Episode 3 - Name Hunt Boys Edition

I’m working on a list for a LO due in [name_f]October[/name_f]. Looking for some new ideas. Comments on the list as it stands at the moment would be awesome, too.

[name_m]Apollos[/name_m] ([name_m]New[/name_m] Testament choice, cool namesake, cool meaning)

[name_m]Ragnar[/name_m] (in our area this sounds like “rag” like a washcloth and “nar” as in “gnarled” - I have Norwegian heritage)

[name_u]Rigel[/name_u] (this is a star name and sounds like [name_m]Nigel[/name_m] - it’s the seventh brightest star and this is our seventh baby, counting the one we lost)

[name_m]Rainier[/name_m] (doesn’t have any particular meaning/significance to us, it just sounds nice)

[name_m]Caruso[/name_m] (also not big on meaning, though the musical connection is at least something)

[name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] (thanks @essa. Hubby likes this one a lot)

We’re not set on a Greek name (or an R name or A name for that matter) it just so happens that it’s what we have in consideration, and we haven’t used Greek, R, or A for any other kids.

We would consider a one-syllable name, but so far we haven’t come up with anything that seems right. Already eliminated [name_m]Colm[/name_m], [name_m]Pierce[/name_m], [name_u]Storm[/name_u], [name_m]Dax[/name_m], [name_u]Mal[/name_u] (and [name_u]Leaf[/name_u] and [name_m]Heath[/name_m] are too close to our daughter’s name). Hubby loves [name_u]Rory[/name_u] but only as a nn; we considered [name_m]Roderick[/name_m] as a full name for it but we don’t love it, and Hubby suggested [name_m]Ragnar[/name_m] but I don’t see the point because [name_m]Ragnar[/name_m] doesn’t need shortening. He likes [name_m]Madoc[/name_m] but I don’t; I like [name_m]Caradoc[/name_m] but he doesn’t. I’m not sure how that even works but there you have it.

The other children are C a s p i a n, Z e p h a n, E v e, P e r e g r i n e (P i p p i n), and D u l c i n e a (D a i s y).

Any ideas or input for this “round” of the boy name list? Thanks a lot!

I love [name_m]Apollos[/name_m]. It goes great with your kids’ names in that it’s unusual without being weird. And it’s just a cool name. I actually know a guy in his early twenties named [name_m]Apollos[/name_m], and he gets a lot of compliments.

I like [name_u]Alexios[/name_u], [name_m]Apollos[/name_m], and [name_m]Rainier[/name_m]. My second son is actually named [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]Rainier[/name_m]…at the time of his birth (18+ years ago) I wanted to name his first name [name_m]Rainier[/name_m] but everyone, including hubby, thought it was too outlandish. Wish I had stuck with it!

[name_m]Apollos[/name_m] gets my vote.

Thank you, @southern.maple, @mousehouse7, and @boyandgirl! I appreciate all the comments. It’s kind of awesome to hear of another [name_m]Apollos[/name_m] out there. (And it seems like 18 years ago, people at least would have still remembered the prince!)

Thank you, @southern.maple, @mousehouse7, and @boyandgirl! I appreciate all the comments. It’s kind of awesome to hear of another [name_m]Apollos[/name_m] out there. (Strange about [name_m]Rainier[/name_m]…seems like people would have at least vaguely remembered the prince).

Now that I’ve thought about it a bit, I really like Aquilas for you too. A boy name with an -s ending seems very natural with your kids’ names. [name_m]Barnabas[/name_m], [name_m]Amias[/name_m], [name_m]Rufus[/name_m], [name_m]Julius[/name_m], [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], [name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m], [name_m]Tobias[/name_m]… Ambrose? You and your husband seem to like names that span a few different style groups, which is fun! Coming up with suggestions isn’t as hard. :stuck_out_tongue:

We haven’t really entertained the S-endings before, because we have a T surname, and it’s so easy for the first name and last name to just run together. I’m trying out some of these longer S-ending names and thinking it might work after all. [name_m]Pierce[/name_m] T y l e r? No good, it sounds like Peer Styler, and just sounds weird! [name_m]Apollos[/name_m] T y l e r? Eh, maybe. It’s tricky and I’m working on coming around to it, though my husband has pretty much always liked the Greek names. We have THREE ends-in-N boys now so really…enough is enough! Bless you for saying it’s easier to come up with names for us. Our styles are so hard to pin down, even WE are confused.

I really like the R names on your list with your sibset-- [name_m]Ragnar[/name_m], [name_u]Rigel[/name_u], and [name_m]Rainier[/name_m].

