What do you think of when you hear the name Esmeray/ Esmeree? Its not made up, its actually from an arthurian legend. Its pronounced ez-mer-ay.
Does it remind you of [name_f]Renesmee[/name_f] from Twilight? Im really starting to love the name Esmeray, but the fact that people might think of Twilight when hearing it really puts me off. I think its a beautiful name, and I love the possibility of the nn [name_f]Esme[/name_f].
Im drawn to somewhat unusual names, especially names from mythology. My SO and I disagree alot when it comes to names because our styles are so different. He does like somewhat unusual names, but not super unusual. For ex. He loves [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_u]Artemis[/name_u], but [name_f]Elektra[/name_f], [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], and [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] are too “out there.”
I know im getting off topic, and if youve read this far: Thank you. Basically I just want opinions on Esmeray, and hear any suggestions you might have for other names that you think i may like.
I actually did think of it as a spin off of [name_f]Renesmee[/name_f] from Twilight… at first.
However, after that first impression I thought it was a version of [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f].
It’s just sad this book/movie (and woman who wrote it) have tainted names to this extent.
New[/name_m] [name_m]Roman[/name_m]]It’s pretty. I’m not familiar with her story, but I do love names from legends and mythology. I didn’t think of Twilight until you mentioned it. I’m not a fan of Twilight, so my head doesn’t automatically go there. My very first thought was, “ooh, pretty.”
I just looked her up and found this, for anyone that’s curious about the story (as I obviously was):
Esmeree the Blonde
“Daughter of [name_m]King[/name_m] Guingras, from whom she inherited the kingdom of [name_m]Wales[/name_m]. The sorcerers Mabon and Evrain entered her kingdom, laid waste to her city of Snowdon (thereafter called Desolate City), and turned her into a serpent until either she agreed to marry Mabon or a knight rescued her by defeating the sorcerers and enduring a kiss from her in serpentine form—called the Fearsome Kiss. Esmeree’s servant, Helie, traveled to [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]’s court to find a knight to rescue her, and Helie came back with [name_m]Gawain[/name_m]’s son, Guinglain. Guinglain defeated the two wizards and reluctantly allowed the snake to kiss him, thus ending the curse. Esmeree wanted to marry Guinglain, but Guinglain, having fallen in love with the Maiden with the White Hands during the journey, made an excuse to leave, promising to rendezvous with Esmeree at [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]’s court. When she reached [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]’s court and failed to find Guinglain, [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]—who approved of the marriage—called a tournament at the Castle of Maidens, knowing that Guinglain, who never missed a chance to win honor, would show. Guinglain’s participation made him lose the love of the Maiden with the White Hands, and he was thus free to marry Esmeree. The two were wed in [name_m]Wales[/name_m], and Guinglain became [name_m]King[/name_m] of [name_m]Wales[/name_m].”
It definitely made me think of twilight, and although not ‘made-up’ it does have that sound to me. I like the suggestion of [name_f]Esmerelda[/name_f], but think [name_f]Esme[/name_f] on it’s own is gorgeous.
I have heard of Esmerie, a french version of [name_f]Esmerelda[/name_f] or Emelrald. I love it, especially the NN [name_f]Esme[/name_f]. And I like twilight but hate the name Renesme and would not have thought of it if you hadn’t asked.
Most men tend to like female names they associate with women they have known, and this means usually more common names. O think you will like french names. I think you will like also:
Thanks for the replies! I really appreciate it. I do love [name_f]Esme[/name_f] on its own, but the thought of Esmeray is just so intriguing. It makes me smile.
verminator : Thanks, I like a few of those. A couple are actually on my list.
First thing I thought of was Twilight. But I’m sorry to say that I don’t really like it Though if you do, don’t let other people’s opinions stop you! <3
I immediately thought of Twilight (probably because I’m mildly dyslexic and read “Renesme”). I get what you’re going for, but personally am not a fan of the name.
Twilight has ruined so many names for me. Its so disheartening. I was so excited about this name, but I don’t want people thinking I named my daughter after a fictional vampire baby. Especially when I think renesmee was a mess of a name.
Twilight 100%. It could have a beautiful history, but it’s not a well-known one. But the Twilight connection is super well known. It also makes me think of [name_f]Desiree[/name_f] & [name_f]Esme[/name_f] or [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f]. Sound-wise I don’t love it. If you love it, go for it. But if you want a rare, long, exotic & flowing, I think there are better choices without low brow pop culture connections.
I like Esmeray a lot! I am not familiar with the Arthurian legend Esmeray, but I came across it as a Turkish name when I was doing research for a novel I wanted to write, centered in 1910s-Turkey. I fell in love with it for it’s quirky, but feminine, unusualness. I liked [name_f]Esme[/name_f]/Esmey as a nn, too (said ez-mee, not ez-may). If I ever pick up the story again (which I have every intention of!), her older sisters will be [name_f]Sofia[/name_f], Adalet, and Roxelana (all of which seem to be Turkish, as well, with the exception of [name_f]Sofia[/name_f], which seems pretty international).
For what it’s worth, in the probably 5 or so years that Esmeray has been on my distant radar, I have not once thought of Twilight, and I still don’t see [name_f]Renesmee[/name_f] = Esmeray. Esmeray is kick-butt and utterly cool. [name_f]Renesmee[/name_f] is a hot mess, haha (and I’m so mad it rules out [name_f]Wren[/name_f] Esmee for me!).
Thanks, [name_u]Ashley[/name_u].
I didn’t know it was Turkish too, that’s interesting. I’m glad not everyone immediately thinks of twilight. Roxelana is very interesting too.
I didn’t think Twilight. But I did think you were a very young mother making up a name UNTIL I read your explanation. [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u], maybe?
I’m going to back that up - one of my [impecably researched] baby name books says Esmeray is a Turkish name meaning “dark moon.” Also, I did not think Twilight at all. I just thought maybe it was a medieval form of [name_f]Esme[/name_f] or something. I think it’s gorgeous and spunky and unique.
