Esme, Violet or Sylvia?

I’m one week from my due date and having naming jitters.

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] - Up until about a month ago I had settled on [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. Then the latest social security names came out and it is shooting up in popularity. I’m seeing it all over name boards and birth announcements. I’m starting to “shrink away” from [name_f]Violet[/name_f].

[name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] - [name_f]Esme[/name_f] has always been a contender but I’m wary of Twilight jokes. [name_f]Esme[/name_f] means ‘loved’ in [name_m]French[/name_m]…which is special to DH and I. We were married in [name_f]France[/name_f] and visit often so it’s a special meaning to us. I also think its a beautiful name that’s not too cutesy. [name_f]My[/name_f] DH loves it and actually suggested it without knowing the twilight association. [name_f]My[/name_f] big thing here would be coming to a place that I didn’t let the jokes bother me.

[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u] : Then about a month ago - our elderly neighbor gave us a BEAUTIFUL hand knitted shawl for our unborn baby. Her name is [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I both thought “[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]…what a beautiful name!” So I’m now thinking [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] with the nn [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f].

I think [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] is beautiful and timeless but I’m wondering if I’m trying to hard to find an obscure yet established name. When I hear others say their name is [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] it doesn’t grab me like [name_f]Violet[/name_f] or [name_f]Esme[/name_f] does. It just feels ‘normal’ its only when I start to really think about it that I think “yes, beautiful name!” I can picture out daughter becoming anyone she chooses and carrying this name well. It means “of the forest” which is nice as my DH and I love forest walks.

So this is my over-thinking. Help!!!

Of the three, I like [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u] ‘[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]’ the best. She’s a gorgeous little thing indeed. There’s both sophistication and whimsy in [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] and those two things rarely does one get from a single name…I like it. I prefer [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] over [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], but with [name_u]June[/name_u], [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] does flow better.

I never used to be able to picture [name_f]Esme[/name_f] on a child, but for some reason I can these days, and I think it would be a lovely little thing. [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is lovely, and I like the meaning behind it for you. Twilight is definitely fading fast these days…I really don’t think you’d cop much for [name_f]Esme[/name_f]…it’s not such a strong association with that anyway, and was gaining popularity ever so slightly even before Twilight.

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], doesn’t seem to flow all too well, due to the L’s in each name as well as the similar ET(H) endings.

I like [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] the best, [name_f]Violet[/name_f] second and [name_f]Esme[/name_f] not at all.

I love [name_f]Esme[/name_f], it’s short, pretty and unusual.

I would use [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] or [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]. So gorgeous! [name_f]Violet[/name_f] would be my second choice. I have yet to meet a [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. Not a fan of [name_f]Esme[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] too. A really great name. Go for it!

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is totally gorgeous!!! <3  Also love Elizabeth Violet…

I quite like all three of your choices but I think my favourite is [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u], I like the meaning and the look of [name_f]Esme[/name_f] but the flow seems a little off, and I agree about [name_f]Violet[/name_f] becoming far too popular despite how pretty it is.

They are all beautiful names; you can’t go wrong! [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite is [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u].

I still like [name_f]Violet[/name_f] the best. SO beautiful!

[name_m]Man[/name_m] I just don’t get the love for [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]. The only thing I can think of when I hear the name is Saliva…it’s just so off putting for me. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is cute though.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite is [name_f]Esme[/name_f], the meaning that you have for the name is just so precious! I love names with beautiful personal meanings. I honestly wouldn’t worry about Twilight. It’s popularity has significantly died down, and most kids wouldn’t know the reference anyways. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is also beautiful!

It seems like you love [name_f]Esme[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] the most, [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] the least of the three. I’d bring all three to the hospital with you, and once you see your daughter you can choose!

First off, I want to say that I love all three names, and I agree with pp that you can’t go wrong.

Please make sure you pick a name YOU love! Yes, [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is getting more popular, but it’s not like it’s in the top 5. Most of your days won’t be spent worrying about how many other little Violets are out there. If [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] doesn’t grab you like [name_f]Violet[/name_f] or [name_f]Esme[/name_f], don’t use it.

For what it’s worth, I also like [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Esme[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u] as combos. [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is great as well- [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is my favorite name.

Good luck!

I love [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f].

I prefer [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] to [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], so if it were [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u], this might be my favorite.

Anyway, all are lovely, you can’t go wrong!

I am not a huge fan of [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u], just doesn’t work for me. I like [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] though, very cute! I also had the name [name_f]Esme[/name_f] on my initial list (also with [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] as the mn). I too had a love for the meaning and sound of the name. However, then I found out about the Twilight association and every time I mentioned the name to people that was the response I got “oh like from Twilight”. UGG! So I became turned off, however my husband still loves it! Maybe a combo with your other name picks…[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Esme[/name_f] or [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]? Good luck!

Thanks guys!

I feel like I’m already calling this baby [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] in my head.

Very useful feedback!

I love [name_f]Esme[/name_f] and regret not using it myself.

I’m loving vintage names myself at the moment, so my vote goes to [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]. I think seeing it on a little lady would give it the freshness to others that it has had to you. Like the nn [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] too. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] would be my second choice, but don’t like the nn [name_f]Vi[/name_f]. [name_f]Esme[/name_f] is ok, but think its a lot like [name_f]Evie[/name_f] and other similar sounding names that are so popular right now. (Although my personal faves are all kinda ‘[name_f]Olivia[/name_f]’ - sounding, so I can’t really say much! Lol)

I’m glad I’m not alone. I don’t like the name [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], not even a little bit. I find it a bit off putting too.

[name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Esme[/name_f] and I promise I’m not biased  but I love [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]. And [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is such a lovely name, I just don’t love it paired with [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. [name_u]Ever[/name_u] consider [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]'s Spanish variation [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]/[name_f]Ysabel[/name_f]?
