Hey there!
I’m trying to expand my name lists and I was hoping you guys could help me a little. [name_m]Long[/name_m] story short, I’m Finnish and DH is from USA, currently living in Finland, but will be relocating to the states.
I want something that
will work both in the US and in Finland.
not super popular in either country.
a name with history/character/vintage charm.
I like
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Irene[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]/Josefiina (though the spellings are problematic, maybe [name_f]Josefine[/name_f]/[name_f]Josefina[/name_f] would be an ok compromise)
[name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], but they’re way too popular.
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Irene[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] remind me of old lady names. The others are okay. I prefer Wihelmina most. I also like the suggestion of [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f]…not popular, and quite beautiful!
Thanks.
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f] - I like it. Very sweet.
[name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] - Doesn’t work in Finnish and I don’t like the Finnish versions.
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] - I like it, but the spelling doesn’t quite work in Finnish. I think [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]/[name_f]Silvia[/name_f] would work both in Finnish and in English. My favorite version is Sylvi, but I don’t know if that spelling is too weird in English…?
[name_f]Leena[/name_f] - Too 1950.
[name_f]Mina[/name_f] - Spelling doesn’t work in Finnish (too close to minä, I) and I don’t think the Finnish spelling, Miina, would work in English.
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] it, already on the list.
[name_f]Anneli[/name_f] - Another name stuck in that uncomfortable spot between too old and not old enough.
[name_f]Elina[/name_f] - Too 1980’s.
[name_f]Ida[/name_f] - I like it, but like [name_f]Ada[/name_f] it’s too trendy right now.
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f] - I like it, but doesn’t work in Finnish.
[name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] - [name_f]Margareta[/name_f] would work better, but I’m kinda on the fence with this one.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - I like it, but it doesn’t work in Finnish.
[name_f]Alma[/name_f] - I like it, but might be a bit too trendy at the moment.
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] - I don’t like it.
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f] - Ok, but I don’t love it.
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] - A bit too aurora borealis for me.
[name_f]Camilla[/name_f] - Too 1970’s.
[name_f]Ella[/name_f] - My name.
[name_f]Eva[/name_f] - Too popular.
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] - Too popular.
[name_f]Frances[/name_f] - Doesn’t work in Finnish.
[name_f]Helen[/name_f] - [name_f]Helena[/name_f] would work better in Finland, but it’s too 1950’s.
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] - Too trendy.
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f] - [name_f]Julia[/name_f] would work better in Finland, but it’s too 1980’s.
[name_f]Layla[/name_f] - [name_f]Leila[/name_f] would work in both countries, I think? I like it.
[name_f]Lilian[/name_f] - [name_f]Lilian[/name_f]/[name_f]Lillian[/name_f] is too popular.
[name_f]Lumi[/name_f] - I’m not really a fan of using words as names unless they have a long history as names.
[name_f]Margo[/name_f] - Doesn’t work in Finnish.
[name_f]Mila[/name_f] - [name_f]Milla[/name_f] would work in Finland better, but it’s too 1990’s.
[name_f]Olive[/name_f] - Doesn’t work in Finnish.
[name_f]Tilda[/name_f] - I like it, but I’d rather use [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] as a nickname.
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] - Too 1980’s.
[name_f]Vilma[/name_f] - I don’t like it.
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] - I like it, but it’s a well known brand of cream cheese etc. in Finland.
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f] - Doesn’t work in Finnish.
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] - I love it and all the nickname possibilities, but it doesn’t work in Finnish.
I like all of your choices, but [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is my favorite. [name_f]Josefina[/name_f] is also very nice. [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Josefina[/name_f] would be gorgeous.
[name_f]Livia[/name_f] - I like the sound, but with [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]'s popularity and [name_f]Livia[/name_f] being almost unheard of in Finland, everyone would assume it’s a typo.
[name_f]Amalia[/name_f] - I kinda like it, but it’s so close to [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] which is really popular. I would like something more distinctive.
[name_f]Adelina[/name_f] - Ok, but I’m not really in love.
[name_f]Viviana[/name_f] - ok, but I’m not really in love.
[name_f]Melinda[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosalinda[/name_f] - I don’t like them. I think it’s because I don’t like [name_f]Linda[/name_f].
[name_f]Frida[/name_f] - I like it.
[name_f]Violetta[/name_f] - I don’t like it.
[name_f]Mona[/name_f] or [name_f]Simona[/name_f] - [name_f]Mona[/name_f] would work in Finland. It’s ok, but I’m not in love.
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] - Too trendy.
[name_f]Teresa[/name_f] - I don’t like it.
[name_f]Flora[/name_f] - A brand of margarine in Finland.
Or maybe even [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f]? - I do like mimosas but that’s the reason I could never use it as a name for my child.
Adela, Adelia - I prefer Adele, but in my mind it’s tied to that one singer at the moment.
Alessia - I prefer Alexandra, but I’m kinda on the fence with it.
Alina - Ok, but I’m not in love.
Anais - Doesn’t work in Finland.
Aniela - I don’t like it.

Elsie - Ok. Else/Elsi would work in Finland.
Estella - I don’t like it.

Georgia - Doesn’t work in Finland.
Greta - I don’t like it.
Ines - Daisy Duck in Finnish is called Iines and my family already has a dog named Aku (Donald Duck).
Isadora - I like it, but it’s not used as a name in Finland so everyone will just think of the Isadora cosmetics.
Leona - I don’t like it.
Louisa - Doesn’t really work in Finnish.
Lucia - Saint Lucia’s day is big in my city so I associate the name too much with that. Otherwise it would be a pretty name.
Mariella - Don’t like it.
Marina - In Finnish marina means whining.
Natalia - Too 1980’s.
Noelle - Ok.
Filomena - Don’t like it.
