Emrys and Morgana?

I love these two names but would they be too much together?
[name_f]Imagine[/name_f] if you met twins called [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] and [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] would you think that’s lovely or awful.
Surely not everyone would get the connection to [name_m]Merlin[/name_m].
Thanks for any help

I think it could be a bit too much. I would do it if you really loved it but I would think it was planned.

Both feel very Arthurian to me, but probably usable

I’ve never seen [name_m]Merlin[/name_m], but got the connection immediately. It’s a bit too much for me.

I’m in the minority here, in that, yes, there’s definitely an Arthurian theme, but I don’t see that as being necessarily a bad thing? Especially for a twin set. People theme twin names all the time, whether it’s through rhyming, or both being flower names, or both starting with the same letter or same syllable, etc. I know of a family that named all their children after Greek philosophers, another after [name_m]Roman[/name_m] generals, and oodles of religious families who name their children after Biblical characters or figures from pagan mythology. I don’t think theming sibsets is inherently a bad thing, unless the theme itself is problematic.

If the fact that people will inevitably associate these two names with Merlin, or with the broader context of Arthurian legend in general, is going to continue to bother you, here are some alternatives:

  • I am super biased here, because [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] is on my masc shortlist, and the name I’m about to suggest is on my femme shortlist, but what if instead of [name_f]Morgana[/name_f], you used [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f]? It’s a Cornish name meaning “waves of the sea,” and a Welsh variant of [name_f]Morgana[/name_f], so you’d still have a covert Arthurian connection and the theme of [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] also being Welsh in origin.

  • If you don’t care for the sound of [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f], there’s also [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f], a Celtic warrior goddess whose name is very similar in sound to [name_f]Morgana[/name_f]. [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] is neither Welsh nor Arthurian, so that breaks up the theme while retaining nearly all the same sounds.

  • If, out of the two, [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] is the name you’re more attached to, you could always use [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], as [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] is the Welsh variant of this name, so they have the same meaning.

Ultimately, I think if you love them both, you can use them both. People may assume you’re a fan of the show Merlin, or of Arthurian legend in general, but if you are, you may not see that as a downside. The only hiccup I foresee is if you have future littles, that would raise the question of whether you continue the Arthurian naming trend you started with the twins. (And if your answer is yes, I don’t see anything wrong with that. There are oodles of names with connections to Arthurian legend, so it’s not like you’d be running out of options any time soon!)

I do think of [name_m]Merlin[/name_m] right away to be honest! But depending on when you live most people might not make the connection? I don’t really remember the characters’ relationship in the legend or show but as long as they weren’t a couple or anything I think it’s fine for siblings lol. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if people assume they were named after the characters on purpose it’ll seem a bit nerdy, but not too weird.

They sound good together; however, I don’t like the sound of [name_f]Morgana[/name_f]. I think it’s the hard g.

As much as I adore both names, they really do scream Arthurian legend. I think they’d be fine if one was a first and the other a middle, but as two firsts they’re quite matchy, especially for twins.

I get the connection, but I also think [name_m]Merlin[/name_m] is usable as a name, so it’s okay to me. :slightly_smiling_face: Most people would think it’s too much, though.

i mean i immediately thought of merlin, but in the kids’ generation i’m sure it wouldn’t be a big deal at all. they are very cool names!

I get it, but I still like it!

I like them together tbh!

I didn’t know about the [name_m]Merlin[/name_m]/Arthurian connection at all so I instantly loved them together!

Having come to understand this is the theme that links them however, I think you’ve been given some great advice - as long as you are content with being thought of as a big fan of the association (whether you are or not) I don’t really see it as a problem. Sometimes there’s the relationship the characters have to one another to consider as well, but that’s not necessarily as important.

yes they would be too much
I love [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] though

what about [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] and [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f]?

I think both names are beautiful, but together it’s a bit much. [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] and [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] would work better, since [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] is so much more familiar and established outside of Arthurian legend.

Very very cool is what I’d think. [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] is not well known but I agree with @katinka and would change it to [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] or [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] so it would be less noticeable. But if you’re okay with people seeing it as related to Arthurian legend the go for it.
