Ending in y or ie

[name_f]Do[/name_f] names seem more like full names if they have y endings or ie endings? Does it depend on the name or is it always one or the other to you?

For example, does [name_f]Roxy[/name_f] or [name_f]Roxie[/name_f] seem more like a full name? What about [name_u]Abby[/name_u] or [name_u]Abbie[/name_u]?

Please respond with your favorite names that end in y/ie!

Here’s my list!

i tend to find that -ie names feel more complete, and those are the ones i like more, but with names like roxy and ruby, i much prefer the -y ending. i feel like it’s more a case-by-case situation.

my favourites are:
coralie
emmie
honey
josie
ottilie
romy
ronnie
silvie
zoey (this might be more of an -e vs -ey battle)

[name_f]Roxy[/name_f] and [name_u]Abby[/name_u] feel more like NN to me.

I live, [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_f]Sadie[/name_f], [name_f]Verity[/name_f], [name_f]Amity[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], [name_f]Emmie[/name_f], [name_f]Natalie[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f]?

I prefer names ending in ie. my actual name ends in ie, but the [name_f]English[/name_f] versions of my name ends in y. Where I live the ie version is almost never used, so my name is always spelt wrong when I tell someone my name, but I don’t really mind it’s not too much of a problem.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite ie names are:
[name_f]Reverie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]
[name_f]Birdie[/name_f]
[name_f]Essie[/name_f]
[name_f]Nixie[/name_f]
I also love [name_f]Lumi[/name_f], although that just ends in I
I prefer [name_f]Leni[/name_f] over Leny or [name_u]Lenny[/name_u]

I think all these could work as fullnames. [name_f]Roxie[/name_f], [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], and [name_f]Molly[/name_f] are especially lovely

Names I personally really like in that style are [name_f]Effie[/name_f], [name_f]Polly[/name_f], [name_u]Dessie[/name_u], [name_f]Tansy[/name_f], [name_f]Cassie[/name_f], [name_f]Nellie[/name_f], [name_f]Essie[/name_f] and [name_u]Tally[/name_u]

I tend to prefer -ie myself, however it does depend on the name for me.
For example, [name_f]Roxy[/name_f], [name_u]Abby[/name_u] & [name_f]Molly[/name_f] I do prefer with the -y and I think that is because they are much more established names with this spelling and therefore kind of look a little odd with the -ie ending. In terms of -ie, [name_u]Lexie[/name_u] and [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] looks better to me than their -y counterparts.

Some -ie & -y names I like: [name_f]Reverie[/name_f], [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f], [name_u]Indie[/name_u], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], [name_f]Idony[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_f]Ophélie[/name_f], [name_u]Journey[/name_u], Senobie, [name_f]Nixie[/name_f], [name_f]Valkyrie[/name_f], [name_f]Andie[/name_f], Adélie, [name_f]Arrietty[/name_f], [name_f]Eulalie[/name_f], [name_f]Zélie[/name_f] …

It always just depends on the name for me. But I don’t see one ending being more like a full name than the other in general.

For me, [name_f]Roxie[/name_f] > [name_f]Roxy[/name_f] and [name_u]Abbie[/name_u] > [name_u]Abby[/name_u], but [name_f]Molly[/name_f] > [name_f]Mollie[/name_f] and [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] > [name_f]Emmie[/name_f]. Some I like both equally, like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] & [name_f]Lucie[/name_f].

[name_f]My[/name_f] personal favorites:
[name_f]Annie[/name_f]
[name_f]Dolly[/name_f] (Prefer [name_f]Dolley[/name_f], but like both.)
[name_f]Evie[/name_f]
[name_u]Josie[/name_u]
[name_f]Judy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f]
[name_f]Nellie[/name_f]
[name_f]Polly[/name_f]
[name_u]Romy[/name_u] (Though I prefer [name_f]Romi[/name_f], I do like both. Never [name_m]Romie[/name_m], though.)
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_f]Wendy[/name_f]

[name_f]My[/name_f] boring answer is that I pretty much always prefer the more established spelling. The one caveat is Rosie/Rosy. I really love them both.

I think more y names feel like complete names than ie names, but it’s a case-by-case basis.

I think it completely depends on the name itself & not as much the ie or y endings distinguishing it. For example I think [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] stands alone just fine and unless told otherwise would assume that’s the full name… Though it could be a nn, names like [name_u]Avery[/name_u] & [name_f]Audry[/name_f] or [name_f]Heidi[/name_f] or [name_f]Hailey[/name_f] I would be sure we’re full names, [name_f]Bunny[/name_f] I would assume is a nn but wonder what for and a short formal sounding name with an ie or y on the end I would assume is a nickname for the more formal version of the name… [name_u]An[/name_u] example being [name_u]Georgie[/name_u] … I would assume he was [name_u]George[/name_u] and under the age of 12 [name_u]Or[/name_u] a Georgia/ [name_f]Georgina[/name_f] / [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] diminutive and on a girl the nickname for some reason I feel could be used even into adulthood.

I don’t tend to like nickname forms as full names. Hypocritical, I know, being named [name_u]Julie[/name_u] lol. That being said:

[name_u]Beverly[/name_u]
[name_f]Bryony[/name_f]

[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_u]Hartley[/name_u], & [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] are the only names I have ending in the criteria.

On the other hand, I have names that end in that ie sound that are spelled neither way such as [name_f]Everleigh[/name_f], [name_f]Landree[/name_f], [name_f]Shaylee[/name_f], and [name_f]Andi[/name_f]

for me it depends on the name for ie or y endings. Except [name_f]Molly[/name_f] where the only correct answer is [name_f]Molly[/name_f] since thats how i spell my name

This isn’t something I have ever thought about! I do think it depends on the name, though sometimes it doesn’t matter. For example, I think Rosie and Molly look more like full names than Rosy and Mollie, but Abby/Abbie and Ally/Allie could all work as full names or nicknames. But then names like Posey/Posy/Posie and Candy/Candi all seem like nicknames to me, not full names at all.

Favourites ending in ie/y:

Elodie
Emily
Poppy
Rosalie
Blakely
Ivy
Daisy
Annie
Romy / Romi
Romilly
Remy / Remi
Josie
Darcy
Darby
Sadie
Lucy
Felicity
Indie

And then as strictly nicknames, Billie, Rory, Maisie, Emmy, Savy, Millie and Addie!

I think it depends on the name for sure. The [name_f]Roxie[/name_f] and [name_u]Abbie[/name_u] spellings seem more complete in my mind, but [name_f]Molly[/name_f] or [name_f]Polly[/name_f] also more complete than their ie counterparts. ie names tend to look a little more nickname-y to me than ones that end in y, but that’s not always a bad thing.

[name_f]Emmy[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]
