Emmeline, Emeline? Is there a difference?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] All,
I found [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] in my family tree. I adore it. I actually really like this spelling. My question is: is [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] pronounced the same as [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]? Where I’m from we most commonly say [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] as “[name_f]Emma[/name_f]-line”. So is [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] “[name_f]Emma[/name_f]-line” or “[name_f]Emma[/name_f]-leen” or “[name_f]Emma[/name_f]-[name_u]Lynn[/name_u]” or are all 3 correct? Thanks so much!

I prefer [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] (with the -leen pronunciation), [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] looks incomplete, imo.

I agree with pp, [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] doesn’t look complete. I say “emma-lin” but I think all of them are acceptable pronunciations.

I say them the same (alternately emma-line / emma-leen). I do prefer the look of [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]; [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] looks somewhat clinical to me for some reason? like a protein or enzyme or something like that. not sure what it is, but the double m’s distract from that. Still a great name though, either way!

I would pronounce them the same. I prefer the [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] spelling and the line pronunciation.

I say both as [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-leen? I’ve heard [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] is the traditional [name_m]French[/name_m] spelling, in which case it would definitely be “leen” instead of “line” for the ending. [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] is in my family tree, too! I love it, although I’d use the more classic [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] spelling. I think it’s gorgeous.

I prefer the [name_f]Em[/name_f]-eh-leen pronunciation and the simple [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] spelling.

Thanks everyone. Seems like the pronunciation is varied.

Not sure if there really is, but the [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] feels more like [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-lynn, while [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] makes me wanna say [name_f]Em[/name_f]-lynn or [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-line.

Both are ‘ehm-eh-leen’. “Ehm-eh-line” is also correct, but “ehm-ma-lyn” would be [name_f]Emmalyn[/name_f], which is also ok. I prefer the [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] spelling personally, as it looks a bit nicer to me, but [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] is also nice.
