Emmett or Emmitt?

[name_f]My[/name_f] grandfather’s fn and my father’s mn is [name_m]Emmitt[/name_m]. I love the name, but personally I think the spelling is flat. Would it be okay to spell it with an e ([name_u]Emmett[/name_u]) and still honor my father and grandfather? Or should I do it they way they did it? [name_f]TIA[/name_f]

I personally would spell it [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] and I feel it still honors them. [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] is very handsome.

[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] would be fine to honour an [name_m]Emmitt[/name_m].

I don’t think spelling matters quite so much if you use an “honoring” name in the front. If it’s in the middle, then I’d go with the original spelling.

I love [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]!

I love this name! [name_f]My[/name_f] brother’s name is [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_u]Emmet[/name_u] and I actually prefer this spelling, but any way you chose it’s lovely. I think it works.

I adore [name_u]Emmett[/name_u], and I think that spelling is better and I think it works just fine in honoring [name_m]Emmitt[/name_m].

I would use the original spelling, personally, as I think it is more meaningful to the people you are honoring. I actually did the same thing with my daughter [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f], who is named after my grandmother. The only time it ever bothers me that her name is not spelled the traditional way is when people on Nameberry comment on it. No one in my regular life has ever said a thing about it.

[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] definitely honors an [name_m]Emmitt[/name_m].

As long as it doesn’t offend them, I think it works. You may not want to open that can of worms by even asking…if you strongly prefer [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] you can just state that you plan to use the family name but you’re going to spell it with an e. Hopefully it will be a non-issue.

I much prefer [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] as well. I think you can still honor your grandpa w/ a different spelling.

[name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_u]Jamie[/name_u], after my grandpa - [name_u]James[/name_u], but everyone called him [name_m]Jim[/name_m]. BUT most girls are not named [name_u]James[/name_u] or [name_m]Jim[/name_m] (lol).
