So my husband wants to use the name [name_f]Etta[/name_f] if we get pregnant with a girl because it honors his grandma (her mn) but for some reason it is one of those names that I can only picture as a middle name. I am trying to find a way to incorporate [name_f]Etta[/name_f] into a name without just simply using [name_f]Etta[/name_f] because I know how much it means to him. The name Ettalie popped into my head when I was browsing through names because of the name Ottalie (I think that’s how it is spelled). So what do you think? Too made up sounding? Other “etta” names or names that could have [name_f]Etta[/name_f] as a nickname are welcome as well.
I think it’s amazing that you and your DH are going to honor his grandma by using her middle name. [name_f]Etta[/name_f] is a gorgeous name on its own, but I understand why you would like it to be longer.
Honestly, I cringed when I saw the title. My thoughts were roughly along the lines of, “Ugh, not another smoosh of two names.” Though I am glad you aren’t exactly smooshing two choices together, the name Ettalie isn’t very pleasant. It feels a bit harsh, like you forced the -lie ending. Though, when spoken aloud it does sound nice. I would probably stay away from Ettalie and choose a legitimate name with a nickname of [name_f]Etta[/name_f].
theb4ndit: Thank you! I was kind of thinking the same things that you said so I agree. I won’t use Ettalie. I do like your suggestions of [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] and [name_f]Colette[/name_f] (especially since my name is [name_f]Nicole[/name_f]) and I have considered those so I like hearing other people suggest those.
sodallas3: Yes! I do love [name_f]Rosetta[/name_f] and its one that keeps coming up. My only worry is that when I hear the name I think [name_f]Rosetta[/name_f] [name_m]Stone[/name_m] (the program for learning a new language). Its not a bad association necessarily but just kind of odd.
My favorites are [name_f]Loretta[/name_f], [name_f]Coretta[/name_f], [name_f]Rosetta[/name_f] and [name_f]Colette[/name_f]. [name_f]Colette[/name_f] is a sweet name for the daughter of [name_f]Nicole[/name_f].
I was also recently introduced to [name_f]Zetta[/name_f] which I think is awesome! It could even be a nickname for [name_f]Rosetta[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Etta[/name_f].
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] is lovely on its own. Ettalie sounds too much like [name_f]Italy[/name_f], and the -ley/-lie/-lee/-leigh ending is so incredibly overdone at this point.
emsky: Ooo I hadn’t thought of [name_f]Coretta[/name_f]! I like that one. I’ve always loved the name [name_f]Cora[/name_f] because of a sweet older woman I knew when I was younger. Great suggestion!
southern.maple: Yeah the reason I kind of lean towards the ley/lie type endings is my mom’s name is [name_u]Leigh[/name_u] and my grandma’s middle is [name_u]Lee[/name_u]. I think that’s why I’m drawn to them at least. But I hadn’t thought of the [name_f]Italy[/name_f] connection. I decided not to put Ettalie on our list but I actually sort of like that it sounds like that
