Eugene... Honest thoughts

So we are probably going with the name [name_m]Ford[/name_m] for little man on the way, in honor of my great grandmas maiden name. My dads middle name is [name_m]Eugene[/name_m] which also is the name of the town my hubby grew up in. My hubby loves [name_m]Eugene[/name_m] and wants it as the middle… Problem is my dads always hated [name_m]Eugene[/name_m] and was embarrassed of it all through school… So thoughts should/could we still use it? Or do I need to keep searching for another family name that my hubby likes and my dad likes?

[name_m]Ford[/name_m] is a great name

Personally I don’t think using someone’s name that they didn’t like is much of a way to honor them… My mom kept suggesting [name_u]Howard[/name_u] as a middle name for my son, which was my dad’s middle that he did not like, but I would not do it.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] a suggestion- what about 2 middle names? That way [name_m]Eugene[/name_m] could be one but he could have another to tell people if he is also embarrassed by it/one that is more meaningful to your dad/family.

I like [name_m]Eugene[/name_m] a lot! But I honestly don’t think [name_m]Ford[/name_m] [name_m]Eugene[/name_m] flows the best. It could work, however.

Yes, @jadnf!!! Two middles would really add some more flow and maybe soften [name_m]Eugene[/name_m] for your dad’s sake.

Another suggestion I’ve heard, if you want to honour a relative but that person really dislikes their own name, is to allow them a say in choosing a different name, e.g. your Dad could contribute to or pick one from your short list. Maybe the name chosen could have a meaning appropriate to your Dad’s personality or interests?

My father in law hates both of his names. [name_m]Eugene[/name_m] is his middle so he would be unhappy if we used it.
What if you did variants of [name_m]Eugene[/name_m]?

[name_m]Ford[/name_m] Uxío (Oo-she-aw)
[name_m]Ford[/name_m] Owein
[name_m]Ford[/name_m] [name_m]Eugen[/name_m] (Oi-gen)
[name_m]Ford[/name_m] [name_u]Owen[/name_u]

If that’s not your taste why not find something with the same meaning?

I really like [name_m]Eugene[/name_m]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if the person you’re honouring isn’t a fan of their name, I don’t think it’s a problem for you to use it. It still shows a great deal of love and respect. And if you love the name, then that’s more reason to use it.

I think [name_m]Eugene[/name_m] is very nice. It has special meaning to me, because it’s a name of my dear relative and I also like [name_m]Eugene[/name_m] Onegin. In my mind, it could totally work, especially as a middle.

I think your father might see his name in a different light on a baby.

I agree.

Although personally I am not fond of [name_m]Eugene[/name_m], I feel strongly about honoring loved ones. I think [name_m]Ford[/name_m] [name_m]Eugene[/name_m] flows well.

Personally, I like the name [name_m]Eugene[/name_m]. However, if someone hates it and it is their name, then you may want to do something different. i like the idea of two middle names, maybe another middle name then [name_m]Eugene[/name_m]. I also like the idea of using diminutives of the name [name_m]Eugene[/name_m], such as [name_m]Eugenius[/name_m], [name_f]Genya[/name_f], [name_u]Gene[/name_u], or maybe even [name_u]Owen[/name_u]!

I think [name_m]Ford[/name_m] [name_m]Eugene[/name_m] has a nice flow, however, I feel like if the honored love one hates their name that it takes something away from the concept of it being an honor name. What about [name_m]Ford[/name_m] [name_u]Gene[/name_u]?

Also [name_m]Eugene[/name_m] means noble, so maybe taking that meaning with a different name (see list below). My favorite would be [name_m]Ford[/name_m] [name_m]Ansel[/name_m] for the meaning.

Another way to honor a loved one is to ask their input on the name i.e. if your mn weren’t [name_m]Eugene[/name_m], what would you have liked it to be? What would you choose for my child? That way, the child would remember his mn came from his grandfather - even if it isn’t his grandfather’s name.

[name_m]Ford[/name_m] [name_m]Ansel[/name_m] ([name_m]Ansel[/name_m] means “follower of a nobleman” - nice s/o to your dad)

[name_m]Ford[/name_m] [name_u]Grady[/name_u] ([name_u]Grady[/name_u] means [name_m]Noble[/name_m]/Illustrious)
