I love the idea of using the name Ette/Etta but am worried that everyone is the USA would say “Eda” and ask a ton of questions about spelling. Am I over thinking this or no.
As someone from the pnw area of the USA, I feel [name_f]Etta[/name_f] and [name_f]Edda[/name_f] would definitely be pronounced the same. However I think most people would know it was spelt [name_f]Etta[/name_f] and not [name_f]Edda[/name_f].
Seconding this - I feel like people know the name well enough?
I’m from the opposite side of the US as a previous poster and the d and t sounds definitely would be pronounced the same in the accent here too. However, I know a little [name_f]Etta[/name_f] and it seems like people caught on to the spelling of her name really quickly or were already familiar with it (like [name_f]Etta[/name_f] James).
I am from the southwest US. We are notorious for not pronouncing our T’s correctly
However, there is a difference between how I would pronounce [name_f]Etta[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Edda[/name_f]. It isn’t as distinct as it would be for someone from the UK, but they are still a little bit different.
For what it is worth, I think [name_f]Etta[/name_f] is a beautiful, simple, no-fuss name
I love [name_f]Etta[/name_f]! I’m in the southern US and while I do think [name_f]Etta[/name_f] and [name_f]Edda[/name_f] could be pronounced similarly, there would be no confusion on spelling. I’ve know several Etta’s that were in my grandmother’s generation. I think it is common enough, in this area anyways, that there would t be an issue.
It’s one of my top three names. I think pronunciation would go okay with a little help along way.
I have [name_f]Etta[/name_f] blue bird on my list. I love how simple but eye catching it is.
Really interested in this post
I live in the Deep [name_u]South[/name_u] and [name_f]Etta[/name_f] would not be pronounced like [name_f]Edda[/name_f]. [name_f]Etta[/name_f] is still knocking around as a church lady name, and I know at least one [name_f]Etta[/name_f] who is under five. There’s also the great [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_u]James[/name_u] where the name would also be instantly recognizable.
i feel the pronunciations of etta vs edda would be very similar, but associations with, for instance, etta james, would help with familiarity and spelling!
Because of the singer, I feel that [name_f]Etta[/name_f] is a totally familiar and accepted name in the US and all over the world. It might be pronounced closer to [name_f]Edda[/name_f], but just because of accent, not because people think the name is [name_f]Edda[/name_f] and not [name_f]Etta[/name_f].
And Id also say Ette and [name_m]Ed[/name_m] would not be pronounced the same in my accent if that helps!
