Emma or Mackenzie

There is a strong possibility my husband and I will have twins. We’ve got our boy name [name_m]Andrew[/name_m].

I haven’t found a girl name that I love as solidly as the boy name. I loved [name_f]Emma[/name_f] some years back, but then it started trending hard. The popularity is the only hesitation I have with the name. For my state it is number 5 on the most popular names list, so it is not as popular as elsewhere. I just don’t want her to be “[name_f]Emma[/name_f] E.”.

[name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] is on my list, as I think its a sweet name. However, I know that some people seem to have problems with the name, and if it is that widely hated I don’t want to give my baby that name.

Please Help! <3

I think you’ll find [name_u]MacKenzie[/name_u] hated more here than in the real world. It’s a boy name so many don’t like it on girls (myself included). However, for me its a “grey area” sort of name that can be gotten away with since it’s a surname, and it would be hypocritical of me to say I hate it since I believe surname names should be unisex. [name_u]MacKenzie[/name_u] is a personal exception because the [name_m]Mac[/name_m] part literally means son of…that’s why it’s weird on girls. But with the amount of female Madisons out there, it fits in. That being said, [name_u]MacKenzie[/name_u] and it’s (many) variants are all heavily popular too.

So I definitely vote for [name_f]Emma[/name_f]. It’s a classic, solid name with a nice meaning and a long history of usage. It would definitely feel less trendy would age better [name_f]IMO[/name_f].

I prefer [name_f]Emma[/name_f].

I don’t really like [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u], [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] and [name_f]Emma[/name_f] sounds like a much better sibset.

What about Mackinley?

I really like both [name_f]Emma[/name_f] & [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u]. I don’t think [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] is hated as it’s not an offensive/upsetting name. It just makes me think of that cute little girl from dance moms.

Also, if you like [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] but not as a first name, [name_f]Emma[/name_f] [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] sounds quite nice too.

A lot of people on this site dislike unisex names. I’m not one of them, but I do prefer more feminine names. I don’t see anything wrong with [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u], I’ve never met a male [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] so it strikes me more as feminine than masculine or unisex. I personally dislike the name [name_f]Emma[/name_f]. To me, it’s boring and overused. However should [name_f]Emma[/name_f] be more appealing to you, I say go for it. I prefer [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u], but go with your heart.

I also forgot, I know a MacKenzie and Andrew sibset!

I really love [name_f]Emma[/name_f], so my vote goes to that one. Also, I don’t think you’ll have to worry about [name_f]Emma[/name_f] being one of 3 in her class, at least no more than you’ll have to worry about [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] getting lost in a sea of [name_m]Mac[/name_m]/Mc names.

At least with [name_f]Emma[/name_f], there is only one popular spelling, for [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] there’s [name_u]Makenzie[/name_u] & McKenzie (+countless creative spellings), both relatively popular, too, so she might end up [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] E. anyway while also having the spelling of her name confused with [name_u]Makenzie[/name_u] W.'s.

I don’t think [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] is widely hated. It’s not exactly popular on this site though, probably because it’s a 90s/early 00s fave, and it’s a surname.

I love [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] actually, and much prefer it to [name_f]Emma[/name_f]. [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] feels like it has much more potential, and is only 73rd nationally. Though popularity’s not a concern for me, I do think that if a name is overused (like [name_f]Emma[/name_f], and in my area, [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]) it loses it’s “sparkle” so to speak. I guess I mean it just doesn’t wow me anymore and feels very boring (?) even though it’s a nice enough name.

[name_m]Andrew[/name_m] and [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] sound great together.

First, I think [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] sounds fine with either name. Second, I would say I like [name_f]Emma[/name_f] better, but…I am a bit biased;) And you are right, it is quite popular. I don’t think you’ll find [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] to be as universally despised as you might think. Berries here may dislike it, but a lot of people won’t even really think about it. [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] is kind a a popular name for girls, even if not as popular as [name_f]Emma[/name_f]. If you love [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u], by all means use it! I think it’s a cute name, even if it’s nms:)

I far prefer [name_f]Emma[/name_f]. It’s also a better choice with the classic [name_m]Andrew[/name_m].

Definitely [name_f]Emma[/name_f]
You might also like less popular names like [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]

I adore [name_f]Emma[/name_f].

Honestly, I have known/know/met lots more boys and men named [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] than girls and woman named [name_f]Emma[/name_f].

Thank you guys for your honest, but kind feedback. I’m on another forum, and they’re just kind of cruel. I would have been chewed up alive for even thinking of either name.

I love [name_f]Emma[/name_f] as a name, much more than [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u]. I think that even if it is popular now, it will age much, much better than [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] will. It is a classic name that has been around forever, and for good reason too. [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] is actually a GP name of mine for a boy, I just find it more handsome and manly than I find it sweet and feminine.
[name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] sound better together than [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] and [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] does too

I agree that [name_f]Emma[/name_f] is the more classic choice and goes better with [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] [name_f]IMO[/name_f].

I love the name [name_f]Emma[/name_f]! Although it is popular, it is beautiful while not being frilly or over-the-top.

I like the name [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] too (although not as much as [name_f]Emma[/name_f].) I disagree with some of the people who have commented - I don’t think [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] is too much of a boys name. I have only seen it used on one boy. I would go ahead and use it if you love it!

Though I don’t dislike [name_u]MacKenzie[/name_u], for me it would definitely have to be [name_f]Emma[/name_f]! It may be extremely popular/trendy at the moment, but it’d be a shame to let go of a name you’ve loved for so long because of this! As a pp said, I think that [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] & [name_f]Emma[/name_f] would be a lovely sibset. It mightn’t be a unique name, but if you love it, that’s the most important thing!

I didn’t realize [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] was hated? I know plenty of [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u]'s around here!

That being said, I actually prefer [name_f]Emma[/name_f] because it is currently a little less popular from I live. But also, I feel [name_f]Emma[/name_f] is a more classic name, whereas, [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] is more trendy.

[name_m]How[/name_m] do you feel about [name_f]Gemma[/name_f]/[name_f]Jemma[/name_f]?

I much prefer the classic and timeless [name_f]Emma[/name_f].