Some other R possibilities:

Rannulf/[name_m]Ranulph[/name_m]
[name_m]Raphael[/name_m]
[name_m]Raymond[/name_m]
[name_m]Rembrandt[/name_m]
[name_m]Reynard[/name_m]
[name_m]Rhodri[/name_m]
[name_m]Roland[/name_m]/[name_m]Rowland[/name_m]
Rossiter
[name_m]Rudyard[/name_m]

Other suggestions:

[name_m]Amaury[/name_m]
[name_m]Anselm[/name_m]
[name_m]Archibald[/name_m]
[name_m]Barnabus[/name_m]
[name_m]Bartholomew[/name_m]
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m]
[name_m]Clement[/name_m]
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m]
[name_m]Deverell[/name_m]
[name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m]
[name_m]Evander[/name_m]
[name_m]Harold[/name_m]
[name_m]Ignatius[/name_m]
[name_u]Laurence[/name_u]
Latimer
Leofric
[name_u]Lionel[/name_u]
[name_m]Lysander[/name_m]
[name_m]Malachi[/name_m]
Mauris
[name_m]Nicodemus[/name_m]
[name_m]Patricius[/name_m]
[name_m]Solomon[/name_m]
[name_m]Sylvanus[/name_m]/[name_m]Sylvester[/name_m]
[name_m]Tarquin[/name_m]
Uisdean
[name_m]Ulysses[/name_m]
[name_u]Valentine[/name_u]
[name_m]Valerian[/name_m]
[name_m]Virgil[/name_m]
Wulfric

Hm, I hadn’t considered that names with -s endings could run into “[name_u]Taylor[/name_u]” like that. I don’t hear it when I say it out loud, but I suppose it could be an accent thing?

I really love the look and sound of Rainier with your other children. I like that it adds to the subtle nature theme with C a s p i a n, P e r e g r i n e (P i p p i n), and D u l c i n e a (D a i s y). My second choice would be Apollos. When said out loud those two feel the most right with your sibling set.

Balthazar
Lysander
Batholomew(and it’s many variants)

I like [name_m]Apollos[/name_m] and [name_u]Alexios[/name_u].

For [name_u]Rory[/name_u], how about…?

[name_m]Robinson[/name_m]
[name_m]Romero[/name_m]
Rodolpho
Romerus
[name_u]Roscoe[/name_u]
[name_u]Rousseau[/name_u]
[name_m]Roosevelt[/name_m]
[name_m]Gregory[/name_m]
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_u]Story[/name_u]
[name_u]Emory[/name_u]
Corinthian
[name_u]Dorian[/name_u]
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m]
[name_u]Corin[/name_u]
[name_m]Mordecai[/name_m]
Balthazor
[name_m]Anchor[/name_m]
[name_m]Rutherford[/name_m]
[name_u]Corbin[/name_u]/[name_m]Corbitt[/name_m]
[name_m]Cormac[/name_m]
[name_m]McCormac[/name_m]
Yorvick
[name_m]Zoren[/name_m]
[name_u]Windsor[/name_u]
[name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m]
[name_m]Florencio[/name_m]/[name_u]Florentine[/name_u]
[name_m]Isidore[/name_m]
[name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m]
[name_m]Salvador[/name_m]
[name_m]Riorden[/name_m]
[name_m]Victor[/name_m]
[name_u]Orion[/name_u]
[name_m]Orlando[/name_m]
[name_m]Orsin[/name_m]
[name_m]Orpheus[/name_m]
[name_m]Thorfin[/name_m]
[name_m]Thoreau[/name_m]
[name_m]Thoren[/name_m]

Ok, so that’s a lot of names and most of them are quite a stretch to get to [name_u]Rory[/name_u] but I definitely think the ones that begin with [name_f]Ro[/name_f] or Or are useable. My favourites with nn [name_u]Rory[/name_u] are [name_m]Orsin[/name_m], [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m], [name_m]Rutherford[/name_m], [name_m]Riorden[/name_m], [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u], Rodolpho and at more of a push [name_m]Isidore[/name_m], Corinthian and [name_m]McCormac[/name_m].

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps! [name_m]Even[/name_m] without the nickname [name_u]Rory[/name_u] I think some of these names would be great options!

Did you know [name_m]Paul[/name_m] Revere’s fathers name was [name_m]Apollos[/name_m]? Cool! I like that name more and more for you! It seems perfect. And all of your kids names are kind of fanciful-sounding, and evocative, and [name_m]Apollos[/name_m] fits that perfectly! That is one reason I’m not a huge fan of [name_m]Ragnar[/name_m] for you - it sounds quite forceful and ‘heavy’ compared to the other names, imo. But - I do like the name in general and particularly the middle for you a lot - [name_m]Apollos[/name_m] [name_m]Ragnar[/name_m] - very handsome and impressive!! And perhaps even [name_m]Apollos[/name_m] [name_m]Ethan[/name_m] [name_m]Ragnar[/name_m]

Also - all your boy names would have a ‘p’ then:)

I really like your children’s names!

