out of it!

Out.

It is a dear, dear name but just so very everyday.
It would be in stark contrast to the unusual [name_m]Gannon[/name_m].

Beautiful name - always a classic.

It is a classic and oh so pretty and if you really love it then it is the perfect name for your little princess.

Suzywoo, the “everyday name” feel is what I was worried about. :frowning:

sablonde, Thank you  I do love the classic feel.

[name_m]Rollo[/name_m], thank you

I know so many Emilys and Emmas that it has become boring to me. That is just my thought. I have never met a [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], despite it being amazingly popular, so if it isn’t a name you here too much near you, it is a pretty name. I just find it boring since it is soooo popular near me. If it isn’t near you then go for it.
Dreams are so weird. I had a dream that I had a beautiful daughter named [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Celia[/name_f], and it made me love that combo.

I used to loathe names that were super popular as well…I still try to avoid them but I have come to the conclusion that if a name that you are in love with is popular it is better to choose that than to settle for another name just for the sake of it not being as popular. I’ve done some research on this and nowadays people are naming their children more unique names over all…it’s not like in the 80’s when every other girl was given the name [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] or [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] and there were 4 Jessicas in every class at school. There is still a top 10 list of names but not nearly as many parents are choosing these names as before. I say you go for it if it feels right to you, or you could try to find an alternative “[name_f]Em[/name_f]” name that is less popular. We are strongly leaning towards [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] for our second daughter even though that is #106…our first daughter’s name isn’t even in the top 1000.

I think [name_f]Emily[/name_f] is a great classic. I prefer [name_f]Emma[/name_f], but they both strike me as great names – though yes, popular among many generations. I think it has become less popular in recent years but it’s something of a middle of the road name. I think my issue is that having met some many different Emmas and Emilys, I feel like anyone could be one. It’s become generic.

[name_f]Emily[/name_f] of 13 years here! I love my name. I don’t like when people hate on names just because of popularity…if you love it, use it!

[name_f]Emily[/name_f]'s a pretty name with a lovely rhythm, but it’s so overused I’m afraid its lost its character.

I talked to a couple of the people who run the large day care/toddler programs in the area and they said they don’t see the name [name_f]Emily[/name_f] much and that they see a lot of [name_f]Emma[/name_f]'s. I think that people aren’t using [name_f]Emily[/name_f] because they think everyone else is using it and that may not be the truth. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] is classic and beautiful and always will be. I would put it up there near [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. It’s like [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] or [name_u]Michael[/name_u] for a boy. Yes, there are a lot of them but it also just seems to work.

I think it’s pretty - popularity doesn’t bother me, just how absolutely dull it is.
