Estella vs Morwenna

Which name do you like better and why? What are the impressions/imagery/aesthetics you get with each name? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] would be awkward on someone that is not cornish and has never been to cornwall in their entire life?

[name_m]Ah[/name_m], I adore [name_f]Estella[/name_f]! There’s just something romantic and elegant about her, but also she’s more down-to-earth than other elaborate names; both impressive and very wearable. She feels a bit more classically Victorian, maybe because of the Great Expectations association, whereas [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] feels a bit more mystical/witchy. [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] is also lovely, though! I’m not Welsh so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I reckon it’d be fine if you used it - as far as I’m aware it doesn’t have any significant cultural ties that’d make it weird for you to use it, and it has a pretty universal sound. If [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] could rank in the US top 500 once upon a time, I don’t see why [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] couldn’t be used!

[name_f]Estella[/name_f] is literary, bright and sparkling - it’s got a kind of sweeping feel, a celestial grandeur - but it isn’t ā€˜too much’ either. It does remind me of Great Expectations.

[name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] is witchy, mystical, warm but rugged - I do get imagery of Cornish coastline  I might assume someone had a connection of some sort to Cornwall, but given how names are more widely now used, I don’t think it would be too odd.

I think I prefer [name_f]Estella[/name_f] slightly better, possibly because it reminds me of one of my fave books

Yeah, [name_f]Estella[/name_f] is like the clear night sky on a cool, spring night while [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] is more a cloudy dusk at the first stirrings of autumn so it sorta depends on which vibe you want. I personally prefer [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] but I prefer [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] to both.

I do not think the Cornwall thing matters.

I vote [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f], I immediately think of the character in [name_m]Doc[/name_m] [name_m]Martin[/name_m]. I see her as spunky, loyal, friendly and a bit odd in a good way. I could see the mysterious aspects since it sounds similar to [name_f]Morganna[/name_f] but not as strongly as previous posters. I personally don’t think you need a connection to the country to use a non-religious international name (religious and cultural exceptions exist) but I can’t really speak to this one as an Untravelled American.

I can’t quite place what feels off about [name_f]Estella[/name_f], perhaps I lean more towards [name_f]Estelle[/name_f]. Both feel quite a bit older that [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] but I’m not opposed to ā€œGrandma namesā€ in any way, I actually quite like them. [name_m]Just[/name_m] something about [name_f]Estella[/name_f] seems awkward but it could just be me.

I much prefer [name_f]Estelle[/name_f]. Its sharp and sparkly.

Im not a big fan of [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f], its too heavy for me, and personally feels a little awkward to say.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

I love love love [name_f]Estella[/name_f]. But I mostly love the way it looks and feels more than I like actually saying it out loud. I think it’s just hard to intentionally say the ā€˜Eh’ part; just [name_f]Stella[/name_f] on its own flows much easier. But [name_f]Estella[/name_f] is so much more beautiful & elegant than just [name_f]Stella[/name_f]! I’ve toyed with the idea of [name_f]Estella[/name_f] nn [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f] or [name_f]Essie[/name_f].

[name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] is really neat & unique. It’s strong & feminine & interesting. The main part I like of [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] is that it lends itself to the nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]. I don’t think I’d worry about the not being Cornish part. People use names from other cultures all of the time.

I really don’t have a good answer for you, do I? :joy: I think all in all (actually, for sure) I like [name_f]Estella[/name_f] more. It reminds me of Great Expectations. I don’t think that [name_f]Estella[/name_f] is a particularly good guy character, but she’s so glamorous that it gives [name_f]Estella[/name_f] a lovely vibe.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] my rambling helps.

[name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] is my favourite! I like how she feels magical and fierce in the best way. The subtle nature connection is a positive as well. [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] feels more interesting than [name_f]Estella[/name_f].

I can understand the appeal of [name_f]Estella[/name_f] to others, but there’s something about it that I’ve never been able to enjoy. However I do really like the nickname [name_f]Essie[/name_f].

If you’re not Cornish and not of Cornish heritage, I would go with [name_f]Estella[/name_f]. If you’re honoring your Cornish heritage, I would go with [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f].
