Pronounced eh- ROOKs. Came across this name in Greek mythology, and I was intrigued. What do you think? Is it actually usable? Or is it gp status only?
If I came across this name, I would naturally pronounce it er-ICKS (maybe I’m uncultured a bit though haha), like [name]Erik[/name] with an s, so you might want to consider those possible pronunciation problems. Its not really my style; however, I think it would fit in with today’s little tykes seeing as the letter ‘x’ is extremely popular right now. I think it is definitely is usable, but I’m not sure if you could nail the eh-ROOKS pronunciation 100% of the time.
[name]David[/name]
I pronounced it as eh-[name]RIKS[/name], as well. It’s different, but it’s still usable. It would probably be mis-pronounced, as [name]David[/name] said, often. And mis-spelled. Really, though, my name’s [name]Sarah[/name] and it’s mis-spelled constantly, so I wouldn’t let those issues stop you!
That is how I originally pronounced it as well ( and honestly I think I like that pronunciation better). It wasnt until i looked up the name that i realized how it is supposed to be pronounced. My tastes on names are usually much more mellow than this. So the fact that i like it is weird…for me. Thanks for the input!
If you wouldn’t mind a few suggestions, you might like the Finnish name [name]Eero[/name], pronounced “arrow”, which feels kind of similar, although that’ll probably get “ee-roh” some of the time. You also might like [name]Hendrix[/name] or names ending in -ric, like [name]Cedric[/name] or [name]Osric[/name]. [name]Just[/name] thought I’d throw those out there
[name]David[/name]
Ooh! I really like [name]Eero[/name] and [name]Hendrix[/name]! Thanks for the suggestions. Those will be going on my list as we’ll
Honestly, I think it’s too over the top for real life. It looks like the name of a video game character. Would be a neat name for a pet though.
I think it looks like a cleaning product. Sorry.
I googled [name]Eryx[/name] and looked around a bit; some entries say it should be pronounced Ericks. Either way, I like the look of the name.
I don’t think that the majority of non-greek or people who weren’t classical studies majors in college will pronounce eryx the way you want.
As part of the above group the first thought I had was that it was a modern twist on the name [name]Eric[/name].
I wouldn’t use it !
Thanks for the input everyone! I love the look of the name, and I actually prefer the " Erics" pronunciation. I just don’t want it to look like I’m trying to be trendy or “yooneek” with the name [name]Eric[/name] …which is sadly what most people will think I’m doing, even though [name]Eryx[/name] is a legit name. So sadly, I think I’m going to have to label this as a gp.
