Etta/Ettie as nn for Juliet?

I have always thought the name [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is beautiful, but probably wouldn’t use it because I’m not a fan of the inevitable nicknames [name_f]Julie[/name_f] or [name_f]Julia[/name_f]. However, I’ve had [name_f]Etta[/name_f] and [name_f]Ettie[/name_f] on my girls name list for a while. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think either would make sense as nicknames for [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]? Would you spell it [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] as the formal name if she was going to go by [name_f]Ettie[/name_f]? [name_m]Or[/name_m] does it make more sense to just use [name_f]Etta[/name_f] or [name_f]Ettie[/name_f] and skip the formal legal name?

I think it can work and no, doesn’t have to be Juliette/Julietta spelling.

If you solely want [name_f]Etta[/name_f] or [name_f]Ettie[/name_f] and wanna avoid [name_f]Julie[/name_f] or [name_f]Julia[/name_f] at all cost though, I’m in favour of using [name_f]Etta[/name_f] as a stand alone.

Personally, I think we can try to insist on certain nickname, but if we dislike the more intuitive nickname, probably skip that name in the first place. We can choose how to introduce the child and ask people to use our preferred nickname, but when she’s older, she (or her friends) could end up choosing a different nickname (Julie) and we no longer have control over it.

i think both etta and ettie would totally make sense, and i don’t think you would have to spell it as juliette! juliet might not be the best to use if you’re really not a fan of julie or julia, but i don’t think it would be too hard to avoid these nicknames, especially when she’s little. i agree with @luneth though, you wouldn’t have control over it once she gets older, so if you really dislike those nicknames, it might not be best to use the full formal name.

I think it makes total sense! I don’t think you need to spell it [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] to make it work either.

In terms of using [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] vs Etta/Ettie, I think you have to weigh up a few things:

  • do you like just [name_f]Etta[/name_f] or [name_f]Ettie[/name_f] more than you like [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]? or was not having an appealing nickname the thing stopping [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] being higher on your list?

  • would you be disappointed if Etta/Ettie didn’t stick and she went by her full name only?

  • would you be disappointed if you used [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] and a different nickname stuck (maybe given by someone else/chosen by her?) would you mind if she liked [name_f]Julie[/name_f], [name_m]Jules[/name_m], [name_f]Lettie[/name_f], [name_m]Jet[/name_m], [name_m]Jay[/name_m], JJ etc?

  • do you want her to have a fuller name with options or have what she actually gets called on her birth certificate?

Good points and also I think I prefer [name_f]Lettie[/name_f] over [name_f]Ettie[/name_f] as a nickname now that you mention it!

Ettie and Etta both work! I think that you could spell it Juliet or Juliette, either works! @Greyblue also has some great points!

[name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is a gorgeous name! I don’t think it needs a nickname, honestly, but I also believe [name_f]Etta[/name_f] and [name_f]Ettie[/name_f] work well as nicknames. [name_f]Etta[/name_f] would be more intuitive for [name_f]Julieta[/name_f] / [name_f]Julietta[/name_f], but it still works. You may also like Ju, [name_f]Juju[/name_f], [name_f]Lili[/name_f] and Liet.

Would it bother you if your daughter one day decided to go by [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] exclusively or a different nickname?
Which option do you love the most? [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f] or [name_f]Ettie[/name_f]?

Personally, I prefer [name_f]Etta[/name_f] and [name_f]Ettie[/name_f] as nicknames. However, if you are only are considering [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] because of those possible short forms, I would advice you to go with [name_f]Etta[/name_f] nn [name_f]Ettie[/name_f].

As long forms of Etta/Ettie, you can also consider:
[name_f]Natalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Colette[/name_f]
[name_f]Cosette[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] / [name_f]Violetta[/name_f]
[name_f]Marietta[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] / [name_f]Harrietta[/name_f]
[name_f]Odette[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Lynette[/name_f]
[name_f]Alethea[/name_f]
[name_f]Bethany[/name_f]
[name_f]Yvette[/name_f]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] / [name_f]Elizabetta[/name_f] / [name_f]Beth[/name_f] / [name_f]Betsy[/name_f]
Bernardette
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_f]Annette[/name_f]
[name_f]Bridget[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] / [name_f]Margaretta[/name_f]
[name_f]Ethel[/name_f]
[name_f]Loretta[/name_f]
[name_f]Petal[/name_f]
[name_f]Nicolette[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f]
[name_f]Letitia[/name_f]
[name_f]Olivette[/name_f]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosette[/name_f]
[name_f]Annabeth[/name_f]

It’s very sweet in theory, but I do think you’d have to introduce her as [name_f]Etta[/name_f] for it to stick and put down [name_f]Etta[/name_f] as a preferred name on school forms and other things like that to bypass the usual [name_m]Jules[/name_m] / [name_f]Julie[/name_f] or even the use of the full name instead of [name_f]Etta[/name_f] - just saying from my experience with intuitive nicknames.
It’s a little more intuitive for [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] or [name_f]Julietta[/name_f] than the [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] spelling but it works by all means! I really love nicknames that elaborate on on the final syllable and I think they should become more mainstream

Etta/Ettie definitely work for [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], the [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] spelling makes the connection a bit more obvious. There’s still a chance she could choose one of the other nicknames when she gets older so wether or not you just go for Etta/Ettie as a full name would depend on how ok you are with that possiblity. [name_f]Ettie[/name_f] feels a bit too nicknamey to me but [name_f]Etta[/name_f] could work on its own.

  1. I think it totally works as a nickname

  2. However, if you are going to exclusively or primarily call her Etta/Ettie, then I would scratch [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] and just name her what you would actually call her, especially since Etta/Ettie is not the most intuitive nickname and starts with a different letter from [name_f]Juliet[/name_f].

  3. Another nickname I like for [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is [name_m]Jules[/name_m]. I think it is modern but still classy, without having the dated feel of Julie/Julia.