[name_m]Apollos[/name_m] would be awesome.
The R- names sound too difficult and agressive to me  Sorry!

Many more comments and suggestions — thanks to all! There are a lot of good ones here; quite a few have been on the list already so you know you’re on the right “track.” [name_m]Raphael[/name_m], [name_m]Barnabas[/name_m], [name_m]Bartholomew[/name_m], [name_m]Benedict[/name_m], [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m], [name_m]Ignatius[/name_m], [name_m]Malachi[/name_m], [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m], [name_m]Gregory[/name_m], [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m], [name_m]Rutherford[/name_m], [name_m]Cormac[/name_m], [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m], [name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m], [name_m]Riordan[/name_m], [name_m]Victor[/name_m], [name_u]Orion[/name_u], [name_m]Orlando[/name_m], [name_m]Atlas[/name_m], [name_m]Eben[/name_m], [name_m]Ozias[/name_m], & [name_m]Basil[/name_m]. On my “GP I don’t think I can really use it” list: [name_m]Rembrandt[/name_m], [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m], [name_m]Roosevelt[/name_m], [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m], [name_m]Thoreau[/name_m].

Some new suggestions I hadn’t considered before & will think about: [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m], Alexian, [name_m]Solomon[/name_m]. The latter two do have N-endings, which, it seems, I always like. [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] wasn’t quite right but [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] is a pretty great suggestion, he’s one of my favorite Biblical guys, and I could see [name_u]Rory[/name_u] working as a pet name for it. Cool idea.

Honorable mention to: [name_m]Salvador[/name_m], [name_m]Nicodemus[/name_m], [name_m]Ivanhoe[/name_m], [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]. I like all of these but I don’t think they are quite right, and we know a little [name_m]Valentin[/name_m] already. [name_m]Salvador[/name_m] might make it as a middle.

I’m taking Aquilas off the list. I don’t love it as much as [name_m]Apollos[/name_m], and the spelling-to-pronunciation is more confusing. Plus, I like the OS ending better than the AS. So, off it goes. I’m thinking about adding [name_m]Caruso[/name_m], though it’s in the category with [name_m]Rainier[/name_m], having a cool sound but not really much personal significance.

@davisellu - Thanks for your perspective! It’s so interesting that the R names are favorites of some people, and least favorites of others! Great suggestions, thank you.

@southern.maple - Could be local accent. Could be that I’m picky beyond sensibility. My husband never has had the problem I’ve had, and he usually has good advice, so I might just need to get over myself.

@ikfly - I do like the nature connection with [name_m]Rainier[/name_m], too. Thank you for your suggestions!

@essa - Your [name_u]Rory[/name_u] “full names” list is genius, and yes, even if you don’t stretch it to try to use that nn, there are some awesome names on the list. Some have already been on the list.

@mousehouse7 - Cool info, thanks for adding that! I hadn’t thought of the P’s either.

@mccharlie - Thanks! My husband and I are in agony almost every time, but we always come out to something more interesting than either of us would have come up with on our own. Thanks for your perspective. You didn’t care for the R names and someone else said they were their favorites! So interesting. I really appreciate getting different viewpoints to consider. Your list is awesome, thanks. [name_m]Basil[/name_m] was my first choice on the first draft list I made a few weeks ago, but Hubby didn’t like it at all! That’s how it goes sometimes.

Update: My husband likes [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] a lot, so it has been added to the list. Sounds like of the options we have at the moment, [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] and [name_m]Ragnar[/name_m] are Hubby’s favorites. [name_m]Apollos[/name_m] is far and away my front runner. [name_m]Just[/name_m] need some time to think about these now, I guess.

We’re still game for more ideas, if anyone has them! Thanks!

[name_m]Apollos[/name_m] & [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] is amazing with your children’s names !!!Tough choice but I think I prefer [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] . [name_m]Apollos[/name_m] is lovely but I think it would constantly get confused with [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] [name_f]IMO[/name_f] .

Some suggestions (sorry for any repeats)

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] @bellerose! Thanks for stopping in here, too. And for your great list. Some of these have been on the list already so you’re on the right train of thought!

We’re keeping [name_m]Apollos[/name_m], [name_m]Ragnar[/name_m], and [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] on the list to think about for now. Next up: middle names. Thanks for your comments and ideas! You Berries have been truly helpful.
