Eulalie? Eu-lay-lie? Eu-lally?!

Hello,
I’ve really fallen in love with the name [name]Eulalie[/name]. It seems quite popular on this site, but I’ve only ever seen it written down (I remember reading it in the [name]Edgar[/name] [name]Allen[/name] [name]Poe[/name] poem) and I was wondering how it would be pronounced- You-[name]LAY[/name]-lee or YOU-la-lee. I’ve been thinking of it as YOU-la-lee and that is the version I’ve fallen for. I’m in [name]England[/name], so maybe the pronouciation would vary? Would love to know anyone’s thoughts!

I also love [name]Rosalie[/name], but I’m my husband doesn’t like the nn [name]Rosie[/name] (not sure why!) and is insisting that it would inevitably be shortened to that, which I don’t think is true. [name]Delphine[/name] is also on the list.

Thanks Berries,
[name]Freya[/name]

I’d say you-la-[name]LEE[/name] if I saw this name. Personally I’m not fond of it, but I don’t think it’s an awful name.
I also really like [name]Rosalie[/name] and I dislike [name]Rosie[/name] like your husband, but that wouldn’t stop me from giving my daughter that name. [name]Rosalie[/name] is such a wonderful feminine name!
I like [name]Delphine[/name], but I like [name]Rosalie[/name] more. What about [name]Eloise[/name]? It’s the same style of the other names… Or [name]Florence[/name]?

thanks aphroditeiris, thats really helpful. The way you’d pronouce it is even nicer to me!

Its also really nice to know that you think [name]Rosalie[/name] is lovely…I think I’ve said it so many times now that I’ve forgotten how lovely it is so was looking for an alternative with [name]Eulalie[/name] (which i still love, but maybe not as much as [name]Rosalie[/name]). I’m not crazy about [name]Rosie[/name] or [name]Rose[/name], its just overused over here in the UK, but [name]Rosa[/name], [name]LeeLee[/name], Rosebud are all sweet and people don’t use nns as much in this country.

[name]Eloise[/name] is already on the list! Its a really sweet name.

I think [name]Eulalie[/name] is such a pretty name. I pronounce it You-la-lee.

Good luck!

I also love the name [name]Eloise[/name] too.

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Eulalie[/name]! I’m a big musical fan, so I’ve loved this name since hearing it in The [name]Music[/name] [name]Man[/name]. I’ve only ever heard it pronounced You-lay-lee. It’s gorgeous!

I’ve always pronounced it “YOU-lah-lee” but others say it “YOU-lay-lee”. Some people emphasize the last syllable “you-lah-[name]LEE[/name]”. I guess it depends on where you live and which pronunciation you prefer. The poet [name]Edgar[/name] [name]Allan[/name] [name]Poe[/name] used this name as well as another rare gem - Ulalume (“YOO-lah-loom” - My fave or “OO-lah-loom”). The name has a historical significance - St. [name]Eulalia[/name] was a 4th century martyr who is the patron saint of [name]Barcelona[/name], Spain. I think it’s very pretty and feminine and would be a rare choice.

I would pronounce it eu-LAH-lee-- I think eu-[name]LAY[/name]-lee is kind of ugly, to be honest. It’s a pretty name, but I much prefer both [name]Rosalie[/name] and [name]Delphine[/name] (beautiful names)! [name]Rosalie[/name] [name]Delphine[/name] would be gorgeous, or maybe [name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Delphine[/name]. [name]Sally[/name] could be another nickname, if you don’t like [name]Rosie[/name].

I thought it was You-Lah-[name]Lee[/name] but then I met someone whose name was [name]Eulalie[/name] and she pronounces it You-[name]Lay[/name]-[name]Lee[/name].
I think You-[name]Lay[/name]-[name]Lee[/name] is pretty although it reminds me a little bit of ukelele!

I know a [name]Rosalie[/name] (I’ve known her for about 10 years and she’s 30 now) who never gets called [name]Rosie[/name]. If she gets called by a nickname it’s usually [name]Ro[/name] or [name]Rose[/name].

It was pronounced you-lay-lee when I was in The [name]Music[/name] [name]Man[/name] and heard it. Very very cute!

I have the same problem with [name]Eulalia[/name]. I’ve seen it written that it should be pronounced as yoo-LAH-lia but that doesn’t sound like a name to me. It barely even sounds like a word, more of a silly sound.
Personally I would pronounce it as yoo-lah-[name]LIA[/name] wit the emphasis at the end. That way is very pretty to me.

For [name]Eulalie[/name] I’d go with yoo-lah-[name]LEE[/name] (rhymes with rosalie) or yoo-la-lee with no specific emphasis.

I love both [name]Eulalie[/name] and [name]Eulalia[/name]. I pronounce them you-[name]LAY[/name]-lee and eu-[name]LAY[/name]-lia. I prefer this pronunciation because Eu-luh-[name]LEE[/name] and Eu-luh-lia sound like two separate names to me, like a hyphenated [name]Eula[/name]-[name]Lee[/name] which sounds much frumpier.

I say you-lah-lee with equal emphasis on the you and the lah with less on the lee. Um hard to explain… bit like this but in english accent with a you sound at the front instead of the oo in the recording: Eulalie pronunciation: How to pronounce Eulalie in English, French, Spanish

When I first saw this name the pronunciation guide said “yoo-LAH-lee” and “yoo-[name]LAY[/name]-lee”. Emphasis on the LAH sounded so strange to me, so I searched for videos of it being pronounced.

Emphasis on the yoo, also a cute song.

Emphasis sounds like it is on the yoo still.

I also found some french videos, and they have the emphasis on the LAH. I think that Americans either say YOO-lah-lee or yoo-[name]LAY[/name]-lee.

Another nickname for [name]Rosalie[/name] could be [name]Posey[/name]. I love the nn [name]Posey[/name] but don’t really love [name]Josephine[/name]. [name]Eulalie[/name] is beautiful too.

I don’t know a whole lot about this name, but upon seeing it I did assume it was Pn’ed: Yoo-[name]Lay[/name]-[name]Lee[/name].
I think the name looks pretty & sounds spunky & fun!
Great pick, [name]IMO[/name]!!

I love this name too! But I’ve always thought of it as YOO-lah-lee which is closest to the French pronunciation from what I understand. Those links were super helpful, dotmyiis!!

I do really love this name, but every time I say it, I come out with a different pronounciation! All of them sound good to me, but it does make me think that anyone with this name would be constantly correcting everyone. :?
